AB - Sunflower breeding is a continuous process designed to increase yield levels and improve resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Breeders have been successful in producing a large number of varieties using conventional breeding methods that vary by species. The emergence of new techniques, such as genomic selection and genome editing, together with efficient phenotyping platforms, have paved the way for more efficient introduction of desirable traits. New approaches in genotyping and phenotyping have enabled more efficient data collection to identify quantitative traits and explain the genetic basis of agronomically important traits. The creation of sunflower genotypes resistant to climate change can contribute to mitigating the negative impact that agricultural production has on the environment, such as intensive water depletion and greenhouse gas emissions, while on the other hand providing resources for stable agricultural production. The paper provides an overview of new approaches and steps in sunflower breeding and the creation of genotypes tolerant to climate changes, with a review of the activities at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops related to their application in the NS breeding program.

AB - Changes in yield components and spike traits are associated with wheat grain yield genetic progress. The aim of this study was to determine variation in yield components, spike and individual grain traits, and their role in winter wheat grain yield genetic improvement under conditions of the Pannonian Plain. Therefore, two-year field trials were conducted in a southern Pannonian location (Novi Sad, Serbia) with ten winter wheat cultivars released between 1931 and 2015. The grain yield had a significant positive linear relationship with the year of cultivar release, showing the improvement rate of 46.4 kg ha−1 yr−1. Grain yield increase has been positively related to the improvement of spike grain weight. Spike grain weight improvement with a rate of 0.25 g yr−1 was followed by simultaneous rise of the individual grain number and grain weight at different positions within a spikelet. Compared to other grains at different positions within a spikelet, G3 grains showed the highest rate of grain weight and the grain number improvement with the year of cultivar release. On the other hand, there was a significant decrease trend of grain protein content in individual grains at different positions. Therefore, wheat breeders should be more focused on grain number and weight improvement of distal grains in order to regain higher grain yield genetic gain under conditions of the Pannonian Plain.

AB - Heat stress represents a significant environmental challenge that adversely impacts the growth, physiology, and productivity of wheat. In order to determine the response to high temperatures of the wheat varieties developed mostly in the Pannonian environmental zone, as well as varietal differences, we subjected seven varieties from Serbia, one from Australia, and one from the UK to thermal stress during anthesis and mid-grain filling and combined stress during both of these periods. The changes in chlorophyll fluorescence and index, leaf temperature, and main agronomic traits of nine winter wheat varieties were investigated under high temperatures. Heat stress negatively affected leaf temperature, chlorophyll fluorescence, and the chlorophyll index during different growth stages. Compared to the control, stress at anthesis, mid-grain filling, and combined stress resulted in yield reductions of 32%, 46%, and 59%, respectively. Single treatment at anthesis had a more severe effect on the number of grains per plant, causing a 38% reduction compared to the control. Moreover, single treatment during mid-grain filling resulted in the greatest decline in grain weight, with a 29% reduction compared to the control. There was a significant varietal variation in heat tolerance, highlighting Avangarda and NS 40s as the most tolerant varieties that should be included in regular breeding programs as valuable sources of heat tolerance. Understanding the genetic and physiological mechanisms of heat tolerance in these promising varieties should be the primary focus of future research and help develop targeted breeding strategies and agronomic practices to mitigate the adverse effects of heat stress on wheat production.

AB - The Rogosija durum wheat landraces, historically the primary cereal in Montenegro until the mid-20th century, faced a significant threat with the introduction of high-yielding common wheat cultivars after World War II, leading to their disappearance from agricultural fields. Efforts to conserve these landraces began in 1955 through the sampling of durum wheat accessions across Montenegrin regions, resulting in the establishment of a Rogosija durum collection in the Montenegro Plant Gene Bank. This collection, holding untapped genetic diversity, presents an opportunity for identifying valuable alleles crucial for enhancing wheat crop adaptability to biotic and abiotic treats. This study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of the Rogosija collection using SNP markers, as well as to explore correlations between genetic clusters and eco-geographic conditions in Montenegro. Utilizing a high-throughput genotyping system based on the 25K Illumina SNP wheat array, 6,915 high-quality SNPs were identified and mapped on the durum genome. Principal components analysis and phylogenetic analysis delineated two distinct genetic durum clusters. Analysis of molecular variance indicated that 16% of the total variation stemmed from differences among these genetic clusters, with the remaining 84% within clusters.

abstract = "The Rogosija durum wheat landraces, historically the primary cereal in Montenegro until the mid-20th century, faced a significant threat with the introduction of high-yielding common wheat cultivars after World War II, leading to their disappearance from agricultural fields. Analysis of molecular variance indicated that 16% of the total variation stemmed from differences among these genetic clusters, with the remaining 84% within clusters.",

AB - To enhance wheat productivity through advancements in crop production technology and breeding methodology, it is necessary to improve our understanding of the physiological processes associated with biomass accumulation, nitrogen uptake and nitrogen use efficiency. Therefore, a field trial with six winter wheat cultivars grown under conditions of four different sowing dates during two growing seasons was conducted to quantify the influence of cultivars and sowing date on variation in nitrogen use efficiency traits, biomass accumulation and nitrogen uptake, and their role in grain yield and nitrogen yield determination. Results showed that delaying sowing from October to November reduced grain yield by 1.49 t ha−1 on average per sowing date, and also caused a reduction of 14.6 and 14.3 kg ha−1 in nitrogen uptake at anthesis and maturity, respectively. Late sowing negatively impacted both grain yield and nitrogen grain yield in winter wheat cultivars, which was attributed to changes in biomass accumulation and nitrogen uptake at anthesis and maturity, as well as a decrease in nitrogen use efficiency and nitrogen uptake efficiency. The decrease in nitrogen use efficiency under late sowing was primarily due to a decrease in nitrogen uptake efficiency, as the increase in nitrogen utilization efficiency could not compensate for the nitrogen uptake efficiency decrease. The study findings suggest that midearly cultivars produced the highest average grain under different sowing conditions, mainly due to greater biomass accumulation during the pre-anthesis period, which provided additional nitrogen storage capacity. Therefore, under conditions of the Pannonian Plain wheat producers should be focused on the medium early cultivars characterized by increased pre-anthesis biomass accumulation.

Tokom sezone, bilo je izuzetno toplih jesenjih i zimskih perioda, umerenih temperatura u prolećnom delu vegetacije i obilnih padavina u fazama formiranja, nalivanja i sazrevanja zrna.

AB - Wheat is one of the most important staple crops in Serbia and plays an important role in food
security and nutrition. Phenolic compounds are dominant antioxidants in whole grains and are
essential quality traits in future breeding programs as they are known for their beneficial
cffects on health. With the aim of analyzing local wheat diversity in terms of phenolic
compounds, 33 local landraces and old locally adapted varieties and 3 modern wheat varieties
were grown in 2021/2022. So, the objective of this work was to optimize the extraction of
phenolic compounds and analyze them by HPLC/DAD method and compare old with modern
cultivars. As it is known that cereal grains contain different phenolic compounds, mainly
phenolic acids in bound form, the extraction of phenolic compounds was done from
wholemeal flour samples after hydrolysis. Alkaline hydrolysis conducted at 25°C for 12 h
using a 2 M NaOH solution in water demonstrated greater efficiency compared to employing
solutions of up to 10 M KOH in methanol under the same temperature and duration. HPLCDAD analysis revealed that ferulic acid presents the major phenolic compound both in old
and modern wheat samples ranging between 14 and 149 mg/kg in old and 51 and 61 mg/kg in
modern varieties. Apart from ferulic acid, vanillic acid (3.1-11.5 mg/kg), syringic acid
(1.4-5.5 mg/kg) and p-coumaric acid (1-6.9 mg/kg) were identified and quantified in old, but
not in new varieties. Our results indicate that the genetic potential of old varieties in terms of
polyphenolic compounds is not fully utilized because the content of ferulic acid in whole
grains in some samples is almost three times higher than in modern varieties that do not differ
significantly among themselves.

AB - Wheat breeding efforts, which have been focused narrowly on crop yield increases, have
caused a reduction in genetic diversity. Namely, old wheat landraces have been unfairly
neglected and reduced to small quantities in gene banks and, at lesser extent, in farm private
collections for a long time. However, the local landraces and the traditional old varieties of
wheat have gained new attention, presumably owing to the increased public awareness of the
need to preserve genetic diversity and the increased consumers’ demand for genuine and
traditional foods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the rheological properties of
wholegrain flour from three different wheat species (7riticum aestivum subsp. aestivum, black
grain bread wheat variety; Triticum turgidum subsp. durum, durum wheat; and Triticum
aestivum subsp. spelta, spelt wheat) and to test their suitability to produce spontaneously
fermented sourdough as an adequate leavening agent in wheat bread production. Spontaneous
fermentation of flours was carried out for 5 days with back-slopping every 24 h (dough yield
of 200) at 25°C. After achieving mature sourdough, the bread was prepared by replacing
refined wheat flour at a 20% level with sourdough samples. Bread with the addition of
sourdough made of modern wheat varicties and bakery yeast-fermented bread were used as
controls. The technological properties of the wholegrain flours estimated by means of
Mixolab indicated rather good protein quality and the ability to form doughs with good
stability in all tested samples. The black grain wheat variety showed significantly longer
dough development times and higher mixing and dough stability, while the GlutoPeak
parameters obtained for this variety were comparable to those of modern wheat. The addition
of sourdough from old wheat landraces resulted in breads of similar specific volume and
texture. Regarding the sensory evaluation, the most prominent differences were obtained for
the textural, odour, and flavour properties. Breads with the addition of old wheat sourdough
stood out from the control samples in terms of yeast and vinegar odour and flavour notes. The
results reported herein showed that the technological performance of old wheat flour,
especially when combined with sourdough processes, could be successfully exploited for the
production of breads comparable to those of modern wheat varieties.

AB - Content of total phenolics and antioxidative potential were determined in 33 local landraces
and old locally adapted varieties grown in Serbia in 2021/2022, among them 3 varieties are
modern. Wholemeal flour was analyzed. Total phenolics were determined according to
spectrophotometric assay. Antioxidative potential was measured as DPPH radical scavenging
activity and the results expressed as ICso values. The lower the ICso value, the more potent is
the extract at scavenging DPPH and this implies a higher antioxidant activity. Total phenolics
in 18 old locally adapted varieties and 12 local landraces were in the range of 351-963 pg
GAE/g of flour, while average value of total phenolics in 3 modern varieties was
390 + 7.3 pg GAE/g of flour and was lower than in majority of all local landraces and
varieties. Only one third of 30 old local varieties and landraces showed lower ICso values
(150-230 mg/mL) than modern varieties (232-280 mg/mL). Average ICso value for 30 tested
wheat samples was 286 = 104 mg/mL. Correlation of -0.616 was obtained for total phenolic
content and scavenging activity expressed as ICso. Yield and thousand kernel weights for old
local varieties and landraces were 5.5-8.1 t/ha and 270-480 g, respectively. Measurements
significant in assessing the yield and quality of a wheat such as thousand kernel weight in
correlation with the antioxidative potential can be an important consideration in selecting and
improving crop varieties, according to the literature data, however this parameter was not
measured in this study.

AB - Diversity is one of the principal components in species adaptation to ever-changing environment. In comparison to natural ecosystems, agriculture imposes additional challenges by constantly increasing the desired yield objectives for cultivated crops. The conservation of biological diversity is thus of essence to secure materials needed in plant breeding to produce crop varieties that are high yielding and adapted to emerging biotic and abiotic stresses. For traits not present in elite material, breeding programs can be designed to include crop wild relatives (CWR), local populations, or old varieties based on their availability for specific crop. This chapter presents case studies of sustainable PGR use in three breeding programs focusing on sunflower CWR, local populations of medicinal plants, and old varieties of small grains. As a genus rich in species that can be crossed with cultivated sunflower, Helianthus has become a model for studies of evolution, but also a popular source of traits for breeding. Disease tolerance traits introduced from the wild species allowed sunflower to still be an economically important crop, while raising interest for wild relatives. Medicinal plants have a long history in Serbian traditional medicine. They have also been investigated on scientific base, so that genetic resources were collected and evaluated for use. The results increased interest for their cultivation, as efforts were made to determine optimal agricultural practices and develop cultivars by breeding. The first Serbian collection of small grain varieties was established to advance existing agricultural production where crops and livestock were integrated in farming systems. With more than a century of organized work on collection, evaluation, and utilization of small grain resources, it is a good example of their sustainable use. The presented collections are a demonstration of returned investment in germplasm conservation and research. As much as the work on PGR may seem long term and with non-tangible return, the benefits are numerous. Increasing availability and knowledge on the germplasm will surely add to the sustainability of both breeding programs and plant genetic resources.

AB - Durum wheat landraces represent a genetic resource for the identification and isolation of new valuable genes and alleles, useful to increase the crop adaptability to climate change. Several durum wheat landraces, all denominated “Rogosija”, were extensively cultivated in the Western Balkan Peninsula until the first half of the 20th century. Within the conservation program of the Montenegro Plant Gene Bank, these landraces were collected, but without being characterized. The main goal of this study was to estimate the genetic diversity of the “Rogosija collection” consisting of 89 durum accessions, using 17 morphological descriptors and the 25K Illumina single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. The genetic structure analysis of the Rogosija collection showed two distinguished clusters localized in two different Montenegro eco-geographic micro-areas, characterized by continental Mediterranean climate and maritime Mediterranean climate. Data suggest that these clusters could be composed of two different Balkan durum landrace collections evolved in two different eco-geographic micro-areas. Moreover, the origin of Balkan durum landraces is discussed.

AB - U proteklih 40 godina, prouzrokovač žute rđe ječma Psh (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. hordei Erikss) registrovan je širom sveta, međutim do najvećih šteta u
prinosa dostizali i 70%.
AB - In the past 40 years, the causal agent of yellow rust in barley, Psh (Puccinia
striiformis f. sp. hordei Erikss), has been registered worldwide. However, it has
caused the greatest damage in areas with cold and humid climates, where yield
losses reached up to 70%. Races of P. striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), the causal
agent of yellow rust in wheat, are usually not found in barley, and those that
infect barley (Psh) are rarely virulent on wheat. However, there are barley genotypes that can be infected by certain Pst races. The causal agent of yellow rust in
triticale (Pst) leads to significant yield losses and quality reduction in triticale. It
is important to note that the Pst races (Warrior and Kranich), which have caused
enormous wheat yield losses in Europe since 2011, have also been registered on
triticale. The aggressive race of triticale (since 2006) and the Warrior and Kranich
races (since 2011) have become prevalent over large areas of Europe within one
or only a few years. Despite the occurrence of yellow rust on wheat in Serbia in
previous years, it has not been registered on barley and triticale. This is the first
report of yellow rust on barley and triticale in Serbia.

AB - Understanding the mechanism of dry matter and nitrogen partitioning and its translocation from different plant parts during post-anthesis period on different sowing dates may contribute to further improvement of winter barley productions in the Pannonian Plain. Therefore, a field trial with six two-rowed winter barley cultivars grown on four different sowing dates in two growing seasons was conducted to determine dry matter and nitrogen partitioning in different plant parts, and further role of their translocation in grain yield and nitrogen yield determination. Higher dry matter and nitrogen accumulation on early sowing dates were followed by higher translocation in developing grain. Contribution of pre-anthesis dry matter translocation to grain yield varied from 34.8 to 48.5% among cultivars and 38.44 to 45.0% among different sowing dates. Furthermore, the pre-anthesis reserved N contributed from 53.2% (NS 557) to 66.2% (NS 551) among cultivars, and from 50.7% (early optimal sowing date) to 66.3% (extreme late sowing date) across sowing dates. In order to achieve and maintain high yielding barley production in the Pannonian Plain, barley growers and breeders should focus more on the medium early barley genotypes, such as NS Pinon, with increased dry matter and nitrogen accumulation during pre-anthesis adapted to early sowing.

AB - The deficiency of micronutrients in the human diet is widely recognised as a global problem. The objective of this study was to assess the content of two essential minerals, iron and zinc, in milling streams of old heritage wheat cultivars that have not been produced for more than a half-century to discover potential parent lines with high mineral content for breeding. Kernel size of seven Serbian old wheat cultivars was evaluated for ash content, thousand-grain weight and share of specific kernel fractions. Three cultivars, Crnozrna, Rumska Crvenka and Stara Banatka, were selected as the most appropriate for milling and further analysis of mineral content in the milling streams. The cultivars were milled in a laboratory mill to obtain six flour and two byproduct streams. At the same time, iron and zinc content was determined on a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer. After mixing all six flour streams obtained from each cultivar, three different flour types were obtained. The flour with the highest ash content was the "1100" type originating from cultivar Stara Banatka, characterized by the highest iron and zinc content (54.9 mg/kg d. b. and 5.407 mg/kg d. b., respectively). It was estimated that consumption of a daily average bread portion (166 g according to national statistical data) made from Stara Banatka flour could provide about 90% of the recommended daily intake for iron. Therefore, Stara Banatka may be a target cultivar for wheat breeders searching for high-iron parent wheat lines.
AB - Nedostatak mikronutrijenata u ljudskoj ishrani predstavlja globalni problem.

AB - Cereals are grasses (a monocot family Poaceae, also known as Gramineae) cultivated widely for their grains used in human and animal consumption. From ancient times, cereals have played an important role in world agriculture and nowadays their significance is illustrated by the overall production of 2.996 million tons being harvested globally in 2020 (FAOSTAT, 2021). The most important staple cereal crops are wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, barley, oats, and millet. However, wheat, rice, and maize together comprise at least 75% of the world’s grain production, with 761, 757, and 1.162 million tons harvested in 2020, respectively. Rice, sorghum, millet, and wheat are widely produced in Asia; corn and sorghum in America; and barley, rye, and oats in Europe. These three continents produce together 80% of the world’s cereal grains. Cereals are a pivotal nutrient source in both developed and developing countries since their grains contain major nutritional and energy sources (proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, amino acids, fibers) as well as micronutrients (vitamins, magnesium, and zinc) (O’Neil et al., 2010; Papanikolaou & Fulgoni, 2017). However, the utilization pattern of these cereal grains differs. In developed countries, more than 70% of total cereal production is fed to the animals, whereas in underdeveloped countries, 68%–98% of the cereal production is used for human consumption.

AB - The increasing pressure of climate change, reduction of genetic diversity on farms and constant decrease in arable land present the most challenging aspects for today's crop production. Reintroduction of diverse adapted local varieties and underutilised landraces of wheat, potentially tolerant to different biotic and abiotic stresses, could ensure stable yield under low-input agriculture. The uncharacterized local varieties and landraces of bread and durum wheat from Serbia and Bulgaria, were collected from small-scale farms and gene banks within a project funded by the Benefit-Sharing Fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, aiming to evaluate their genetic diversity. As a part of this comprehensive project, the selected material was evaluated using different molecular marker techniques. The level of genetic diversity and relatedness of a set of 90 Serbian and Bulgarian local varieties and landraces of bread and durum wheat was assessed using microsatellite molecular markers and 25K wheat Infinium Array. The total of 141 alleles was detected at 20 microsatellite loci with an average number of 7.05 alleles per locus. The PIC value varied from 0.344 to 0.837.

AB - Winter wheat is sensitive to heat stress, which highlights the need for adaptation to hightemperature events to ensure high and stable yields. This study aimed to investigate the
chlorophyll fluorescence response of eight wheat varieties from southeastern Europe to heat
stress. Heat stress was applied during anthesis and mid-grain filling at 35/25 °C and 38/28
°C day/night for seven days, respectively. The results showed no significant differences in
Fv/Fm values between wheat plants grown under control and heat stress during anthesis on the
first, second, fifth, and seventh stress days. This absence of high-temperature effect during
anthesis indicates that temperatures of 35/25 °C for seven days are insufficient to
differentiate wheat variety reactions based on Fv/Fm measurements. However, when
temperatures were increased to 38/28 °C during mid-grain filling, a significant variation in
Fv/Fm values among the studied wheat varieties was observed. NS 40S and NS Ilina showed a
notably slower reduction in Fv/Fm over time under heat stress treatment at mid-grain filling,
exhibiting the highest Fv/Fm values on the seventh day. These varieties can be valuable sources
of heat stress tolerance and should be considered for further breeding activities under the
conditions of southeastern Europe.

Gajenje i čuvanje lokalnih populacija i starih sorti strnih žita pretežno je zabeleženo u udaljenim planinskim predelima južnih i jugozapadnih delova Zlatiborskog okruga.
AB - This study presents the outcomes of a two-year collection mission conducted in Serbia during the period of 2020-2021. The mission aimed to gather genetic resources of small grains and obtain information regarding their conservation, management, and utilization. A total of 12 samples were collected, comprising seven accessions of barley landraces, two of oats, two of rye, and one variety of wheat from four regions in Serbia. The preservation of local traditional cereals was predominantly observed in remote and mountainous areas of the southern and southwestern parts of the Zlatibor district. Most samples were collected from the Pester mountain plateaus, where local farmers still cultivate a few traditional varieties on small plots for personal use. These local varieties are highly esteemed by farmers due to various attributes, such as resistance to lodging and diseases, nutritional value for both human consumption and animal feed. The cultivation of these crops occurs either as sole crops or in crop mixtures, on less fertile soils with minimal inputs, resulting in modest yields. Traditional recipes using local cereals have been preserved. The collected accessions were described and stored for the long term in the Serbian National Gene Bank and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. All collected samples were multiplied for morphological characterization through field trials and distributed to farmers for on-farm evaluations. There have been recent initiatives to establish local community seed banks and encourage seed exchange among farmers. The gathered genetic resources hold significant value for pre-breeding activities and genetic diversity studies.

AB - Plant genetic resources harbor for breeders valuable yet often unexplored traits that have the potential to enhance crop resilience in the face of fluctuating climates. Old local varieties and landraces possess adaptations to local environments, but are typically characterized by late maturity and relatively low yields. Since earliness and high yields are highly valued both by breeders and farmers, this study aimed to screen traditional Serbian landraces and varieties for the high yield potential, early maturing, and better nutrient remobilization efficiency. An experimental trial with the randomized complete block design in three replications was conducted at the Rimski šančevi, Serbia during 2020/21 and 2021/2022. In addition, the correlation between these traits and vegetation index, flag leaf area, and chlorophyll content were tested. Yield, dry matter remobilization efficiency, and dry matter remobilization contribution exhibited positive correlations with normalized difference vegetation index, flag leaf area, and chlorophyll content, while flowering time showed negative correlations with all other traits. Nevertheless, one landrace and three traditional varieties out of 30 evaluated germplasm displayed early flowering, high yield, and medium to high nutrient remobilization traits. Our results suggest that these genotypes represent interesting potential breeding materials warranting further investigation.

Rezultati sugerišu da ovi genotipovi predstavljaju interesantan potencijalni materijal koji bi se mogao uključiti u oplemenjivačke programe uz dodatna istraživanja., Plant genetic resources harbor for breeders valuable yet often unexplored traits that have the potential to enhance crop resilience in the face of fluctuating climates. Our results suggest that these genotypes represent interesting potential breeding materials warranting further investigation.",

AB - Landraces of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum), were the main
cereals of Montenegro until the mid-20th century, where they were
collectively recognized as Rogosija. After the Second World War, the
introduction of high-yielding common wheat cultivars threatened the
survival of Rogosija landraces, that were almost extinct in farmers’
fields. Starting from 1955, sampling of durum wheat accessions in
Montenegrin regions allowed the conservation of a Rogosija durum collection
in the Montenegro Plant Gene Bank. This assortment represents an unexplored
durum wheat germplasm that can be analyzed for the identification of
valuable alleles, useful to increase the wheat crop adaptability to climate
change. Aims of this study were: i) to estimate the genetic diversity andpopulation structure of the Rogosija collection using SNP markers; ii) to
investigate correlation between genetic clusters and the Montenegro ecogeographic conditions. The collection was analyzed with a high-throughput
genotyping system based on the 25K Illumina SNP wheat array. A total of
6,915 high-quality SNPs were retained and mapped on the durum genome.
Principal components and phylogenetic analyses discriminated two different
genetic durum clusters. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that 16% of
the total variation was due to differences among the genetic clusters,
whereas the remaining variance occurred within clusters. To estimate
whether the genetic clusters detected are related to Montenegrin ecogeographic regions, the durum accessions were geo-referenced and evaluated
according to ecological data of the collecting sites. Interestingly, one
genetic cluster included samples located around Lake Skadar, while the
second genetic cluster comprised accession sampled in the Montenegrin
littoral coast. This result suggests that the Rogosija durum collection
stored in the Montenegro Plant Gene Bank enclosed two Rogosija durum
populations, evolved in two different eco-geographic micro-areas.

Visoka tehnologija gajenja poljoprivrednih useva smanjuje negativan uticaj meteoroloških uslova.
AB - Wheat (Triticum spp.) is one of the most adaptable crop species due to its ability to adjust to the variations of the environmental factors. However, high temperatures, precipitation quantity and distribution during plant development and grain filling affect biochemical processes and consequently grain quality. Advanced technology in growing agricultural crops decreases the negative impact of meteorological conditions. On the other hand, increased technological development and intensified agricultural production cause global climate change. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of abiotic factors (minimum, maximum and optimum average temperature and precipitation sum) on the quality of winter wheat grain. Twenty national and international winter wheat cultivars were analyzed in two growing seasons. The trial was carried out on the experimental fields and in laboratories of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops.

AB - Due to the progress in both plant breeding and crop production, over the last few decades wheat grain yield has more than doubled in southeastern Europe, as in the Republic of Serbia. Also, earlier studies have reported the relationship between senescence dynamics and grain yield main components, along with other agronomic wheat traits. Acceleration of plant senescence reduces the duration of grain filling, and may have a negative impact on the final grain weight if the mechanisms to exploit the resources gained during the photosynthetic period are unavailable. Therefore, a stay-green phenotype could be one of the breeding aims, since the longer duration of green leaf area is related to mechanisms and traits that alleviate negative environmental effects during the grain filling. In order to determine the variability of stay-green traits, over several years, various vegetative indexes were continuously monitored in a historical set of wheat cultivars.

AB - Cereal crops have shown a steady and successive increase in grain yield in the southern Pannonian environment, owing to changes in agronomy and grain yield potential. Over the past century in Serbia, grain yield has increased at a rate of 63 kg ha-1 in maize, 46 kg ha-1 in wheat and 46 kg ha-1 in barley. Various studies exploring the agronomical basis of grain yield progress in major cereal crops have indicated that the number of grains per unit area is one of the main traits associated with grain yield improvement. A decrease in plant height (5 cm per decade) has led to a decline in straw yield and an increase in the harvest index, favoring better partitioning of dry matter during pre-anthesis development, ultimately resulting in improved grain yield in wheat and barley. Significant changes have also occurred in the duration of different phenological stages in wheat and barley cultivars under the conditions of the Pannonian plain.

AB - Black oats Avena strigosa Schreb. is grown in the world and in our country in small areas. Thanks to its high nutritional value, high-value proteins, B group vitamins, and nutrients (calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, silicon, iron, manganese, zinc and copper), as well as flavonoids and starch, it is used for human and livestock nutrition, for industrial processing, in the pharmaceutical industry and medicine as a natural medicine. Oats have a beneficial effect on the quality of bones, strengthen immunity, have a beneficial effect on the prostate, insomnia, anxiety, depression, nervousness, hoarseness, lower cholesterol levels and body weight, high blood pressure and blood sugar. Oat tea is especially recommended for patients with multiple sclerosis and in the treatment of diabetes. In this study, the productivity of black oats was examined in two variants: V1-without nutrition (control) and in V2-variant with foliar nutrition, on the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops experimental field, in Bački Petrovac. The results showed that black oats showed high grain yields per plant, in an unfavourable year for production, and that in the variant with top dressing, a statistically significantly higher yield was achieved compared to the control.
