AB  - Changes in patterns of rainfall and rising temperatures during grain development have already negatively affected yield gains of temperate cereals. This article reports on barley field trials with 15 two- and 10 six-row barley genotypes evaluated in eight environments where terminal drought was simulated by leaf defoliation applied seven days after heading. The experimental years were contrasting in terms of temperatures during grain filling. The focus of the study was to determine which barley type was more sensitive to terminal drought and high temperatures. The grain filling period was divided in two sub-periods: before (P1) and after (P2) inflection point (IP) of the growth curve, which occurs at the instant when the rate of accumulation ceases to accelerate and begins to slow down. For each period, climatic factors were calculated and their effects on the mean kernel growth rate (RG) were analyzed. To explore genotype x environment interactions for production per spike (PPS), the regression approach was adopted using climatic data in P1 and P2 as explanatory variables. Two-row barley had a significantly longer IP than six-row barley. IP was in a negative relationship with RG and PPS in both barley types. Six-row barley showed higher RG sensibility than two-row barley to drought stress during the period of the extensive kernel growth (P1). The number of days with moderately high (between 25 and 30 degrees C) and high (over 30 degrees C) temperatures had a higher negative effect on RG of two-row barley than six-row barley, particularly in P2. On the other hand, minimum temperatures were more negative for RG of the six-row barley than two-row barley, particularly under control conditions. In general, two-row barley showed better adaptation to low yielding environments, while six-row barley was more responsive to high yielding environments.

AB  - Moldavian balm or Moldavian dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica L.) is native to temperate climate of Asia, but it was naturalized in Eastern and central Europe, North Africa, China and north-eastern United States. This plant with its citrus like flavor is extensively used as a spice and for composition of teas, because of neral and geranial as major constituents of essential oil. D. moldavica is used in food aromatization, perfumery, alcoholic drinks industry, soaps and detergents. Apart from being used as medicinal and spice plant, it is grown as a honey-bearing plant and cultivated in gardens and parks as an ornamental plant. Seed is a good source of fatty oil with spicy taste and aromatic odor, rich in unsaturated fatty acids, principally the linolenic and linoleic acids. This categorizes D. moldavica seed into the group of raw materials suitable for nutraceuticals, food supplements, and functional food applications. Furthermore, numerous investigations show that this plant possesses good antioxidative, antimicrobial and insecticidal activity. It is also used as antinociceptive, sedative, neuroprotective, as well as cardiotonic agents, and for treating chronic mountain sickness.

Chamomile in Republic of Serbia

AB  - As one of the most common medicinal plants, chamomile is grown on approximately 20,000 ha in the world and on 350 -400 ha in Serbia. Good yields can be expected if the plant is grown up to 500 m altitude. The plant is adapted to various soils; it has modest nitrogen demands and tolerates drought and salinity. The usual yields are: 500-1,000 kg/ha of dry flower heads, 150 kg/ha of seed and up to 4.5-5 kg/ha of essential oil. Drug (Chamomillae flos) has moisture below 12%, appropriate physico-chemical and microbiological properties, referred low amount of heavy metals and at least 4 ml/kg of essential oil. The yield of flower heads and the essential oil quantity and quality depend on various environmental factors, as well as on the genetic background. There is more than forty chamomile cultivars realized in the world; three of them originate from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (Banatska, Tip 29 and Tetraploidna). Banatska and Tetraploidna are widely grown. The cultivars are characterized by high yield potential and appropriate essential oil content.
AB  - Kao jedna od najzastupljenijih lekovitih biljaka, kamilica se u svetu gaji na oko 20000 ha, dok se površine u Srbiji procenjuju na 350-400 ha. Najbolje uspeva na nadmorskim visinama do 500 m. Adaptirana je na različite zemljišne uslove, ima skromne potrebe za azotom, toleriše sušu i zaslanjena zemljišta. Uobičajeni prinos suvih cvetnih glavica je 500-1000 kg/ha, semena 150 kg/ha, a etarskog ulja do 4,5-5 kg/ha. Droga (Chamomillae flos) ima vlagu ispod 12%, odgovarajuće fizičko-hemijske i mikrobiološke osobine, propisano nizak sadržaj teških metala i najmanje 4 ml/kg etarskog ulja. Prinos cvetnih glavica, sadržaj i sastav etarskog ulja zavise od brojnih faktora sredine, ali i od genetske konstitucije materijala. U svetu je oplemenjeno četrdesetak sorti, od čega tri u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo (Banatska, Tip 29 i Tetraploidna). U proizvodnji su zastupljene Banatska i Tetraploidna. Odlikuju se visokim potencijalom za prinos i odgovarajućim sadržajem etarskog ulja.

Yield and quality parameters of hokkaido type pumpkins grown in Serbia

AB  - The aim of this study was to assess a set of 40 accessions of Hokkaido type pumpkins (Cucurbita maxima Duchesne) in terms of the traits of agronomic importance and the basic fruit flesh quality parameters, with the emphasis on Serbian environmental conditions. The pumpkins are a part of the larger Cucurbita collection belonging to the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad, where the two-year (2016, 2017) field trial was conducted. The accessions significantly differed in all analyzed parameters. The average values for the traits of agronomic importance were: yield per plant 3.56 kg, fruit weight 1.84 kg, number of fruits per plant 2.03, and anthesis date 180.29. Length of the main stem was in most cases short. Among fruit flesh quality parameters; the average dry weight content was 11.49%, sugars content 43.32 mg/g fresh weight, carotenoids content 50.12 mg/kg fresh weight, proteins content 4.04 mg/g fresh weight, total soluble solids content 8.63 degrees Brix, refractive index 1.347, and pH 6.98. The highest coefficients of variation for agronomic and quality traits were those calculated for yield per plant and carotenoids content. The pumpkins performed better in the first season of the experiment due to more favorable weather, firstly temperature, conditions. The most pronounced adverse effect of high temperatures occurring in 2017 was the one expressed on the content of carotenoids, which was on average 48.4% lower when compared to 2016. Principal component analysis was employed to clarify the relationships among the investigated parameters, and to distinguish those with the most important contribution to the pumpkin variability. The analysis revealed strong correlations among yield per plant, fruit weight and length of the main stem. Carotenoids content and pH also correlated to yield, while the other quality parameters correlated to each other. Defining both first and second principal components, yield per plant and fruit weight were the parameters with the highest contribution to the variability among the assessed pumpkins Concerning quality parameters, fruit flesh dry weight contributed the most to the variability. Therefore, the strategy for breeding Hokkaido type pumpkins adapted to Serbian environmental conditions should be based on combining irrespectively selected high-yield and high-quality accessions.

AB  - The characterization of 41 common bean cultivars and landraces from breeding collection of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia, was done based on phenotypic traits and microsatellite markers. Phenotypic traits were chosen from Bioversity International descriptor list. In addition, main yield components were investigated. Analysis of phaseolin type revealed affiliation of cultivars and landraces to Mesoamerican or Andean gene pool. Cultivars and landraces demonstrated significant diversity level with regard to studied phenotypic traits. Identified variation showed high potential for developing new cultivars with desirable combination of traits. Principal component analysis based on phenotypic traits separated bean cultivars and landraces in two groups, which corresponded to Mesoamerican and Andean determined according to phaseolin type. Putative hybrids, with combination of traits between gene pools were also identified. Analysis of microsatellite data, using twenty-two SSR primer pairs, showed medium gene diversity in studied material. Microsatellite-based cluster analysis separated genotypes in two discrete clusters and several subclusters. No clear separation according to gene pool was found between the clusters, however grouping according to gene pool and patterns of phenotypic variation, following these gene pools, were observed within subclusters. Knowledge on detailed relationships of cultivars and landraces based on phenotypic and molecular data would facilitate identification of candidates for future breeding.

Seed morphology of selected weed plants

AB  - In order to cope with all the natural phenomena and survive on different types of soil and in different climatic conditions, plants have perfected their means of propagation. Weed seeds are characterized by high diversity in all segments, both physical and chemical. Knowledge of the morphological characteristics of seeds and fruits of weed plants (mass, size, shape, colour, luster, odor, appearance of surface structures) is of great importance in the planning of weed control measures. The subject of this study were the seeds of the species Chenopodium album, C. hybridum, Anagallis arvensis, Veronica hederifolia and Amaranthus retroflexus, which were isolated during the weed seed bank assessment in the soil. After the physical extraction from the soil samples, the seeds were separated from the admixture, determined and then photographed with a stereomicroscope. The dimensions (length, width, seed thickness and length of the navel) were measured and any changes in the seed coat produced as a result of physical damage were monitored. The aim of this research was to expand the database, which should contribute to a more efficient determination of weed seeds. It was found that the seeds of the species studied in this paper were often broken and damaged, although in most cases with similar morphological features, as indicated by the literature data. The seeds of the species C. album were an exception, with dimensions significantly different from the data available in the literature. This occurrence can be explained by the diversity of seed anatomy in the Chenopodiaceae family and also by the fact that during their stay in the soil, permanent changes in the seed surface structures are possible.

Seme korova se odlikuje velikom raznolikošću u svim segmentima, kako fizičkim tako i hemijskim. Poznavanje morfoloških osobina semena i plodova korovskih biljaka (masa, veličina, oblik, boja, sjaj, miris, izgled površinskih struktura) ima veliki značaj u planiranju mera za suzbijanje korova. Predmet istraživanja ovog rada bila su semena vrsta Chenopodium album, C. hybridum, Anagallis arvensis, Veronica hederifolia i Amaranthus retroflexus izdvojena tokom procene rezerve semena korovskih biljaka u zemljištu. AB  - Clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) is native to Southern Europe and is cultivated worldwide, as ornamental, as well as essential oil bearing plant.Clary sage is well known for its high value essential oil, widely used in perfumery. Besides, the oil possesses high biological activity and because of that is used against stress, tension, depression, insomnia, etc. However, traditionally clary sage oil was used an agent against gingivitis, stomatitis and aphthae. Apart of that, recent studies reported analgesic, anti-inflamatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and cytotoxic effects. Studies on clary sage seed fatty oil show that it is a good source of edible oil rich in omega 3-linoleic acid. Clary sage is also used in alcoholic beverages, as well as in tobacco industry. Novel investigations indicated that clary sage have great potential in agriculture because of phytoremediation, allelopathic and insecticidal properties.

Long-term high temperature effect on field-grown pumpkins (Cucurbita maxima Duchesne and Cucurbita moschata Duchesne)

AB  - Temperature stress during reproductive phase of life is among environmental constrains with
the most adverse effect on pumpkins, at least in the fields of South and East Europe. The growing
season (May-September) of 2017 was characterized by 56 days of high (>30 °C) and 21 days of extremely
high (>35 °C) maximum daily temperatures, differing from the temperate season of 2016
(33 and 0 days), and from the 1981-2010 averages of 32.4 and 3.3 days, respectively. This was an
opportunity to analyze the effects of the stress on pumpkin quality and agronomic traits. The investigation
was undertaken on field-grown Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita moschata collections,
each comprising 41 genetically divergent accessions. All appropriate agro-technical procedures,
including irrigation, were applied in both seasons of the experiment (2016, 2017); therefore high
temperature was the only stress to which the plants were exposed. The most affected by the stress
was carotenoid content, which was 64.1% (C. maxima) and 75.4% (C. moschata) lower comparing
to the values noted in the temperate season. Concerning other quality traits, protein content was
44.6% reduced in C. moschata, and slightly (6.1%) increased in C. maxima. Dry weight and total soluble
solids contents were moderately increased in both species; and sugar content in C. moschata
only. Refractive index and pH were unaffected by the stress. Concerning agronomic traits, temperature
stress decreased the fruit weight (23.1, 17.3%) and therefore the yield of both C. maxima
(27.0%) and C. moschata (16.1%), exhibiting no significant effect on number of fruits per plant.

AB  - The aim of this study was to access the overall effects of genotype, environment and genotype x environment interaction (GEI), as well as the importance of individual agro-technological traits in the broomcorn [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] panicle yield formation. The performances of 11 broomcorn cultivars grown in eight different seasons are discussed in this paper. The restricted maximum likelihood (REML) variance component estimates model revealed that panicle yield was for the most part dependent on GEI (47.5%), which allowed identification of best genotypes for specific environments. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model revealed that the most important climatic variables for optimal yield are precipitation in vegetation period and maximum air temperature in vegetation, followed by difference between maximum and minimum temperature in vegetation, growing degree days and sum of precipitation. Generally, lower temperature and higher precipitation parameters had beneficial effect on yield. Considering the individual agro-technological traits, the most important for panicle yield were weight of threshed and unthreshed panicle, as well as grain weight per panicle. As directly related to yield; length of the panicle, fibre length and number of fibres per panicle were also important. The best yield (Sava, 11.75 t ha(-1) ) and stability (Jumak, Prima) performances were recorded for locally adapted cultivars. The knowledge obtained in this study is valuable for the identification and understanding of key environmental and agro-technological factors that contribute to the yield of broomcorn panicle.

The restricted maximum likelihood (REML) variance component estimates model revealed that panicle yield was for the most part dependent on GEI (47.5%), which allowed identification of best genotypes for specific environments. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model revealed that the most important climatic variables for optimal yield are precipitation in vegetation period and maximum air temperature in vegetation, followed by difference between maximum and minimum temperature in vegetation, growing degree days and sum of precipitation. Generally, lower temperature and higher precipitation parameters had beneficial effect on yield. Considering the individual agro-technological traits, the most important for panicle yield were weight of threshed and unthreshed panicle, as well as grain weight per panicle. As directly related to yield; length of the panicle, fibre length and number of fibres per panicle were also important. The best yield (Sava, 11.75 t ha(-1) ) and stability (Jumak, Prima) performances were recorded for locally adapted cultivars. The knowledge obtained in this study is valuable for the identification and understanding of key environmental and agro-technological factors that contribute to the yield of broomcorn panicle.",

In order to compare different barley spike types in terms of kernel growth and yield components, we tested 15 two-row and 10 six-row winter genotypes in eight environments where terminal drought was simulated by defoliation at 7 days after heading (7 DAH). Control plants were grown intact. On average, two-row genotypes outyielded six-row genotypes by 17% under control conditions and 33% under simulated late drought. Observations of kernel dry weights from 7 DAH through to harvest maturity at 5-day intervals were regressed onto a measure of thermal time. After preliminary evaluation of four nonlinear (S-shaped) models for kernel dry-weight accumulation, the ordinary logistic model was deemed the most appropriate in most cases and was finally applied to all plant-growth curves. Four parameters were estimated from the logistic model. Whereas two earliness estimators (inflection point and thermal time needed to reach maximum kernel weight) were similar for the two barley types, maximum kernel weight (Y-max) and mean rate of kernel growth (RG) were higher (P lt 0.05) in two-row than in six-row barleys. Differences in Y-max and RG among six-row barley genotypes were greater between control and defoliation treatments than between years, whereas among two-row barley genotypes, differences between years were greater, suggesting better stability of six-row types and better drought tolerance of two-row types in the tested barley set.

AB  - Trichoderma species are widely known for their antagonistic properties, but plant growth promotion and abiotic stress tolerance have also been reported. Mechanisms of abiotic stress tolerance, such as drought in plants in interaction with Trichoderma spp., remain unclear. In this work, the results about the influence of Trichoderma brevicompactum on the physiological parameters and abscisic acid (ABA) content in leaves and roots of tomato, as well as the Trichodermamodulated plant response to drought are presented. Both in optimally watered plants and droughted plants treated with Trichoderma, the relative water content (RWC) was 17% higher than in untreated plants. Drought lowered RWC by 25% in both Trichoderma-untreated and -treated plants. Under drought conditions, the better water status of plants treated with Trichoderma is connected with lower stomatal conductance and closure of stomata. The lower increase of root ABA content in Trichoderma-treated plants that we observed could be an adaptive advantage in sense of smaller inhibition of plant growth induced by drought. Trichoderma modulation of the salicylic acid (SA) marker genes response to drought was observed in leaves. Our results suggest that signalling pathways of jasmonic acid (JA), SA and ABA are involved in response to both drought and Trichoderma. The mutual effect of the tested treatments leads to the modification of gene expression in comparison to the reaction to a single stress. The upregulation of SA marker genes in leaves and JA marker genes in the roots 2 weeks after the interaction with T. brevicompactum indicates that it could be promising biocontrol agent.

AB  - This study was undertaken to investigate the possibilities for breeding drought tolerant tomatoes of different growth type and fruit size. The effects of drought were analyzed and the relationships among the observed traits at optimal irrigation and drought were interpreted using biplot analysis. Greenhouse pot experiment included 40 tomato accessions grown under optimal irrigation and drought (volumetric soil water content 35.0% and 20.9%), designed in complete randomized blocks. Observations were made at the intensive vegetative growth phase. The selection criterion for drought tolerance was plant dry weight. The accessions differed in: the whole plant, shoot and root dry weight, root proportion in plant dry weight (RP), plant height, number of leaves below the first flower branches (NL), number of lateral branches, and the first and second order lateral branches length. Drought resulted in significant decline, with the exceptions of the increased RP and NL. Determinate and indeterminate tomatoes were not significantly different in drought tolerance, implying that both types may be bred for tolerance to the stress; however, the accessions of larger fruit size had comparatively higher water requirements. Results of the biplot analysis indicated that drought tolerance in tomato does not necessarily have to be associated with robust root system and therefore the indirect selection strategy may rely on shoot traits.

The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of several peduncle (the uppermost internode) morpho-anatomical and biochemical traits on grain weight, and to assess the contribution of the peduncle water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) reserves shortly after anthesis to its variation. In 2-year field trials, 61 wheat genotypes were used (27 F-4:5 families, 17 parents used for the crosses and the 17 current best standards), comparing intact control plants (CP) with plants that were defoliated (DP) by cutting off all leaf blades 10 days after anthesis. Estimated contributions of peduncle (culm (C) and flag LS) assimilate reserves to grain weight/spike were from 006 to 031 and from 011 to 045 in CP and DP plants, respectively. In both CP and DP plants, a higher contribution was from the LS than from the C. High peduncle reserve mobilization efficiency, a longer exposed part of the peduncle and larger C storage capacity (through higher parenchyma and/or lower lignified area) were of specific benefit for maintaining grain weight in defoliated plants. F-4:5 families had higher transport capacity in the peduncle, but without any improvement in WSC-related traits compared with the best standards.

AB  - When water stress develops post-anthesis, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants have to rely increasingly on remobilization of previously stored assimilates to maintain grain filling. In two-year field trials, we studied more than 20 agronomic and developmental traits in 61 wheat genotypes (27 F4:5 families, 17 parents used for the crosses and 17 standards), comparing plants that were defoliated (DP) by cutting off all leaf blades 10 days after anthesis with intact control plants (CP). Estimated contributions of stem and sheath assimilate reserves to grain weight/spike were from 10-54% and from 24-84% in CP and DP plants, respectively. Stem-related traits were among key traits determining stem reserve contribution (SRC). The most important genetic variables in differentiating genotypes for stress tolerance were biomass/stem, stem reserves mobilization efficiency and grain filling rate (GFR). Balance among traits related to yield maintenance in DP were more important than their high values. In general F4: 5 families (FAM), that had been crossed to combine typical breeding traits such as biomass and yield components, showed better tolerance under moderate stress than standards and parents.

Germination of tomatoes under PEG-induced drought stress

AB  - The aims of this study were: to assess the effects of drought stress on germination percentage, germination energy and number of days to complete germination in fifteen tomato populations; to distinguish the treatment that is the most suitable for classifying the tomatoes for their response to early-imposed drought; as well as to distinguish populations which could be used for breeding tolerant varieties. The experiment included control germination assay (distilled water) and the increasing (4, 8, and 12%, w/v) polyethylene glycol (PEG) treatments. Both germination percentage and energy considerably decreased with the increasing PEG treatments, while the observed average increase in the number of days required to complete germination remained statistically insignificant. The differences in germination among the populations were most pronounced in 12% PEG treatment, which is therefore recommended for further research. Several populations are indicated as tolerant; however, tomato drought tolerance exhibited as early as at the germination stage does not necessarily indicate the tolerance in later phases of plant development. The population 105 is recommended for breeding drought tolerant varieties.
AB  - Cilj ovog istraživanja je bila procena efekata sušnog stresa na klijavost, energiju klijanja i broj dana do završetka klijanja kod petnaest populacija paradajza; utvrđivanje tretmana koji je najpogodniji za klasifikaciju paradajza na osnovu tolerantnosti na sušu u ranim fazama životnog ciklusa; kao i identifikacija populacija koje bi mogle biti iskorišćene za oplemenjivanje. Ogled je podrazumevao kontrolu (klijanje u prisustvu destilovane vode) i rastuće (4, 8 i 12%, w/v) tretmane polietilen-glikolom (PEG). Klijavost i energija klijanja su bili značajno niži u prisustvu PEG-a. Razlike u klijanju među populacijama paradajza su bile najizraženije kod tretmana 12% PEG, stoga se ovaj tretman preporučuje za dalji rad. Međutim, tolerantnost paradajza na sušu u fazi klijanja nije obavezno indikator tolerantnosti na ograničenu obezbeđenost vodom u kasnijim fazama razvoja biljke. Populacija 105 bi se mogla iskoristiti za oplemenjivanje paradajza tolerantnog na sušu.

AB  - Improving resistance to water and osmotic stresses at the seedling stage is becoming a much more important target for wheat breeders due to an increase in the frequency and severity of drought occurrences at the crop establishment and tillering phases in many wheat growing areas of the world. Ninety-six diverse wheat genotypes were laboratory tested for germination and growth response under osmotic stress induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG). Germination percentage, mean germination time, coleoptile length, shoot length and shoot growth rate were compared under stress (-0.4 MPa) and control (0.0 MPa) conditions. The same genotypes were previously grown in field trials exposed to drought stress during the anthesis and/or grain filling growth stage along with control (optimum) conditions. Grain yield (GY) and 19 other traits of agronomic importance (earliness, stem-related traits, number of kernels, mass of 1000 grains, etc.) were recorded. All seedling traits under PEG-induced water stress showed the highest relationship with the stem and stem-related traits of adult plants. To study the correlation between stress tolerance in the seedling and reproductive stages, three stress indices (tolerance index (TOL), stress susceptibility index (SSI) and stress tolerance index (STI)) for the seedling traits and GY under pre- and post-anthesis drought stress were calculated, based on a mean trait value obtained under stress and the corresponding trait value under control conditions. The ranking of the genotypes based on TOL and STI from seedling traits was found in most cases to be significantly correlated with the ranking of genotypes based on TOL and STI from GY, respectively.

Assessing tomato drought tolerance based on selection indices

AB  - This study was aimed to assess drought tolerance in twelve tomato populations collected in the territory of Serbia and to investigate relationships and repeatability among sixteen drought tolerance indices. Drought tolerance was estimated at the stage of intensive vegetative growth, on the basis of dry weight yield determined at optimal and limited irrigation (volumetric soil water content of 35.0 and 20.9%, respectively). The trial was set in pots placed in the greenhouse. Significant differences were found among populations in terms of all considered parameters; populations G125, G105 and G104 performed well in both irrigation regimes. High repeatability was found between the selection indices TOL and SSPI, STI and GMP, DWdr and YI, and among SI, SSI, RDI, SDI and RD. Principal component analysis allows simultaneous evaluation of populations and interpretation of interrelationships among the indices; it may be recommended as a method of choice for data analysis in further studies on drought tolerance in tomato.
AB  - Ogled je postavljen sa ciljem procene tolerantnosti na sušu dvanaest populacija paradajza prikupljenih na teritoriji Srbije, kao i sa ciljem ispitivanja šesnaest selekcionih indeksa koji se koriste za tu procenu. Tolerantnost na sušu je utvrđena u fazi intenzivnog vegetativnog rasta, na osnovu prinosa suve materije izmerenog u uslovima optimalne i ograničene obezbeđenosti vodom (zapreminski procenat sadržaja vlage u zemljištu 35,0% odnosno 20,9%). Ogled je postavljen u saksijama smeštenim u staklenik. Konstatovane su značajne razlike među populacijama u pogledu svih izučavanih parametara; za populacije G125, G105 i G104 je utvrđen visok prinos suve materije u oba režima zalivanja. Visok stepen ponovljivosti je zabeležen za TOL i SSPI, STI i GMP, DWdr i YI, kao i između SI, SSI, RDI, SDI i RD. Metod glavnih komponenata je omogućio istovremeno vrednovanje populacija i interpretaciju veza između indeksa. Zato može da se preporuči za analizu podataka u budućim istraživanjima koja se tiču tolerantnosti paradajza na sušu.

Shoot and root dry weight in drought exposed tomato populations

AB  - This research was conducted with the aim to among forty-one tested tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) populations distinguish those tolerant to limited water supply. Tolerance assessments were performed by using sixteen drought stress selection indices calculated on the basis of tomato shoot and root dry weight yields determined at water stress and non-stress conditions. Populations were differentiated in groups using the method of cluster analysis. The pot experiment was set in controlled greenhouse conditions and comprised optimally irrigated control and drought treatment (35.0 and 20.9% volumetric soil water content, respectively), imposed at the phase of intensive vegetative growth. The experiment was conducted at the Institute for Vegetable Crops in Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. The analyzed tomatoes exhibited significant differences in terms of response to limited irrigation, which had more pronounced effect on shoot dry weight than on the roots (average decrease of 64.4 and 35.7%, respectively). Consequently, root fraction in the total dry weight increased at drought for 68.2% on average. Shoot and root dry weights were positively correlated at optimal irrigation but not in drought, implying genotypic differences in terms of root adjustments to stress conditions. As for the calculated selection indices, substantial variation was found among the populations enabling their ranking in terms of drought tolerance. Since ranking was not the same in all cases, clustering the populations was performed taking into account all sixteen selection indices. The results of this analysis indicate that populations designated with numbers 126, 124, 131, 125, 128, 105, 101, 138, 110, 132 and 109 in Institute for Vegetable Crops germplasm collection exhibit satisfactory level of drought tolerance at vegetative phase and therefore may be used as parents in breeding programs.

abstract = "This research was conducted with the aim to among forty-one tested tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) populations distinguish those tolerant to limited water supply. Tolerance assessments were performed by using sixteen drought stress selection indices calculated on the basis of tomato shoot and root dry weight yields determined at water stress and non-stress conditions. Populations were differentiated in groups using the method of cluster analysis. The pot experiment was set in controlled greenhouse conditions and comprised optimally irrigated control and drought treatment (35.0 and 20.9% volumetric soil water content, respectively), imposed at the phase of intensive vegetative growth. The experiment was conducted at the Institute for Vegetable Crops in Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. The analyzed tomatoes exhibited significant differences in terms of response to limited irrigation, which had more pronounced effect on shoot dry weight than on the roots (average decrease of 64.4 and 35.7%, respectively). Consequently, root fraction in the total dry weight increased at drought for 68.2% on average. Shoot and root dry weights were positively correlated at optimal irrigation but not in drought, implying genotypic differences in terms of root adjustments to stress conditions. As for the calculated selection indices, substantial variation was found among the populations enabling their ranking in terms of drought tolerance. Since ranking was not the same in all cases, clustering the populations was performed taking into account all sixteen selection indices. The results of this analysis indicate that populations designated with numbers 126, 124, 131, 125, 128, 105, 101, 138, 110, 132 and 109 in Institute for Vegetable Crops germplasm collection exhibit satisfactory level of drought tolerance at vegetative phase and therefore may be used as parents in breeding programs.",

Genetic and association mapping study of wheat agronomic traits under contrasting water regimes

AB  - Genetic analyses and association mapping were performed on a winter wheat core collection of 96 accessions sampled from a variety of geographic origins. Twenty-four agronomic traits were evaluated over 3 years under fully irrigated, rainfed and drought treatments. Grain yield was the most sensitive trait to water deficit and was highly correlated with above-ground biomass per plant and number of kernels per m2. The germplasm was structured into four subpopulations. The association of 46 SSR loci distributed throughout the wheat genome with yield and agronomic traits was analyzed using a general linear model, where subpopulation information was used to control false-positive or spurious marker-trait associations (MTAs). A total of 26, 21 and 29 significant (P < 0.001) MTAs were identified in irrigated, rainfed and drought treatments, respectively. The marker effects ranged from 14.0 to 50.8%. Combined across all treatments, 34 significant (P < 0.001) MTAs were identified with nine markers, and R2 ranged from 14.5 to 50.2%. Marker psp3200 (6DS) and particularly gwm484 (2DS) were associated with many significant MTAs in each treatment and explained the greatest proportion of phenotypic variation. Although we were not able to recognize any marker related to grain yield under drought stress, a number of MTAs associated with developmental and agronomic traits highly correlated with grain yield under drought were identified.

However, marker gwm484 (on chromosome 2D) was associated with yield in six environments, including irrigated, rainfed and drought stress treatments, suggesting it could be used to improve grain yield across a range of environments. Variation in grain yield at this locus was associated with earliness, early vigour, kernels per spikelet and harvest index. Microsatellite locus psp3200 (on chromosome 6D) was associated with yield in dry and hot environments, which was related to earliness, early vigour, productive tillering and total biomass per plant. Partial least squares regression, with nine environmental factors, showed that precipitation from tillering to maturity was the main environmental factor causing marker x environment associations for grain yield.
