AB - The sustainable production of agricultural commodities, such as vegetable proteins and oils, is currently facing the challenge of developing new cropping strategies more e fficient in terms of water, nutrients, and land, while being able to increase the supply of domestic feedstocks. Double cropping of camelina (Camelina sativa L.), sown in the autumn, with sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) can be proposed as a sustainable way to produce in the same growing season and land, multiple feedstocks for both energy, feed and food uses. A preliminary trial was conducted in Novi Sad (Serbia) during the 2018/19 growing season to test: yield performance, oil content and 1000 seed mass of two early sunflower hybrids (NS Dukat and NS H 7749) sown just after the harvest of two camelina varieties (NS Slatka and NS Zlatka which average yield was 920 kg/ha). Sunflower hybrids were also grown in the monocropping system as control. Both sunflower hybrids had higher seed yields in the monocropping system (+24%), but when considering the total yield of the two crops in the double cropping seed yield resulted slightly higher (+1-3%) than that of sunflower in the monocropping system. Although the average oil content and oil yield of sunflower was 6% and 27% higher in the monocropping system, respectively, the high nutritional value of camelina’s oil, which is rich in omega-3, should be also carefully evaluated.

AB - The main goal of sustainable agriculture and rural development is to increase food production and food security in a sustainable way. The increasing demand for food and feed initiated cultivation of new or less cultivated plant species, especially in regions where the staple crops cultivation is difficult. The diverse requirements of agricultural producers, processing industries and consumers, in terms of cultivation, processing and the quality of primary raw materials and products, as well as the economic and ecological benefits of growing alternative crops, impose the need for inter- and multidisciplinary research and the use of twenty-first-century tools for the transfer and application of acquired knowledge. The paper aims to illustrate how agricultural practice and grower demands drive scientific research. Through an overview of knowledge creators and providers, organizations and associations, dedicated events and publications, the work maps new research paths for more advanced applications of these crops.

Sadržaj ulja u semenu iznosi 40-48% (Marjanović Jeromela i Prodanović, 2021), a u našim uslovima proizvodnje 41,5-46,9% (Rajković i sar., 2022).

AB - Alternative plant cultures with favorable agronomic characteristics are a great source of refined edible oil and renewable industrial oil products. False flax stands out as a species with modest growing requirements, short vegetation and diverse use. Accordingly, the breeding program of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad created two cultivars of false flax, NS Zlatka and NS Slatka, which were the research material of this study. The use and production value of these false flax cultivars were determined by examining important seed quality characteristics: oil content, oil yield, protein content and protein yield. The highest oil content was obtained in NS Slatka (45.90%) in 2016, while the highest protein content was 30.30%. The highest oil yield (801 kg/ha in 2017) and the highest protein yield (424 kg/ha in 2017) were detected in NS Zlatka. The data obtained from the field and laboratory were analyzed by analysis of variance, Duncan test and Spearman's correlation coefficient. Statistically significant differences were identified between the cultivars, and strong environmental influence was affirmed. By examining the correlations of the analyzed features, statistically significant correlations were found. The most common fatty acids included linolenic acid (33.80%), linoleic acid (18.81%), oleic acid (15.99%), eicosenoic acid (14.22%) and erucic acid (2.90%). The results obtained are applicable in further breeding program of false flax. They are of special importance in increasing the use value of false flax owing to the oil and meal high quality and potential for even more diverse use.

AB - The Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad, National Institute of the Republic of Serbia has more than 85 years long tradition of plant phenotyping work, but first projects related to use of modern phenotyping platforms were established a decade ago. From these first steps till now, the IFVCNS become one of the leading institutions in this research area in Serbia. So far, the Institute’s researchers finalised four Transnational Access to European Plant Phenotyping Network projects. In these studies, some wheat and sunflower genotypes were identified as potential sources for biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Thus, it was found that wheat cvs. NS 40S, Subotičanka and NS Avangarda have relatively high levels of drought and salt tolerance. Use of Flower Colour Image Analysis (FloCIA) software enhanced ray florets colour determination and paved the way to more objective and accurate sunflower phenotyping, while thermal imaging was used for screening of sunflower for tolerance to Sclerotinia head and stem rot. Also, a collaborative work with the Department of Agri-Food Sciences and Technologies, University of Bologna, Italy have shown a good tolerance of camelina to drought at the germination stage. The Institute has a strategy for more intensive use of modern phenotyping technologies in its future research and practice. Recently approved projects: SmartSun (7732457), CROPINNO (101059784), EMPHASIS-GO (101079772) and AgroServ (101058020), funded by the National Science Foundation of Serbia and EU Commission, are aimed at institutional capacity building in the application of phenomics in crop improvement.

AB - Camelina [Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz] has increased cold, heat, and drought tolerance and decreased susceptibility to diseases and pests than oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). Because water deficit at sowing leads to unsatisfactory stand establishment due to irregular seed germination and emergence, the aim of this study was to understand the response of camelina germination under osmotic stress and identify critical soil moisture levels for successful establishment. Two spring cultivars, NS Slatka and NS Zlatka, developed at the Institute of Field
and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad, Serbia, were compared under 9 levels of osmotic stress, ranging from 0 MPa to - 1.6 MPa. Polyethylene glycol was used to obtain the osmotic potential of the solutions. Results showed that the tested cultivars did not decrease germination under mild and medium osmotic stress levels (down to - 0.8 MPa). However, germination significantly decreased in both cultivars under higher levels of osmotic stress, and NS Zlatka was more sensitive. Germination speed significantly increased at - 0.4 MPa. The estimated osmotic potentials
to stop germination were - 1.45 MPa for NS Slatka and - 1.46 MPa for NS Zlatka. Time to 50% germination also showed a significant bi-linear trend in response to osmotic potential, but in the opposite direction than the one observed in germination. Inflection points were recorded at - 0.77 MPa for NS Slatka and - 0.78 MPa for NS Zlatka, thereafter time to 50% of germination rapidly increased. This study confirmed that camelina can withstand increased levels of drought stress at germination, so it could be considered a more suitable option than oilseed rape on marginal land, or environments with irregular precipitation.

Although the average oil content and oil yield of sunflower was 6% and 27% higher in the monocropping system, respectively, the high nutritional value of camelina’s oil, which is rich
in omega-3, should be also carefully evaluated.

AB - Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz, is a self-pollinated, annual oilseed from the Brassicaceae family, which is gaining interest worldwide due to its frost, heat, and drought tolerance. The aim of this study was to evaluate camelina germination under osmotic stress, and to identify critical soil moisture levels for successful germination establishment. A germination test was set up in controlled conditions, comparing six winter and six spring genotypes with differing seed sizes (ranging from 0.88 to 1.83 g/1000-seeds) under increasing levels of osmotic stress (0, −0.4, −0.8, −1.2, −1.4, −1.6 MPa) that was produced with polyethylene glycol (PEG). The results showed good tolerance of all camelina genotypes to drought at the germination stage. Plants remained unaffected at mild level of osmotic stress (−0.4 MPa) having no significant decrease in germination percentage compared with the control. Even at −1.2 MPa, examined genotypes still had high germination (75%). Significant differences in germination were observed be-tween biotypes, where spring biotypes performed better than winter ones. Shoot and radicle lengths were significantly diminished by imposed osmotic stress, but shoot growth seemed more impacted. In general, spring biotypes had longer shoots and radicles than winter ones. Seed size played a role in the response of camelina to drought, but it depended on biotype and stress level imposed. Camelina confirmed to withstand high levels of drought stress at germination and could be considered as more suitable oil crop than oilseed rape on marginal lands, or areas with irregular precipitation pattern.

AB - Camelina is an oil crop which provides profitable yields, even in unfavorable growing conditions. It tolerates drought better than most other oilseed crops. With a high yield of oil of unique quality, camelina is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and is a valuable source of ω-3 i ω-6 fatty acids. The trend of using proteins from plant sources has conditioned the better use of camelina meal and its use in nutrition

AB - Ova monografija daje opšti pregled proizvodnje i upotrebe lanika kao industrijske sirovine, pre svega, u proizvodnji biogoriva, a zatim i drugih visokovrednih proizvoda.
AB - This monograph provides a general overview of the production and use of the camelina crop as an industrial raw material, first of all, in producing biofuels and other high-value products. First, the botanical classification, etymology, origin, seed quality, economic importance, morphological, biological, and agronomic properties, and technology of camelina production (crop rotation, tillage, plant nutrition, sowing, variety selection, weed, disease, and pest control, harvesting and storage) are described. Camelina has significant agronomic potential and a unique fatty acid composition, but seed yield and oil content must remain the main objectives of breeding to become more competitive compared to other widely distributed and cultivated oil plant species. Then, state-of-the-art regarding utilizing flax's genomic and genetic resources for manipulating genes and metabolic pathways to improve oil production and quality is briefly presented. Furthermore, the traditional and current uses and future refineries based on the integral use of camelina biomass are described. In the technological part, the use of flax as an energy crop in the production of biodiesel, jet biofuels, bioethanol, and other types of biofuels was analyzed. In the chapter dealing with oil production, the techniques of obtaining oil from flax seeds are discussed. Emphasis is placed on camelina seed pretreatment, oil extraction techniques, optimization, kinetics modeling, thermodynamic analysis of the oil extraction process, and composition and physicochemical properties of camelina oil. After that, the production of biodiesel from castor oil by different catalytic and non-catalytic transesterification reactions is critically discussed, with their efficiencies compared. Furthermore, the physicochemical and fuel properties of biodiesel as a transport fuel and the emissions of exhaust gases during its combustion in internal combustion engines, alone or in a mixture with diesel fuel, are considered. In the chapter dealing with jet biofuel production, the types and properties of jet fuels and biofuels, basic raw materials for their production, and current and developing production technologies are indicated. In a separate chapter, the use of straw and oil cake as solid fuel and biofuel production by pyrolysis of straw and cake and catalytic cracking of camelina oil is described. Bioethanol production within a biorefinery based on the total biomass of camelina was also considered. In the end, the techno-economic, ecological, and sociological aspects of camelina cultivation, processing, and use are briefly analyzed. This monograph shows that the camelina plant has a significant potential for the production of not only biofuels but also other highly valuable products. It also indicates the need for research to better utilize this oil raw material for obtaining biofuels and a wide range of products.

AB - In this paper, the fatty acid composition of various vegetable oils was determined using gas chromatography with flame-ionizing detection. The analysed oils were obtained by pressing seeds of different genotypes of sesame, chickpeas, caper spurge, flax, okra, saffron, pumpkin and oily gourd from the collection of alternative oil varieties of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad grown during 2020. Based on the composition of individual fatty acids in the tested samples, the content of saturated fatty acids (SFA), unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), w3, w6, w6/w3 was determined, as well as nutritional indices: AI, TI and HH, on the basis of which the quality of vegetable oils was assessed. The investigated samples were characterized by relatively low content of SFA and high content of UFA. The values of nutritional indices ranged from AI 0.06-0.38, TI 0.08-0.75 and HH 2.75-18.91. Unlike okra oil, which has proven to be a vegetable oil of the undesirable nutritional quality, in terms of the high content of SFA and unfavorable values of nutritional indices, most other oils can be characterized as valuable sources of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid, while only flaxseed oil and molehill oil had favorable low values of w6/w3 fatty acids.

AB - Camelina sativa L. is one of the oldest crops of the Brassicaceae family, first domesticated in the region of south-eastern Europe. It has regained interest as a very promising alternative oilseed crop with broad adaptability, a wide range of tolerances to pests and diseases, and low-input requirements. The genetic diversity in spring camelina proved to be limited, so the identification and characterization of genetic variations in germplasm originating from different sources is considered very useful for development of efficient breeding programmes. The aim of the study was to use SSR markers in order to investigate genetic variation of twenty spring camelina accessions of different origin and estimate their genetic relatedness. Forty-five individual samples were taken from each accession and used for amplification of SSR markers P4C11, P6E4 and LIB19. Percentage of polymorphic loci, number of alleles, effective number of alleles, expected heterozygosity and Shannon’s information index were used to estimate genetic variation. The accessions expressed different levels of genetic variation. The highest variability was found in cultivar Zavolzskij, breeding line CK2X-7, cultivar NS Zlatka and breeding line CK2X-9. The most uniform were cultivar Pernice, and population Maslomania. AMOVA (analysis of molecular variance) showed that 64% of the total genetic variation was attributed to variance within accessions and 36% to variance among them. IBased on genetic distance, accessions were divided in two clades, which both were further divided in two subclades. Genetic distance analysis indicated that there was overlapping in certain breeding programs and exchange of breeding germplasm.

AB - Camelina has been used from ancient times, but recently has re-emerged as a valuable plant with the potential for successful replacement of conventional oilseed crops. The utilisation of camelina and its by-products in animal feed is a matter of scientific study due to their excellent nutritional potential. The present study aimed to investigate the nutritive value of two Serbian camelina seed genotypes (NS Zlatka and NS Slatka) as a potential alternative to commonly used oilseed crops in animal feeding. For that purpose proximate composition, fatty acid profile, amino acid profile and tocopherols were analysed. The study also included the investigation of the content of anti-nutritive compounds that can adversely affect the nutritional value of feed. The results showed that camelina seeds had a high amount of proteins (around 28%), amino acids and γ- tocopherols. Camelina genotypes were characterized by unique fatty acids composition, with its oil consisting of approximately 57% polyunsaturated fatty acids, of which the highest proportions were α-linolenic acid (~37%) and linoleic acid (~17%). An optimal ratio of n-6 and n-3 fatty acids (0.5) was also reported in this study. The concentration of anti-nutritional factors and heavy metals in camelina seeds was below the maximum set limit for feedstuff. To conclude, the investigated Serbian camelina genotypes can be used as a valuable source of proteins, essential fatty acids and tocopherols in animal nutrition and has a great potential to replace conventional oilseeds
