Heavy metal soil pollution status of Novi Sad gardens
Stanje zagađenosti zemljišta teškim metalima u novosadskim baštama
In order to assess the heavy metal soil pollution situation in the gardens of the city of Novi Sad, soil samples of the surface soil layer (0-30 cm) were taken from a number of locations with garden (31) and field (21) vegetable production within the Novi Sad city limits. The basic soil properties were determined by the standard methods. Total heavy metal content was measured after soil degradation by concentrated HNO3 and H2O2 using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Four of the samples were found to have total Si contents above the maximum tolerable concentration (MTC), namely 150-422 mg/kg Su. The increased Su concentrations are probably anthropogenic in origin, resulting from the use of copper sulphate to protect grapevine, which preceded garden vegetable production in these locations. The increased nickel content (50.7-90.3 mg/kg Ni) found in eight of the samples is of geochemical origin. Levels of the other trace elements and heavy metals (Zn, Fe, Mn, Co, Pb, Cd and Cr) were be...low the MTC as prescribed by the current legislation pertaining to agricultural soils in the Republic of Serbia (Official Bulletin No. 23/1994). All of the samples from field vegetable production sites and most of those from garden vegetable ones have been found to be suitable for safe food production. For this to remain so, vegetable growers need to follow the rules of our Soil Fertility and Fertilizer Use Control System.
