AB - Technology of greenhouse vegetable production had been extensively improved in recent years. In the seedling production, containers with specific volume, containing different types of substrates are used. The main goal of this paper is to present effect of different substrates and different container sizes on the quality of cabbage (Brassica olerecea var. capitata) and cauliflower (Brassica olerecea var. botrytis) seedlings. The highest values of measured plant characteristics (height of the plant, weight of the plant, weight of the root, number of leafs and dry matter content) are measured in the containers with the volume of 90 cm(3), except in the case of the Stender A 240 substrate, where the highest values were measured in the containers of 50 cm(3). The best seedling quality was achieved in the containers with the smallest volume. In this research Klasmann Potground H substrate in 90 cm(3) containers, resulted in best quality seedlings of cabbage and cauliflower.

AB - Leafy vegetables rich in vitamins, minerals and other biologically active substances have a special place in human nutrition. They include a group of yellow-green vegetables, e.g., Lactuca sativa var. foliosa, Cichorium endivia and Cichorium inthybus war. foliosum. A production trial has been established in the Vojvodina province (the village of Kisač near Novi Sad), on a chernozem soil, in order to study the contents of macro-elements and microelements in lettuce species. A two-year study (1998-1999) showed that Cichorium endivia, the variety Maral, had the largest mass of marketable product, while Cichorium inlhybus var. foliosum, variety Rossa di Treviso had the highest percent of dry matter. The leafy lettuces had high contents of K, P and Mg, endive varieties had high contents of Ca. Cichorium endivia and Cichorium inthibus var. foliosum had increased contents of N in relation to K. Cichorium inthybus var. foliosum was found to have a high N requirement. The variety Rossa di Treviso was distinguished for the highest contents of N, K, Zn and Mn. .
