AB - Factors influencing Fusarium head blight (FHB) occurrence and yield losses
in winter wheat have extensively been studied through the years; however, reports on the
relationship between FHB traits and yield are conflicting. In addition, studies neglected the
relationship between FHB traits and thousand-kernel weight (TKW). This study evaluated the
variability in the relationship between FHB traits, TKW, and yield under field conditions, using
40 commercial winter wheat cultivars differing in resistance/susceptibility to FHB. In general,
the FHB index had greater relation to yield, while Fusarium-damaged kernels (FDK) was more
related to TKW. The relationship between yield, TKW, FHB index, and FDK was also determined
by resistance/susceptibility of winter wheat cultivars. Fusarium-damaged kernels influenced yield
more in moderately resistant (R2 = 43 %) than in susceptible/moderately susceptible cultivars (R2
= 27 %). The influence of the FHB index on TKW was weak (R2 = 9 %) in susceptible/moderately
susceptible cultivars and in moderately resistant ones (R2 = 1 %). The potential to predict TKW
from yield under pathogen pressure was limited due to the moderate-to-positive correlation
between yield and TKW (r = 0.349, p < 0.001). This study provides insights into factors that
influence TKW under FHB pathogen pressure and gives direction to more efficient and reliable
investigations on grain resistance toward FHB.

AB - To date, studies have usually focused on the impact of abiotic factors on the distribution of plant pathogens and have built forecast models for the prediction of pathogen outbreaks. However, the impact of the combined effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the prevalence of economically important pathogens has usually been neglected. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between powdery mildew and rusts of wheat and to examine how the combined effects of abiotic and biotic factors influence their prevalence. The study was conducted in the period 2016-2019 using the collection of 2158 genotypes of winter wheat. The most influential factors on disease indices and relationships among obligate pathogens were determined using multiple regression models and principal component analysis. The possibility of the coexistence of different rust species in the same growing season and in the same field was shown. The significant influence of fluctuations in winter temperatures on changes in the prevalence of obligate pathogens was determined. The strong impact of genotypes and their reaction on climatic elements in certain phenological stages were shown to be significant factors influencing the interactions among obligate pathogens and the predominance of one pathogen over another.

AB - Whole kernels of cereals are the most important source of magnesium. This mineral has several positive effects on human health. However, the human body cannot absorb 100% of magnesium from plant sources during digestion. Additionally, the wheat flour milling process usually produces refined flour with a substantially lower content of magnesium. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of milling of two wheat cultivars on total and soluble magnesium distribution in milling fractions, with the purpose of creating wheat bread with a precisely defined magnesium content. Ash content, thousand grain weight (TGW), and kernel size were analysed in five wheat cultivars. Two most statistically distinguished wheat cultivars according to these analyses (Moma and Todorka) were milled in a laboratory mill to gain as many flour frac-tions as possible (eleven). Magnesium was extracted from the flour and its content was measured by inductively coupled plasma. The results showed that the level of soluble magnesium in refined white flours (T-500 with ash content between 0.46-0.60d. m.%) is approximately 17% and is available for uptake in the human body. Also, by milling the Moma cultivar in an industrial mill with a capacity of 100 t per day gave 6.6 t more brown flour (T-1000 with ash content between 1.05-1.15 d.m.%) than the Todorka cultivar. Furthermore, the daily consumption of brown bread (produced from brown flour) in Serbia would satisfy about 60% of the daily magnesium requirements.

AB - Plant genetic resources are a link between agriculture, environment and trade, so their conservation requires cooperation from different sectors. The existing diversity in genetic resources is the foundation in breeding for new challenges or new markets in the future. The number of crop genetic resources in Serbia is obscure because there is no national inventory. It is thought that there are about 15,000 seed accessions and 3500 accessions of fruit trees and grape in collections of different national institutes and stakeholders. In the National Plant Gene Bank, there are more than 4000 accessions of nearly 250 plant species. Crops kept in ex situ collections are used in breeding programs and interspecific crosses, for selection and introduction of desired traits through pre-breeding programs. Serbia as a state participates in all national and international efforts for preservation, management and use of plant genetic resources. Additionally, Serbia has also established a set of national regulations related to plant genetic resources and their use in breeding. Since Serbia is one of Europe's most important crop producers, especially in maize (11% of EU-27 production), soya (35%), sunflowers (6%) and sugar beet (2.5%), this paper discusses certain issues and achievements in the use of plant genetic resources in cereal and oil crops improvement in Serbia, as well as national and international regulations affecting their exploitation.

AB - Nitrogen management in winter wheat is one of the most studied agricultural practices. Optimization of nitrogen nutrition and sowing density requirements of specific winter wheat cultivar are major objectives for improvement of trade-offs between grain yield, environmental sustainability and maximum profitable production. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of interaction between nitrogen fertilization and sowing density on grain yield and yield determinants of modern wheat cultivars. The trial consisted of five winter wheat cultivars, four top-dressing nitrogen doses and four sowing densities was carried out under rain-fed conditions at the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia. The analysis of variance showed statistically significant effects of all three factors on studied traits, while significance of interactions between studied treatments varied among traits.

AB - Knowledge about genetic structure and allelic diversity of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) collections is a key to developing modem wheat cultivars, able to cope with various abiotic and biotic stress factors, through purposeful selection of parents. Further, information about population structure of a material is the first prerequisite of association mapping, which prevents declaring of spurious marker-trait associations. The aim of this study was to assess genetic diversity and presence of population structure within the panel of wheat accessions chosen for association mapping of yield and yield related traits in wheat. The material consisting of 282 wheat accessions, highly variable for 10 agronomically important traits, was evaluated using microsatellite markers that were distributed all over three wheat genomes. The 397 alleles were detected at 31 SSR markers, with an average number of 12.4. The highest diversity was detected at microsatellite loci from B genome, while the lowest number of alleles was observed for D genome. Structure analysis indicated the existence of three subpopulations, where genotypes were grouped according to their origin as well as pedigree data. In each subpopulation, private alleles were detected, indicating informativeness of analysed microsatellite loci for the elucidation of population structure. Statistically significant differences among groups were observed for 8 out of 10 wheat agronomically important traits, while PCA did not show a clear separation of genotypes. The analysed wheat accessions demonstrated a sufficiently high level of genetic diversity, considering both molecular and phenotypic data, which makes them suitable for the association study of breeding traits in wheat.

abstract = "Knowledge about genetic structure and allelic diversity of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) collections is a key to developing modem wheat cultivars, able to cope with various abiotic and biotic stress factors, through purposeful selection of parents. The analysed wheat accessions demonstrated a sufficiently high level of genetic diversity, considering both molecular and phenotypic data, which makes them suitable for the association study of breeding traits in wheat.",

AB - Constant increase in human population causes an increased demand for wheat, which production should rise at a rate of 1.6% annually until 2050. To achieve this goal, scientists and plant breeders must have access to all possible breeding tools. The most recent is precision breeding with CRISPR/Cas9 system, which allows creation of desired crop varieties in a fast, simple and much mote direct way compared to previous breeding techniques. Many agriculturally important traits of wheat have been targeted by genome editing, resulting in resistance to powdery mildew and Fusarium graminearum, i~aproved drought tolerance, water use efficiency and herbicide tolerance, enhanced gtain size and yield, as well as reduced amount of alfa-gliadins and immunoreactivity for consumers with coeliac disease. Also, mutant wheat plants which abort pollen development were produced using this technology, resulting in male sterility. Production of male-sterile and doubled haploid plants can facilitate development of hybrid seed production in wheat. However, all these promising results obtained by advanced methods will have only scientific significance if their wide application in wheat breeding is not allowed. In the European Union plants obtained by precision breeding techniques like CRISPR are considered as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) which are not exempt from the GMO legislation. Even crops with the smallest CRISPR-mediated alteration, which can also arise spontaneously in nature, are subjected to these provisions. Some part of the scientific community thinks that there are no scientific reasons to consider genome-edited crops differently than conventionally bred varieties. They stated that plants obtained by simple and targeted genome editing and which do not contain foreign genes are at least as safe as varieties derived from conventional breeding techniques. Recently, many European research institutions have taken the initiative to change the EU legislation by signing an open statement which says that gene editing with CRISPR should be used as a faster and mote efficient way of producing food sustainably. If this initiative is accepted, it will allow new methods to be applied more widely in breeding and their results can be translated to the field through the precise introgression of desired traits into conventional wheat varieties.

AB - Recent advances in agriculture phenotyping gave rise to a plethora of speedy and non-destructive screening tools, one of which is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) technology, widely used for estimation of yield components, biomass and other important physiological traits for crop production. The objective of this study was to evaluate NDVI values and relationship with agronomic characteristics in a diverse set of barley advanced lines. The selected plant material consisted of 24 six-rowed and 23 two-rowed elite barley lines developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad. The trial was conducted in a complete randomized block design with four replications at the experimental field Rimski šančevi in 2017/18. The NDVI parameters were collected using the handheld Green Seeker sensor at the anthesis vegetation stage (Zadoks 65), while the following agronomic traits were measured during the growing season: stem height, spike length, hectoliter mass, thousand grain weight and grain yield. Significant correlations between NDVI and grain yield were detected in two-rowed (R2=0.363) and six-rowed (R2=0.268) barley genotypes. The observed positive correlations with stem height were stronger in two-rowed (R2=0.459) than in six-rowed (R2=0.257) genotypes, whereas the relationship between NDVI and thousand grain weight was significant only in six-rowed barley lines. Genotype variation in NDVI values and, especially, its positive correlations with yield indicate that NDVI technology could be used as an additional tool for selection of early maturing genotypes with better adaptation traits, which could accelerate development of better performing cultivars resilient to future unpredictable changing climate.

AB - Together with corn and rice, barley and wheat are the most important cereal crops. Majority of the worldwide barley production is used in animal nutrition, mostly in pig and poultry diets. Wheat is major energy source primarily grown for food production but depending on the relative market prices of the major feed grains wheat could be highly included in animal diets particularly as corn replacement. Chemical characteristics and nutritional quality of barley and wheat greatly differs and depend of grain cultivar, geographical location and growing conditions. For the accurate formulation of animal diets knowledge on accurate chemical composition of the ingredients is mandatory. In this study chemical composition of five cultivars of winter barley (NS Litos, NS Maestral, Nonius, Novosadski 565 and NS Talos) and four winter wheat cultivars (NS Ilina, NS 40S, NS Mila and NS Obala) was determined. All analyzed cultivars of barley and wheat were grown at four different locations in northern Serbia (Bačka Topola, Kikinda, Senta and Subotica) and harvested in 2018 year. The chemical evaluation of barley and wheat samples included determination of moisture content, crude protein, crude fat, crude ash and crude fiber content. Test weight of all varieties is also determined.

AB - Characterisation of genetic diversity of small grains germplasm is important for their identification, classification and efficient use in breeding. The aim of this study was to assess genetic diversity of winter wheat, durum wheat and triticale varieties and breeder’s lines developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Serbia, during the last 50 years, with morphological characteristics. A total of 26 morphological traits were used for characterization as described in the guidelines for the conduct of tests for Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability of the Internati onal Union for Protection of New Varieties of Plants. The normalised Shannon diversity index (Hꞌ) was used as a measure of morphological diversity. The homogeneity analysis was used to analyse the patterns of variations with categorical data with the R package Homals. An R package VarSelLCM was used to determine the most relevant characteristics for clustering the genotypes. On average, the diversity was higher for traits relating to generative than for those associated with vegetative organs in bread and durum wheat, while in triticale the diversity was higher for traits relating to vegetative plant organs. The Shannon diversity index in bread wheat genotypes ranged from 0.63, to 1.49, with the mean of 1.10, indicating a high morphological diversity. The lower level of morphological diversity was observed in durum wheat, with the smallest mean value of Hꞌ of 0.616 and a range from 0.28 to 0.950. The triticale genotypes showed medium level of morphological diversity with Hꞌ varying from 0.235, to 1.457, and the mean value of 0.752.

The triticale genotypes showed medium level of morphological diversity with Hꞌ varying from 0.235, to 1.457, and the mean value of 0.752.",

AB - Barley (Hordeum vulgare L. subsp. vulgare) is the second most important cereal crop widely grown in a range of various climate and environmental conditions, primarily used for live- stock feed, in alcohol production and human consumption. The main objective of this study was to assess genetic diversity and to reveal the genomic regions, which control the most valuable breeder's traits, important for Serbian barley breeding programme. A set of 71 diverse elite lines and well-adapted commercial barley cultivars was used for genotypic and phenotypic evaluation. The field trial was conducted near Novi Sad, at Rimski Sanéevi, Serbia, while the following agronomic traits were measured during the three growing seasons: heading and flowering time, stem height, yield, thousand grain weight, hectolitre mass and spike length. A set of 15 microsatellites, covering all linkage groups, was used to detect 83 polymorphic alleles with an average of 5.53 alleles per locus. A satisfying level of differentiation and informativeness in almost all genomic loci were found. The PIC values ranged from 0.108 (GMS001) to 0.740 (Bmac0067). Population structure distributed the genotypes into two clusters primarily corresponding with row type. A total number of 18 marker-trait associations was detected in two and/or three years by applying general linear model, whereas mixed linear model confirmed presence of stable associations for 5 QTLs. Flowering time and spike length were associated with 5 analysed markers, whereas hectolitre weight did not show significant associations with the analysed markers. The stable and significant QTLs could be of the great importance for further improvement of barley varieties during the selection of the parents, which carry desirable alleles and could be valuable preliminary groundwork for further genomic selection with fine-tuning refinement.

AB - Chlorophyll content has been used to assess crop nitrogen status, level of abiotic and biotic stress and predict yield. The aim of this study was to determine the level of chlorophyll content in a collection of 100 bread wheat genotypes originating from Europe, Asia and America, and analyse its correlations with flowering time and grain yield. Bread wheat genotypes from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia were analysed for relative chlorophyll content, flowering time and grain yield in a field trial at an experimental site at Rimski šančevi using a completely randomised block experiment design with three replications during 2018/2019. The relative content of chlorophyll index (CCI) was measured with a portable non-destructive clip chlorophyll meter. The number of days to flowering time was calculated from the 1st January to the date when 50% of the plants from the plot have at least one flower. Grain yield was determined at maturity from 5 m2 mechanical harvested plots and calculated at 10% moisture level.

AB - Understanding genetic diversity of durum wheat germplasm is essential for its identification and efficient use in breeding programs. The goal of this study was to assess genetic diversity of durum wheat cultivars from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Serbia, with 26 morphological characteristics based on International Union for Protection of New Varieties of Plants guidelines. The Shannon diversity index was used as an indicator of morphological diversity and it varies from 0.283, for glaucosity of lower side of the flag leaf blade and density of hairiness of uppermost node of the culm, to 0.950, for the ear color, with the mean value of 0.616, indicating a medium to high level of morphological diversity. On average, the diversity was higher for traits relating to generative organs than for those associated with vegetative organs. The 21 morphological characteristics were sufficient to distinguish unique profiles of all durum wheat varieties.

The 21 morphological characteristics were sufficient to distinguish unique profiles of all durum wheat genotypes. The estimation of varietal diversity and identification of morphological characteristics with the highest discriminative power were done by multiple correspondence analysis. The traits that contributed the most to the distinction of genotypes were the ear colouration, length of beak of the lower glume, lower glume shape, ear length of awns at tip relative to ear length and colour of awns. Morphological characterization using the traits with the highest discriminative power could be a useful complementary method for durum wheat germplasm classification and diversity analysis.

AB - The interactions among grain-colonizing species on wheat and their effects on incidence and severity of Fusarium head blight are usually neglected in studies. Although saprophytes can predominate over pathogenic species, studies related to the control of saprophytic mycoflora in wheat production are rare. Here we hypothesized that the infection level of Fusarium and contamination level of Alternaria spp. are significantly influenced by environmental factors and their interactions and investigated the relationship between Fusarium and Alternaria spp. under field conditions and estimate its effect on conventional wheat production, The most prevalent species associated with wheat grain were Alternaria spp. (80% in 2012 and 55% in 2013), and the second was F. graminearum (9% in 2012 and 38% in 2013). In general, varieties that are moderately resistant to Fusarium infection are less contaminated with Alternaria spp. compared to susceptible and moderately susceptible varieties. F. graminearum on Alternaria spp. had a strong antagonistic effect on moderately susceptible and susceptible varieties with P lt 0.001 using Spearman's coefficient of correlation. An infection level of F. graminearum over 25% showed antagonistic activity against Alternaria spp. under field conditions. Using prothioconazole+tebuconazole as a chemical measure to prevent F. graminearum infection on susceptible varieties can be related to an increase in the contamination level of Alternaria spp., jeopardizing the effectiveness of seed health control measures.

AB - Wheat bran is a rich source of dietary fibres, some of essential fatty acids and contains important quantities of starch, protein, vitamins, minerals and phytic acid. It is also well known for its powerful anticarcinogenic and antioxidant properties. Field experiments with a collection of 23 wheat genotypes were conducted during two growing seasons in order to evaluate the effects of genotype (G), growing environment (E) and their interaction (G x E) on the nutrient composition of wheat bran. The samples of the bran portion of wheat grain were obtained as by-products of milling on the MLU 202 laboratory flour mill. Oil content was obtained by exhaustively extracting samples in a soxhlet apparatus using petroleum ether as the extractant. Tocopherols were determined by using extraction with hexane and normal-phase high- performance liquid chromatography with detection in fluorescent region. The mobile phase consisted a mixture of hexane:ethy] acetate (70:30, v/v). The results have shown that all sources of variation significantly affected chemical composition of wheat bran fraction. Total oil contents of wheat bran varied between 3.03-5.37% in the first and between 2.68-4.96% in the second growing season for investigated genotypes. Gas chromatography analyses of wheat bran oil showed major fatty acids to be linoleic, oleic and linolenic acids with wider range of variation expressed in the second growing season. Total tocopherols content in wheat bran extracts ranged from 16.3 to 77.6 mg/kg in the first and from 28.08 to 107.49 mg/kg in the second growing season. Significant differences in oil content and its chemical composition were found among the genotypes, indicating the great genetic potential for improvement. Also, the effect of the environment on all investigated compounds was highly significant, indicating the possibility to produce wheat with high levels of selected health components and antioxidant activities in a specific growing environment.

AB - Modern agriculture depends on improved forms of crop plants, created by breeders from germplasm which provides the genetic information needed to increase yield and quality and add resistance to pests, diseases and adverse environmental factors. Genetic resources are maintained and evaluated in collections located worldwide and supported by national and international public funds. Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad (IFVCNS) has its own collection of wheat genotypes that comprises around 2800 accessions originating from more than 30 countries, as well as 65 wheat ancestors and related species. For the maintenance purpose each year one third of the collection is sown and evaluated for some important characters, enabling us to refresh the seeds of the entire collection in three years. According to the evaluation results the genetic (core) collection with more than 850 entries is extracted from the world collection. From this collection the material for different projects and experiments was chosen and according to their objectives it was extensively evaluated for different agronomical, morphological, physiological and other traits in field and controlled conditions. It was also used for molecular diversity studies, association panels, and genomewide association analyses. One of our international projects is dedicated to redesigning the exploitation of small grains genetic resources towards increased sustainability of grain-value chain (FAO project PR-166 - GRAINEFIT). The project addresses some of FAO sustainability goals, such as to end poverty, achieve food security and improved nutrition, promote sustainable agriculture, combat climate change and its impacts, halt biodiversity loss, promote inclusive societies and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

AB - High grain yield potential and good baking properties are the two primary traits that plant producers consider when selecting new winter wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.). NS Igra is a modern winter wheat cultivar developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad and released in 2016. Cultivar NS Igra was selected from a cross between the French cultivar Aquila and the line Sav/Ren 162 developed from the mapping population between Savannah (Great Britain) and Renesansa (Serbia). The objective of this cross was to develop a modern winter wheat cultivar with the adaptation to the adverse production conditions. NS Igra is an F6 - derived line with the experimental number NS 33-14-3. Commission for the registration of varieties of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia conducted trial at multiple locations in two years, and it was found that NS Igra is a distinct, uniform and stable cultivar, and has higher grain yield than average of three check cultivars, and good technological quality. NS Igra is a mid-late maturity, a stay-green cultivar that should improve the stability of grain yield production and overall end-use quality of the winter wheat crop in the southern Pannonian Plain.

AB - The aim of this study was to analyze traits of leaf appearance and phenological development related to grain yield gain in winter barley cultivars released over the past 50 years. Field trials with 15 six-rowed winter barley cultivars were conducted during two growing seasons. The main leaf appearance and developmental traits were studied. The duration of the emergence-anthesis and emergence-physiological maturity phases decreased by 2.35 and 2.16 GDD yr(1), respectively. The duration of the stem elongation-anthesis phase was 10% longer in modern cultivars. The results showed no clear trend of improvement in final leaf number and phyllochron. The duration of the stem elongation-anthesis phase was positively related with grain number and yield. Constant improvements in grain number and grain weight by fine manipulation of the crop developmental phases could represent an essential strategy for further increases in barley grain yield potential.

AB - The objectives of this study were to investigate: (1) the effects of genotype, environment, and their interactions on the oil content (OC), protein content (PC) and grain yield (GY) of 25 varieties of winter wheat, (2) the correlations among these traits in different environments, and (3) the effects of different climatic variables and their interactions with wheat genotypes for the examined traits. The field experiments were performed on three experimental sites in Serbia in 2009/10 and 2010/11. The most variable traits were GY and PC, while the variations of OC were lower. A significant positive correlation between wheat bran OC and GY was found in one, while highly significant negative correlations between PC and GY were found in three out of six environments. The partial least square regression (PLSR) triplots for protein content, oil content and grain yield enabled us to identify favorable and limiting climatic conditions for each trait and explained 31.9%, 32.6%, and 30.4% of the total variance, respectively. Cvs. Renesansa and Zvezdana were identified as genotypes with high average values for all traits, while cvs. Bankuty 1205 and Banatka were identified as potential sources of high protein content.

AB - The aim of the study was to examine how a slight modification of the standard bread-making procedure for the evaluation of wheat cultivars affects bread making properties of different quality samples, without α-amylase activity. For that purpose, two wheat cultivars of different quality (Zvezdana and NS 40S) were examined from four different localities without diastatic activity. Standard physicochemical and rheological parameters for wheat cultivars evaluation were analysed on the eight samples. Also, bread made from flour of these samples was produced according to the standard bread-making procedure for evaluation wheat cultivars and with addition of sugar and malt according to a modified procedure. The results showed that a slight modification of the standard breadmaking procedure can affect the most important properties of bread (bread volume and bread crumb quality). The average values of both parameters were statistically higher. Additionally, statistical analyses showed that bread volume of both cultivars of differing quality was statistically higher, whereas only Zvezdana had statistically higher bread crumb quality.

AB - Investigations related with factors influencing root and crown rot are rare and mainly related to farming practice and soil management. The main objective of this study was to examine broader range of factors influencing stem-base infestation of winter wheat in the field conditions. The effect of spatial distribution of infected plants on disease index (DIs) assessments was also investigated. Analysis of factors influencing DIs of crown rot of wheat demonstrated significant influence of the growing seasons (P lt 0.001) and extreme fluctuations in winter temperatures (P lt 0.001). In addition to that, localities together with their interaction with the growing season also significantly influenced DIs (P lt 0.001). Aggregation of infected plants influenced variability of DI estimations, and it was pointed out that more extensive investigation should be conducted on broad range of DI in order to establish sampling method giving uniform sampling precision. Fusarium graminearum was shown to be predominant Fusarium species in Serbia (72.6%) using sequence-characterized amplified region analysis. Interestingly F. oxysporum was isolated in higher frequencies (27.4%) than it was reported in the literature. Given that there were no reports on the diversity of Fusarium species causing crown rot of wheat in Serbia, this study presents first report on this important subject. It also indicated that more attention should be focused on combined effects of abiotic and biotic factors influencing stem-base infestation of winter wheat. This knowledge will contribute to better understanding of factors influencing root and crown rot of wheat which would ensure sustainable disease management in the future.

AB - Data related to genetic diversity of F. graminearum chemotypes in Serbia are limited, thus the main objective of this study was to analyze the divergence of genes associated with the trichothecene cluster. F. graminearum was shown to be the dominant Fusarium species in Serbia occurring with frequency of 65.6% in 2016/2017 growing season. Isolates of F. graminearum dominantly belonged to SCAR type 1 (104/105) producing PCR product of 420 bp, but one isolate was proven to be SCAR type 6 producing PCR product of 400 bp. This is the first report of the presence of SCAR type 6 in Southeastern Europe. Results from this study reveal that F. graminearum populations were shown to be DON-DON chemotype with respect to Tri7 and Tri13 genes. All but one of these isolates were 15-AcDON chemotypes based on Tri3 gene. One isolate carried a deletion of Tri7 and was found to be 3-AcDON by using Tri303F/R primer pair. This is the first record on the presence of a 3-AcDON isolate with the Tri7 deletion in Serbia. The Tri7F/Tri7DON primer pair was not effective if isolates carried more than four 11-bp repeats in the Tri7 gene. Primer pair GzTri7f1/r1 was proven to be more effective in comparison with Tri7F/Tri7DON. Genetic variation ranged from 57 to 80% with no significant association of Tri7 alleles with localities. Results of this study have brought new insights into the distribution and population structure of F. graminearum in Serbia.

AB - Wheat root and crown rot is an economically important disease which causes yield losses of up to 50%. Agents of wheat root and crown rot comprise a complex of Fusarium, Oculimacula, Gaeumannomyces and Rhizoctonia pathogens. The analyses of environmental factors effects on the infection by wheat crown rot agents are scarce in Serbia and worldwide. This study was carried out in Mačva region of Serbia in the growing seasons of 2013/2014 and 2016/2017. The study found a significant effect of the growing season, interaction between the growing season and location, as well as winter temperatures on the occurrence of wheat crown rot. The results showed combined action of biotic and abiotic factors on the occurrence of crown rot, which calls for developing more efficient measures to control these pathogens.

abstract = "Wheat root and crown rot is an economically important disease which causes yield losses of up to 50%. The results showed combined action of biotic and abiotic factors on the occurrence of crown rot, which calls for developing more efficient measures to control these pathogens., Trulež korena i prizemnog dela stabla pšenice je ekonomski značajno oboljenje koje prouzrokuje smanjenje prinosa i do 50%. AB - Information about dry matter accumulation is of great importance for further increase of barley yield. Various nonlinear and linear curves have been used to describe vegetative and reproductive growth for a number of agricultural crops. Although dry matter accumulation is an important parameter of crop growth, knowledge about biomass production under agro-ecological conditions of the Pannonian Plain are scarce. This study was undertaken to analyze the pattern of dry matter accumulation in two-rowed winter barley cultivars and changes in biological parameters of the logistic curve under different sowing dates and growing seasons. Therefore, trials with two late cultivars of two-rowed winter barley were conducted in two growing seasons and four sowing dates. Results from this study indicate that dry matter accumulation in both growing seasons followed a typical sigmoid shape. Delayed sowing led to a significant decrease in the maximum value of plant dry weight, the termal time needed to reach maximum value and duration of exponential growth, and increase in maximum crop growth rate. These results indicate that apart from appropriate cultivar selection, early barley sowing is also important to achieve high plant dry matters one of the main determinants of grain yield. .
