AB - One of the major challenges that plant breeders face in the 21st century is food safety for growing human population coupled with extreme climate changes. Accordingly, the most important breeders’ goal is to find appropriate methods in response to these challenges in order to create high-yielding varieties resilient to abiotic and biotic stressors. The aim of this study was to determine optimal doses of gamma irradiation in two wheat and one barley varieties and to apply the identified doses for development of mutant populations. Wheat and barley varieties showed different reactions to applied doses of gamma irradiation. Wheat varieties had germination rate over 90% at all applied doses while barley seeds showed to be more susceptible to gamma irradiation. Gamma irradiation had greater influence on seedling height which was clearly
demonstrated by growth reduction with increasing radiation doses. ANOVA showed a significant
difference between genotypes, applied doses of gamma radiation as well as genotype by doses
interaction for seedling height. At highest dose of 600 Gy, the reduction of seedling height was
94.6%, 96.5% and 96.8% in Simonida, Rudnik and NS 40S, respectively. The irradiation doses that
resulted in seedling growth reduction by 50% (GR50) were 210 Gy for barley Rudnik and wheat
NS 40S, and 310 Gy for wheat variety Simonida. Identified doses were used for the irradiation of
2000 seeds of each variety in order to produce mutant populations that will be further used in a breeding program for development of varieties with increased resilience to climate change.

AB - Global agricultural productivity and food security are threatened by climate change, the growing world population, and the difficulties posed by the pandemic era. To overcome these challenges and meet food requirements, breeders have applied and implemented different advanced techniques that accelerate plant development and increase crop selection effectiveness. However, only two or three generations could be advanced annually using these approaches. Speed breeding (SB) is an innovative and promising technology to develop new varieties in a shorter time, utilizing the manipulation of controlled environmental conditions. This strategy can reduce the generation length from 2.5 to 5 times compared to traditional methods and accelerate generation advancement and crop improvement, accommodating multiple generations of crops per year. Beside long breeding cycles, SB can address other challenges related to traditional breeding, such as response to environmental conditions, disease and pest management, genetic uniformity, and improving resource efficiency. Combining genomic approaches such as marker-assisted selection, genomic selection, and genome editing with SB offers the capacity to further enhance breeding efficiency by reducing breeding cycle time, enabling early phenotypic assessment, efficient resource utilization, and increasing selection accuracy and genetic gain per year. Genomics-assisted SB holds the potential to revolutionize plant breeding by significantly accelerating the identification and selection of desirable genetic traits, expediting the development of improved crop varieties crucial for addressing global agricultural challenges.

AB - Cereals are grasses (a monocot family Poaceae, also known as Gramineae) cultivated widely for their grains used in human and animal consumption. From ancient times, cereals have played an important role in world agriculture and nowadays their significance is illustrated by the overall production of 2.996 million tons being harvested globally in 2020 (FAOSTAT, 2021). The most important staple cereal crops are wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, barley, oats, and millet. However, wheat, rice, and maize together comprise at least 75% of the world’s grain production, with 761, 757, and 1.162 million tons harvested in 2020, respectively. Rice, sorghum, millet, and wheat are widely produced in Asia; corn and sorghum in America; and barley, rye, and oats in Europe. These three continents produce together 80% of the world’s cereal grains. Cereals are a pivotal nutrient source in both developed and developing countries since their grains contain major nutritional and energy sources (proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, amino acids, fibers) as well as micronutrients (vitamins, magnesium, and zinc) (O’Neil et al., 2010; Papanikolaou & Fulgoni, 2017). However, the utilization pattern of these cereal grains differs. In developed countries, more than 70% of total cereal production is fed to the animals, whereas in underdeveloped countries, 68%–98% of the cereal production is used for human consumption.

AB - Drought is the leading cause of agricultural production loss, with 75% of the world's harvested land sustaining yield losses due to this major abiotic stress. According to global climate models, drought conditions are expected to worsen as droughts will grow more severe and prolonged as a result of climate change. Production of sunflower, the fourth most important oil crop, is affected by drought, hence breeding for drought tolerance presents a major task for breeders. So far, the majority studies were oriented toward understanding changes drought causes on morphological, physiological and more recently, on genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic level. Epigenetic mechanisms of drought tolerance in sunflower are still to these days unrevealed. At the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops several drought tests are being developed for detecting drought tolerant sunflower genotypes from our vast collection. In vitro tests with PEG6000 and rhizothron testing allows detecting genotypes tolerant at early stages of sunflower development, while pot tests in walk-in-chambers enables detection of tolerant sunflower in the flowering stage. We will analyze differentially expressed non-coding sRNAs and lncRNAs and their target genes between the most drought tolerant and least drought tolerant genotype for the identification of epiQTLs that can be used in sunflower breeding programs. Additionally, mild drought stress mimicking field conditions is applied to plants grown in pots at early stage of development, to investigate chromatin dynamics during stress application and after recovery from the stress.

AB - The anthers from six pepper genotypes, two hybrids Edita F1, Homera F1, and 4 cultivars: Duga
bela, Una, Amfora and Kurtovska kapija were used in two-year androgenesis experiment. The
anthers were isolated and cultivated on suitable nutrient media, following appropriate protocols.
All tested pepper genotypes responded differently in terms of callus and androgenic embryos
formation. Four androgenic regenerants (Edita_R1, Edita_R2, Edita_R3 and Edita_R4) from the
genotype Edita F1 were used for molecular evaluation and compared with the donor genotype.
The DNA was extracted according to the CTAB protocol, modified by Somma (2004). SSR markers
Hpms1-117, Hpms 1-168, Hpms 1-274, EPMS 650 and CAMS 117 were used for molecular
analysis. The molecular evaluation of the regenerants showed that all androgenic regenerants
had the same allele for all SSR loci as donor genotype Edita F1. Additionally, all androgenic
regenerants were homozygotes for the five tested loci.

AB - Breeding for diverse crop rotations involves selecting objectives that often overlap with current breeding programs. However, in the context of diverse crop rotations, a new target population of environments emerges, necessitating selection strategies to maximize genetic gain. The primary breeding goal remains productivity, but additional factors specific to diverse crop rotations, such as yield stability, postharvest quality, and traits associated with disease and insect pests, need to be considered. Occasionally, crops are bred for unexplored regions or novel crops are developed, such as perennial grain crops like intermediate wheatgrass, winter oilseeds like pennycress, and cover crops like hairy vetch. In these cases, breeding efforts may focus on crucial domestication traits such as seed shattering and harvestability.

AB - Climate change has a negative impact on the production of field crops, especially during extended periods of drought. One of the key strategies to mitigate the effects of extreme climate conditions is crop breeding aimed at enhancing their adaptability to various growing conditions. However, traditional breeding methods are often time-consuming, labor-intensive, and the evaluation outcomes may be biased. To gain a deeper understanding of the adaptive response of sunflowers to drought stress caused by climate change, the SmartSun Project employs a holistic approach encompassing digital root phenotyping, analysis of epigenetic mechanisms, and the integration of acquired data through machine learning. A protocol for early sunflower root growth has been developed using phenotyping in rhizotrons under different watering conditions (70%, 42%, and 50% volumetric water content). Inbred sunflower lines from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) were tested to identify tolerant and sensitive genotypes. Key morphological root traits that reliably differentiate drought sensitivity have been identified.

abstract = "Klimatske promene negativno utiču na proizvodnju ratarskih useva, posebno tokom dugih sušnih perioda. Identifikovane su ključne morfološke osobine korena koje su pouzdane u razlikovanju osetljivosti na sušu., Climate change has a negative impact on the production of field crops, especially during extended periods of drought.

Plant breeding, as well as other agricultural areas of study, are primarily directed towards developing cultivars to be grown as a sole crop, and only rarely for intercropping. As the cost of agricultural inputs continue to rise, the direct influence of extreme weather changes become more pronounced, highlighting environmental impact of dominant agricultural systems. This drives increased activity in plant breeding within programs supporting so-called alternative agriculture become more active in plant breeding. Intercropping allows the possibility of simultaneously supporting productivity and stability in agricultural production and reaching sustainability goals.

AB - Crop breeding is a continuous process aimed at increasing yields and improving crop resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Recently, frequent and often unpredictable variations in climatic and market conditions have led to the fact that classical breeding methods cannot always provide solutions and a timely response to new challenges in agricultural production. With all this in mind, the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) established the Centre of Excellence for Innovations in the Breeding of Climate-tolerant Plants - Climate Crops with the aim of introducing and applying new breeding techniques (NBT), along with efficient phenotyping platforms in crop breeding programs in IFVCNS. It is expected that the activities within Climate Crops will have a positive impact on the excellence and innovative capacities of IFVCNS in the field of breeding plants tolerant to the extreme weather conditions that occur as a result of climate change.

Besides the main breeding objectives such as breeding for high seed and oil yield, enhancing biotic stress tolerance has been one of the priorities throughout the past. Nowadays with the climate change jeopardizing sunflower production, increasing abiotic stress tolerance is becoming an important breeding goal. Drought as a major abiotic stress induces plant response on different levels: morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular. On molecular level it causes alteration in gene expression, accumulation of different metabolites and synthesis of specific proteins. As drought tolerance is such a complex quantitative trait, it requires exploiting a holistic approach for the detection of mechanisms sunflower develops to withstand it.

AB - High-throughput plant phenotyping (HTPP) tools and platforms have started to be more extensively used during the last decade and integrated into the crop breeding programmes in Serbia. At the beginning, breeding groups have been using different international collaboration projects to access modern HTPP platforms. In these projects, the collections of Serbian wheat, soybean, rapeseed, maize, and sunflower genotypes were analysed under controlled conditions using HTPP equipment. The very valuable data about nitrogen deficiency, salt, heat, drought and other stress-induced responses of the evaluated species and genotypes were obtained. Numerous valuable traits, such as fresh and dry biomass, yield related traits, water consumption, photosynthetic activity, proline, chlorophyll and carbohydrate accumulation, and others were analysed providing useful information for advancing stress tolerance breeding especially important under conditions of the climate change.

AB - Sunflower broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.) is a holoparasitic plant that causes significat yield losses to sunflower crops. Hence, the development of broomrape-resistant hybrids is one of the prime breeding objectives. Using conventional plant breeding methods, resistance genes have been identified which led to the development of a number of resistant hybrids, adapted to different growing regions worldwide. However, while there are many studies on genetic of resistance to broomrape in sunflower, the molecular tools that are available for research on O. cumana are very scarce. Recent advances in sunflower genomics pawed the way for application of modern breeding tools in broomrape breeding and find durable solutions for limiting broomrape spread and virulence. Here we present an overview of those new tools, such as phenotyping, -omics, and genome editing techniques, which need to be introduced into the sunflower breeding programs in order to achieve durable resistance to this parasitic plant.

AB - The European bioeconomy sector generates an annual turnover of around 2 trillion EUR with more than 17 million persons employed. However, in EU there is a lack of alternative crops, which could easily fit the existing rotations and produce valuable feedstocks for multiple end-uses. The diversity and diversification of farming systems can contribute to a sustainable European bioeconomy by securing stable revenues for farmers, lowering environmental negative impacts and increasing resilience to climatic, economic and biological risks. Carinata and camelina are perfect candidates to meet all these specific needs once integrated in agricultural systems with traditional staple crops. Camelina is a mature crop for European agriculture and the availability of winter and spring types makes it quite easily adapted to all European climates. Carinata is an emerging oilseed crop with high tolerance to heat and drought stress and can perfectly act as a late spring/summer double cropping in Mediterranean Europe as well as a main crop in marginal and poorly fertile soils with desertification risks. From both camelina and carinata different products could be obtained with a variety of potential uses: oil – as a feedstock for green chemistry; protein-rich cake - as animal feed ingredient directly or as protein concentrate, and a multitude of high added-value co-products, derived both from seed processing as well as from residual biomass.

AB - Induced mutations are useful tool to broaden the genetic diversity of crops. By using this meticulously orchestrated process, the intention is to harness induced genetic variability to identify and develop new crop varieties that exhibit improved and desirable traits and that are better adapted to changing climate. Within framework of previous IAEA projects, fifteen superior IFVCNS sunflower genotypes, were exposed to gamma rays, fast neutrons, and EMS, altering seedling height. Damage indices (D50 and D30) were calculated for each genotype. Bulk irradiation targeting 30-50% growth reduction will be applied, followed by M1 field cultivation. Promising mutants, that are currently in M6 stage, are currently undergoing selection based on traits like early flowering, reduced stature, leaf and head changes, branching, head angle, sterility, and oil yield. This controlled evolution aims to develop new improved sunflower varieties. Through the activities of the project RER5024, supported by IAEA, mutation breeding is introduced into IFVCNS wheat and barley improvement programs by production and exploitation of three mutant populations.

AB - Drought as a major abiotic stress induces numerous, complex responses in plant cells. Those include gene expression alteration, accumulation of different metabolites, and synthesis of specific proteins. At molecular level, changes are under the control of complex regulatory pathways that include epigenetic mechanisms responsible for suitable and fast reactions to newly occurring stress conditions. Epigenetic modifications cause gene expression alteration through histone posttranscriptional modifications, DNA methylation, and small RNAs and lncRNAs expression. Some of these epigenetic modifications might pass on to the next generation, thus providing a good basis for a quicker response to drought stress. Revealing the epigenetic memory mechanisms involved in stress response could be of use in breeding programs for a prompt adaptation of plants to stress conditions. In the contest of the Cropinno project, funded under the Europe Horizon Programme, our aim is to develop an exploratory research project dedicated to the implementation of multi-omics tools for increasing the climate resilience of sunflowers.

AB - The increasing pressure of climate change, reduction of genetic diversity on farms and constant decrease in arable land present the most challenging aspects for today's crop production. Reintroduction of diverse adapted local varieties and underutilised landraces of wheat, potentially tolerant to different biotic and abiotic stresses, could ensure stable yield under low-input agriculture. The uncharacterized local varieties and landraces of bread and durum wheat from Serbia and Bulgaria, were collected from small-scale farms and gene banks within a project funded by the Benefit-Sharing Fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, aiming to evaluate their genetic diversity. As a part of this comprehensive project, the selected material was evaluated using different molecular marker techniques. The level of genetic diversity and relatedness of a set of 90 Serbian and Bulgarian local varieties and landraces of bread and durum wheat was assessed using microsatellite molecular markers and 25K wheat Infinium Array. The total of 141 alleles was detected at 20 microsatellite loci with an average number of 7.05 alleles per locus. The PIC value varied from 0.344 to 0.837.

AB - With the aid of models used in artificial intelligence, a wide range of data can be processed quickly with high accuracy. The quality of rapeseed oil from 40 genotypes cultivated during four consecutive years was analysed. Two machine learning techniques (artificial neural network – ANN, and random forest regression – RFR) were applied for the modelling of fatty acids content (C16:0; C18:0; C18:1; C18:2; C18:3 and C22:1), α-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol and total tocopherols, according to the data of production year and winter rapeseed genotype. The developed models exerted high-quality anticipation features, showing high r2 during the training cycle. The best fit between the modelled and measured traits for ANN model was observed for erucic acid content. RFR modelling for all fatty acids was more effective than ANN model, with the highest precision for palmitic, stearic, and oleic fatty acids (r2>0.9). This study emphasized the possibility of using ANN and RFR models to model winter rapeseed quality traits.
