AB - The sustainable production of agricultural commodities, such as vegetable proteins and oils, is currently facing the challenge of developing new cropping strategies more e fficient in terms of water, nutrients, and land, while being able to increase the supply of domestic feedstocks. Double cropping of camelina (Camelina sativa L.), sown in the autumn, with sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) can be proposed as a sustainable way to produce in the same growing season and land, multiple feedstocks for both energy, feed and food uses. A preliminary trial was conducted in Novi Sad (Serbia) during the 2018/19 growing season to test: yield performance, oil content and 1000 seed mass of two early sunflower hybrids (NS Dukat and NS H 7749) sown just after the harvest of two camelina varieties (NS Slatka and NS Zlatka which average yield was 920 kg/ha). Sunflower hybrids were also grown in the monocropping system as control. Both sunflower hybrids had higher seed yields in the monocropping system (+24%), but when considering the total yield of the two crops in the double cropping seed yield resulted slightly higher (+1-3%) than that of sunflower in the monocropping system. Although the average oil content and oil yield of sunflower was 6% and 27% higher in the monocropping system, respectively, the high nutritional value of camelina’s oil, which is rich in omega-3, should be also carefully evaluated.

AB - Background: The effectiveness of soybean inoculants in field conditions may be improved through the joint application of rhizobia and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB). Plant nutrients may also contribute to the higher efficacy of microbial inoculants as well as the growth and development of plants. Methods: A field experiment was performed to evaluate the responses of the rhizomicrobiome and soybean to seed treatments with multiple bacterial strains (Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus megaterium and Azotobacter chroococcum), applied individually or in consortia, with and without nutrient complex (S, Mg, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, B and Mo).

AB - Tomatoes encounter many pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which reduce the yield and
quality of plants and lead to large losses in production. The application of plant protection products
(PPPs) is still an important and most effective measure to control plant diseases. However, the use of chemicals in agriculture contributes to environmental pollution and biodiversity loss, and it can also threaten non-target living organisms. Biological control is a widely accessible, environmentally safe, and cost-efficient alternative for the prevention and suppression of plant diseases. Bacillus species with antimicrobial and plant growth-promoting effects are most frequently used as biocontrol agents to increase the resilience of agricultural production against biotic stresses. The present review discusses the antagonistic mechanisms and the biocontrol potential of Bacillus spp. against tomato diseases caused by different pathogens. The main mechanisms of Bacillus spp. include the production of antimicrobial compounds (antibiotics, extracellular enzymes, siderophores, and volatile compounds), competition for nutrients and space, and induced systemic resistance (ISR). Although Bacillus-based PPPs have been developed and commercialised worldwide for various crops and pathogens, the efficiency issues are still subject to debate. Additionally, a combined strategy for controlling tomato diseases based on Bacillus spp. and other available methods (conventional or natural-based) is a promising research field.

AB - Biostimulants are used for seed quality and performance improvement. However, the impact of biostimulants on parsnip seed quality has not been examined. Slow germination of parsnip is often further impeded by stress conditions. This study therefore aimed to assess whether treatments with different biostimulants could enhance seed germination and the initial seedling growth of parsnip. Amino acid and micronutrient-based biostimulants (0.2% solutions (v/v) of Technokel Amino Mix® and Megafol®) improved germination of parsnip seeds under optimal conditions, while biostimulant treatments with humic acid, fulvic acid and micronutrients (0.02% solution (v/v) of Organiko®) enhanced the initial growth. Our findings validate the potential of biostimulant application as a seed treatment. Determination of the main physiological causes of parsnip germination enhancement is needed in further research.

AB - The most common mechanical damage to soybean in the agroecological conditions of Serbia occurs after the appearance of hail, floods or due to damage from wild animals and insects. In recent years, extreme temperatures accompanied by drought have been increasingly recorded during the summer months, as well as the appearance of hail, which has become frequent during the growing season of spring crops. The aim of this work was to determine the consequences and the extent of yield reduction if hail occurs in the generative stages of soybean development. The occurrence of hail in the R1 (beginning bloom) and R3 (beginning pod) stages of development in the form of plant damage was simulated. This paper will present the results of how three soybean varieties reacted after simulated hail damage in two stages of generative development and what the effects were on yield, height, number of fertile nodes, as well as percentage of plant regeneration. The trial was set up in 2020 as a two-factorial experiment in three replications. Three soybean varieties were sown in late April. In order to simulate hail damage, the plants were cut to a height of 15 cm to ensure at least two nodes and enable the regeneration of the plants. The stage of development of soybean, i.e. the moment of hail damage, had a direct impact on the yield, the number of regenerated plants, as well as the number of fertile nodes.

AB - One of the goals of the ECOBREED work package SOYBEAN was to develop soybean genotypes with improved agronomic performance and to offer know-how for cultivation practices tailor-made for low input and organic systems. During the project lifetime, the focus of activities was on henotyping for biotic (weed, pest, diseases) and abiotic (drought and chilling stress) stress tolerance screening, as well as crop and nutritive quality and N fixation efficiency. A marker-assisted selection programme was established to identify genes/QTL of particular importance for organic soybean varieties. In addition, an assessment of the effects of cover crops and inoculation in the process of soybean seed multiplication was performed. Creating and selecting new soybean lines suitable for organic production was a key priority. After the first half of the project and the conduction of different trials and identification of useful traits, cross composite populations (CCPs) and soybean lines were available for further field testing. Chosen soybean lines went through the registration trials (2021-2022) to evaluate their performance and adaptability. The first ECOBREED soybean variety was registered by IFVCNS. NS ECOB is the variety with high protein content (00 maturity group) specifically selected for organic and low input production requirements.

AB - Seed infection caused by Fusarium spp. is one of the major threats to the seed quality and
yield of agricultural crops, including garden peas. The use of Bacillus spp. with multiple antagonistic
and plant growth-promoting (PGP) abilities represents a potential disease control strategy. This
study was performed to evaluate the biocontrol potential of new Bacillus spp. rhizosphere isolates
against two Fusarium strains affecting garden peas. Six Bacillus isolates identified by 16S rDNA sequencing as B. velezensis (B42), B. subtilis (B43), B. mojavensis (B44, B46), B. amyloliquefaciens (B50),
and B. halotolerans (B66) showed the highest in vitro inhibition of F. proliferatum PS1 and F. equiseti
PS18 growth (over 40%). The selected Bacillus isolates possessed biosynthetic genes for endoglucanase (B42, B43, B50), surfactin (B43, B44, B46), fengycin (B44, B46), bacillomycin D (B42, B50), and
iturin (B42), and were able to produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), siderophores, and cellulase. Two
isolates, B. subtilis B43 and B. amyloliquefaciens B50, had the highest effect on final germination, shoot
length, root length, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, and seedling vigor index of garden peas as
compared to the control. Their individual or combined application reduced seed infection and increased seed germination in the presence of F. proliferatum PS1 and F. equiseti PS18, both after seed
inoculation and seed bio-priming. The most promising results were obtained in the cases of the
bacterial consortium, seed bio-priming, and the more pathogenic strain PS18. The novel Bacillus
isolates may be potential biocontrol agents intended for the management of Fusarium seed-borne
diseases.

AB - Botrytis cinerea is one of the most destructive fungal pathogens affecting over 200 plant hosts, including important crop species such as tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). This fungus causes gray mold of tomato, affecting the yield in the open field, greenhouses, but also during the transportation and storage of the product. B. cinereais difficult to control because it can survive as mycelia, conidia or sclerotia for long periods, while numeroushosts serve as the source of inoculum. Control of tomato gray mold involves crop rotation, sanitation and improved growing conditions, but still largely relies on repeated application of fungicides. Excessive use of fungicides has led to development of B. cinerea resistance to various groups of fungicide. Resistance to carbendazim and procymidone in B. cinereaisolates originating from tomato has been confirmed in Argentina, while resistance to difenoconazole has been reported in China and resistance to carbendazim and cyprodinil was foung in Greece. Therefore, it is classified as high risk pathogenfor the development of resistance by Fungicides Resistance Action Committee (FRAC). Occurrence of resistance coupled with public concern on fungicide residues in vegetables created anurgent need to find an alternative method to control B. cinerea. One approach is the utilization of bacteria from the genus Bacillus. Bacillus spp. represent a heterogeneous group of bacteria, which are dominant in the soil and the rhizosphere of plants. They belong to Gram-positive bacteria with rod-shaped cells and ability to produce endospores in unfavorable conditions for growth. Bacillus species have numerous positive effect on plants, such as ability to increase the availability of nutrients in the soil, stimulate plant growth and control plant pathogens. These bacteria protect plants from pathogens by producing antimicrobial compounds (AMCs), competing for niches and nutrients, and inducing systemic resistance. In our experiment, two-month-old tomato plants (BBCH 59, variety Novosadski jabučar), were treated foliarly once a week for three consecutive weeks with either 30 or 55 ml of bacterial suspension of B. amyloliquefaciens isolate Bac 28.3. One day after the last treatment, all plants were spray-inoculated with conidial suspension (105 conidia ml-1 ) of B. cinerea isolate 463-19. Systemic fungicide Switch 62.5 WG (Syngenta) was used at recomended concentration (0.23%) as positive control, and sterile distilled water (SDV) as negative control. Appearance of symptoms on treated plants was monitored daily, and Disease severity (DS in %) was assessed 7, 10 and 14 days after inoculation. With the 30 ml-dose, the highest efficiency in suppressing B. cinerea on tomato plants was obtained with isolate Bac 28.3 (DS=63.88%), compared to SDV (DS=86.1%) and the fungicide Switch 62.5 WG (DS=69.44%). Similar results were obtained with a dose of 55 ml: DS of 59.72% when treated with isolate Bac 28.3, which was statistically significant compared to 86.10% (water), but not statistically significant compared to 69.44% (Switch). Subsequent PCR analysis of Bac 28.3 isolate revealed presence of genes for two cyclic lipopeptides: bacillomycin D and iturin A, indicating the intrinsic trait underlying the inhibitory effect on B. cinerea.

AB - Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most important grain legumes for
human consumption worldwide. It has been recognised that plant genotype affects the soil
microbiome composition, which in turn, influences vital plant functions. The aim of the study
was to examine rhizosphere microbial properties under three common bean varieties (Belko,
Maksa, and Sremac). An abundance of the tested microbial groups was determined through
the method of agar plates, by plating of soil suspension on selective nutritive media.
Dehydrogenase activity was measured spectrophotometrically. Soil microbial properties were
determined in rhizosphere soil samples before sowing, in the flowering stage, and in the
maturity stage. Common bean genotypes was also characterize for morphological traits —
plant growth (shoot and root length, nodule number, and dry matter mass of shoot, root, and
nodule), and yield traits (number of pods per plant, seed weight, and seed mass). Abundance
of microbial communities and dehydrogenase activity differed throughout the plant life cycle.
The results indicated that abundance of Azotobacter spp., free N2-fixers, ammonifiers, and
actinomycetes, as well as dehydrogenase activity significantly differed in rhizosphere of bean
varieties. However, the influence of common bean genotype for the total number of bacteria,
and fungi was not observed. Significant differences among bean genotypes were observed in
shoot length, nodule number, and dry matter mass of shoot, and nodule, while root properties
did not differ between varieties. A significantly higher number of seed per plant was
observed in Belko variety. The results confirm that the plant variety can significantly alter the
microbiome community composition and activity. Characterizing differences in rhizosphere
microbial properties and the plant morphological and yield traits associated with these
changes will provide essential information about complex, dynamic and continuous plant–
microbe interactions.

AB - Soil microorganisms play a significant role in agroecosystems via decomposition
and nutrient cycling and may serve as indicators of potential soil fertility and land-use
change. Cultivation practices lead to disturbance of soil properties, which is manifested
by a reduced number and enzymatic activity of microorganisms, especially because
modern agricultural production involves the use of large amounts of pesticides and
fertilizers, the non-application of organic fertilizers, and the burning of crop residues.
The aim of this study was to determine the abundance of certain microbial groups and
dehydrogenase activity in arable lands of Vojvodina Province according to the humus
gradient, which is one of the most important characteristics of soil fertility.
Microbiological properties and humus content have been determined in 1115
representative soil samples collected from the surface horizon (0 –30 cm). The highest
total number of bacteria, oligotrophs, copiotrophs, and fungi, as well as dehydrogenase
activity, were recorded in soil samples with a high content of humus (5–10%). Similarly,
the azotobacters and actinomycetes were the most abundant in medium-humus soil
samples (3–5%), whereas the lowest microbial number and activity were detected in
soil samples with very low humus content (˂1%). The results indicate the necessity of
applying good agricultural practices that will enable intensive microbiological activity
and the synthesis of new amounts of humus, primarily through the introduction of
organic matter into the soil as well as the use of microbial-based preparations.

AB - Plant species might face detrimental consequences from acidity stress during
germination and early plant growth. Successful crop production depends on seed
germination, and a plant's ability to withstand different pH levels is determined by its
tolerance mechanisms. Unfavorable substrate pH during seed germination can cause
adverse effects like changes in membrane permeability, reduced degradation rate of
stored substances, lower enzyme activity, altered membrane potential energy, inhibited
proteolytic activity and altered seed storage metabolism. Numerous studies have
worked on the effect of acidity stress on seed germination of different crops. However,
currently, there is no research available regarding how industrial hemp responds to
acidity. This study aimed to determine how different levels of acidity affect the
germination and initial plant growth of industrial hemp. Four different pH values (4.0,
5.0, 6.0, and 7.0) were used to test the impact of acidity on the seeds of two different lots
of industrial hemp cultivar Helena, developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable
Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia. The hydrogen ion concentration range was regulated by
adding H2SO4 or NaOH. The germination test was performed to assess the hemp seed
germination and plant growth. The results demonstrated that the pH level determines
how acidity affects hemp seed germination and initial plant growth. Compared to other
acid treatments, the germination capacity of hemp seed at pH 4 was not adversely
affected, although shoot length and fresh and dry seedling biomass were marginally
decreased. Additionally, our findings showed that hemp seedlings could withstand
changes in acid concentration within the applied range and exhibited a modest degree
of lipid peroxidation. The hemp seedlings of both seed lots were not stressed, according
to the findings of biochemical analyses such as total phenolics and antioxidant capacity.
To confirm the research's conclusions, a field experiment should be conducted.

AB - Suncokret je sve više ižložen negativnim uticajima klimatskih promena, posebno visokim
temperaturama i sušnim periodima, što neretko uzrokuje značajne varijacije i smanjenje prinosa
semena.
sprovodi svake godine multilokacijske mikro i proizvodne ogleda širom zemlje, testirajući
adaptabilnost i stabilnost novih i već raširenih hibrida suncokreta u različitim mikroklimatskim
uslovima. Tokom 2023. godine hibridi nove generacije, odnosno dva konvencionalna hibrida (NS
Kruna i NS Ronin) i dva Express (SUMO) hibrida (NS H 8002 i NS H 8005) posejani su u osam
regiona tj. okruga, kod četiri poljoprivredna proizvođača a u svakom okrugu.
hibridi u proseku ostvarili veće prinose u svim okruzima. Ovi rezultati potvrđuju da novosadski
hibridi nove generacije poseduju izuzetnu adaptabilnost, stabilnost, a pored toga i visok
potencijal za prinos u različitim agroekološkim uslovima širom Republike Srbije.

AB - Although flower pollinator interactions are known to be mediated by floral traits, not enough attention has been paid to the research of secretory tissues and volatile components of sunflower disc florets as potentially important parameters in breeding programs. (1) To our knowledge, this is the first integrated study aimed at better understanding the attractiveness of sunflower capitula to insects. In the study, we have made a very detailed comparative analysis of secretory tissues and the characterization of the volatile components (VOCs) of disc florets in 10 wild perennial Helianthus species. (2) For anatomical analyses, cross-sections were obtained from the nectary zone of disc florets using a cryotechnique procedure. Micromorphological observation and morphological and anatomical analysis of disc florets were performed using light and scanning electron microscopy. For VOCs, we applied headspace, GC-FID, and GC/MS analyses. (3) The obtained results indicate that there is a difference between the analyzed traits among studied species. H. eggertii, H. hirsutus, H. mollis, H. resinosus, and H. tuberosus had high disc diameter values, a high cross-section area and disc floret corolla length, as well as the largest cross-section area and thickness of the disc florets nectary. In the analyzed VOCs, 30 different compounds were detected. The highest yield and quantity of α-Pinene was observed in H. mollis. (4) Inflorescence features, such as receptacle diameter, corolla and secretory tissue properties, and floret VOCs production and characterization, provided valuable information that can be used as guidelines in sunflower breeding programs to maximize pollinator attractiveness and increase seed yield.

AB - For agricultural production is used almost 40% of the global land from where it dominates conventional agriculture which uses large amounts of inputs in the form of fertilizers and pesticides leading to the contamination of soil, water resources, air pollution and land erosion, affects biodiversity and extinction of many plants and animals. On the other hand, the world's population is constantly growing and currently numbers more than 8 billion people and it is estimated that food production will have to double by 2050. In order to meet the future needs of the population for food raw materials, food production must significantly increase, and at the same time, the impact of agriculture on the environment and natural resources must be drastically reduced. Sustainable agriculture is emerging as one of the solutions. This way of agricultural practice refers to the management and preservation of natural resources through organizational and technological changes in modern agricultural production in order to satisfy human needs and preserve the environment. One of the most important natural resources on which the entire agricultural production relies is land. In intensively cultivated lands, there is a noticeable trend of intense degradation, which represents a major problem facing humanity. The paper reviews the decrease in soil fertility based on the samples collected during the five-year monitoring, as well as a proposal for measures to increase fertility and future preservation of this environmental resource.

AB - Knowledge of long-term phosphorus behavior is essential to improve soil structure, nutrient supply potential, and the sustainability of cropping systems. A 45-year long-term experimental trial was used to observe organic phosphorus fractionation and its effects on soil aggregation and nutrient distribution at three depths (0–20, 20–40, and 40–60 cm) in Vojvodina Province, Serbia, under maize monoculture and maize/barley rotation. Five fertilizing systems were studied, including Control, NPK, NPK + maize remains, NPK + manure, and NPK + manure in rotation. Soil aggregates were fractionated into four size categories (>2000, 2000–250, 250–53, and <53 µm) using a wet sieving method. The samples were analyzed for main indicators, including different forms of phosphorus, total and available (PT and PA), as well as its organic forms (Labile Po, Biomass Po, Mod. Labile Po, Fulvic acid Po, Humic acid Po, and Resistant Po), and other fertility parameters. Significant differences in total and available phosphorus as well as all observed organic phosphorus fractions were evident between treatments with and without organic amendments, particularly in the 0–20 and 20–40 cm soil layers. Moderately labile P forms were dominant across all treatments, while labile forms constituted a smaller proportion. The most notable differences between treatments were observed in the labile and moderately labile forms, as well as in the resistant form of organic phosphorus. Manure application led to increased nutrient content in macroaggregates (>250 µm) compared to microaggregates. Microaggregates (<250 µm) were predominant across all depths, while stable structural aggregates did not show a significant increase after manure application. PCA highlighted significant correlations between soil characteristics, including total and available P, total organic carbon, clay content, and enzyme activity, across different aggregate sizes and organic P fractions. Overall, long-term mineral fertilization combined with organic amendment application induced variations in phosphorus fractions and the content of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus associated with aggregates in the first two soil layers, except for aggregate size classes.

AB - Wheat is the most important plant used for human consumption in Europe and represents the crop most widely grown in the organic agriculture. Moreover, wheat also represents the largest range of organic products available on the market. Because of its importance, for the improvement of organic wheat production great efforts and resources are invested. The main goal is to obtain high and stable yields. During the breeding process of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), when creating a new variety for organic use, it is necessary to incorporate genes responsible for high yield potential and adaptability to different production conditions. In order to determine the variability of grain yield, hectolitre weight, 1000 grain weight and plant height, collection of 30 winter wheat cultivars widely grown in the Pannonian Plain was chosen. The experiment was carried out in a typical Pannonian location at the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia. The results showed significant variations in the examined traits between the chosen cultivars. Knowledge about the variability between the wheat cultivars could be used for selecting the most suitable ones for breeding in the organic agriculture of the Pannonian Plain.

The experiment was carried out in a typical Pannonian location at the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia. The results showed significant variations in the examined traits between the chosen cultivars. Knowledge about the variability between the wheat cultivars could be used for selecting the most suitable ones for breeding in the organic agriculture of the Pannonian Plain.",

AB - In the previous decade, new technologies based on remote sensing and photogrammetry were established as a powerful tool for non-destructive estimation of different plant traits. The high-throughput phenotyping (HTPP) implies the utilization of these tools and techniques, resulting in a fast and accurate assessment of crop development data. In soybean breeding, traditional phenotyping is recognized as a bottleneck in the current selection of superior lines mainly because of the inefficiency and resource consumption. The HTPP could be applied to overcome these shortcomings and not just for the prediction of plant characteristics from a single time point but also for perceiving crop growth based on multi-temporal data. This study aimed to analyze soybean growing patterns in different environments (drought and control) based on the estimated height and biomass of 206 genotypes (early and late varieties) sown in 2020 and 2021. In both seasons, each trait was predicted in eight-time points with previously developed HTPP models and protocols. The estimated values were used to create growing curves and evaluate analyzed genotypes based on their performance. Early varieties were dominant for both traits in drought conditions. In the control, the late material performed better regarding height while early genotypes accumulated more biomass.

AB - The aim of the experiment was to assess the competitive abilities of three soybean genotypes and selected invasive weeds based on soybean grain yield (t ha1). Field trials with competition between three soybean varieties (NS Apolo, Fortuna, NS Zmaj) and three invasive weeds (Abutilon theophrasti, Ambrosia artemisiifolia and Xanthium strumarium) were conducted at Novi Sad (2020-2022). The split split plot design with four replications were used and plot size was 30 m2. Weeds were sown at the same time with densities of 0.5, 1, 5 and 10 weeds per m-1 of soybean row. The three central rows of the plot were used to calculate the soybean grain yield. X. strumarium caused the highest yield losses. Although 2020 was favorable for soybean growth, mean values of grain yield of soybean showed that in some treatments the Fortuna variety was showing higher grain yield compared to NS Apolo and NS Zmaj. Due to the deficit of precipitation in 2021, in the periods when it is necessary for the formation of grain yield and the contribution of other factors, genotypes NS Apolo and NS Zmaj showed higher grain yield than Fortuna. In 2022, which was extremely dry (without enough rainfall during the season), there were no significant differences between genotypes.

Tokom sezone, bilo je izuzetno toplih jesenjih i zimskih perioda, umerenih temperatura u prolećnom delu vegetacije i obilnih padavina u fazama formiranja, nalivanja i sazrevanja zrna.

AB - Marker-assisted selection (MAS) is a valuable tool in crop breeding, including organic breeding. The application of molecular markers allows rapid screening at early developmental stages as well as more accurate and efficient identification and selection of plants with desired traits. Besides accelerating breeding, this approach reduces the need for extensive field trials and multiple generations of selection. Considering that organic breeding emphasizes sustainable practices and minimal environmental impact, MAS can reduce the need for excessive land, water, and resources typically required for conventional breeding. In addition, it can help breeders to develop organic-compliant varieties by targeting specific traits and preserving organic standards, providing more efficient and sustainable strategies for organic production systems. Molecular markers were used to screen ECOBREED soybean germplasm harbouring traits relevant to organic farming, such as cadmium accumulation, supernodulation and disease tolerance to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Diaporthe complex. Genotypes with low cadmium accumulation should be used in organic food production to improve food safety, while supernodulation in soybean could be an important trait showing potential for increased nitrogen fixation. Molecular screening of genotypes for disease resistance is especially important in organic farming where chemical interventions are limited, offering an efficient and sustainable strategy for organic production.
