AB - Allium species are known as a rich source of many compounds with potential healing effects. Biofortification is recognized as an effective agrotechnical measure for raising the level of biogenic elements—especially microelements in the edible parts of these species, so Allium can be considered as a ‘natural dietary supplement’. The aim of this research was to test the effects of foliar application of Se fertilizer (Na2SeO4) in different doses (control—0, 10, 20 and 30 g per ha) on the content of macro, microelements and secondary metabolites (SMs)—free phenolics, flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives in the edible parts, i.e., leaves of two selected Allium species in Serbia (A. odorum and A. schoenoprasum), which grew in open field conditions over the course of two growing seasons. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF), as an indicator of the ability of plants to accumulate biogenic elements, was also determined. Although with no full regularity, the dose of 10 g of Se per ha yielded the highest content for the most biogenic elements for both alliums in the first growing season, i.e., a dose of 20 g of Se per ha for A. schoenoprasum, and a dose of 30 g of Se per ha for A. odorum in the second growing season. The obtained results justified the Se-biofortification of different alliums. The BAF values indicated the ability of both Allium species to accumulate S, K and P in their leaves during both growing seasons. The accumulation of potentially toxic elements was not recorded for either species, emphasizing the safety of the produced plant material for human consumption. Additionally, Se-treated plants had higher SM contents compared to control plants. The growing season also showed an impact on SM content; i.e., in the second season, characterized as drought-stressed, the synthesis of SMs was significantly higher compared to that in the first season. Further research should be directed towards finding the appropriate dose of Se, expanded in the sense of conducting research in controlled conditions, as well as different ways of applying Se fertilizer. The idea of this study was also to popularize the examined Allium species, which are rarely grown in the territory of Serbia.

AB - Capsicum annuum is valuable source of many bioactive compounds with the protective role in plants against biotic and abiotic stress as well as beneficial effect on humans’ health. This vegetable is susceptible to many infections, including postharvest decay caused by fungus Alternaria alternata. In order to better understanding pepper fruits defense system, the concentration of phenols and ascorbic acid, scavenging activity and antioxidant enzyme activity in three kapia type sweet pepper fruits (Amfora, Una and Kurtovka kapia) infected with fungus A. alternata were determined in this study. Amfora fruits had the highest tolerance to Alternaria infection. Amfora and Una increase total phenol and vitamin C content after wounding and inoculation, while Kurtovska kapia decreased amount of vitamin C. Depending on reaction mechanism, antioxidant tests showed no changes or decrease in antioxidant capacity in treated fruits. Except for phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity in Amfora and Kurtovska kapia and ascorbate peroxidase activity in wounded Kurtovska kapia fruits, all measured enzyme activity showed no changes or decrease by wounding and/or Alternaria infection. According to results of intensity of lipid peroxidation as biological marker of oxidative stress, it can be concluded that wounding and infection disturb redox balance in all examined genotypes. The tested genotypes showed certain difference in antioxidant defence against wounding and pathogen stress.

AB - Tomato is one of the most important species belonging to the Solanaceae family. Focusing on the importance of tomato in human nutrition and the problem of narrowed genetic variability, the aim of the study was to assess morphological and chemical diversity in IFVCNS germplasm collection. Twenty genotypes were analysed for the morphological and chemical fruit traits: average mass (g), length (cm), diameter (cm), pericarp thickness (mm), locules number, moisture content (%), total soluble solids (°Brix), ash content (%), total acidity (%) and pH value. Selected plant material for analysis included: landraces, traditional varieties, breeding lines and commercial varieties. Differences among tomato genotypes in all fruit traits were determined. Fruit mass and locules number had the highest coefficient of variation. The least differences between genotypes were observed in the fruit moisture content. Four principal components accounted for 90.6% of total variance or 36.5%, 24.2%, 19.8% and 10.1%, respectively. Along the axis of the first main component, genotypes were classified into three groups. The first component was defined by fruit length, diameter and mass. The second component was correlated with pericarp thickness and locules number, and the third with moisture content, ash content and total soluble solids. Based on the cluster analysis, genotypes were classified into three groups which were in agreement with the PCA groups. Hybridization between genotypes from different groups was proposed in order to create new hybrids and varieties and to increase tomato germplasm diversity. By crossing those genotypes, improved recombinations in morphological and chemical traits can be expected.

By crossing those genotypes, improved recombinations in morphological and chemical traits can be expected., Paradajz je jedna od najznačajnih vrsta iz familije Solanaceae.

AB - Seed as a highly-valuable resource is preserved in collections for many years. Although the seed is kept under optimal conditions, monitoring of germination and the presence of fungi during seed preservation is of great importance. Therefore the aim of this paper is to examine the seed health status and germination of 43 onion accessions kept in the timespan for 15 years in the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops collection. Germination of seed samples varied from 7-93%. The presence of fungi in the collection was determined on 33 tested samples. Fungi from the genera Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Epicoccum, Fusarium and Penicillium were developed. The following Fusarium species identified on the seeds were F. proliferatum, F. graminearum, F. sporotrichioides, F. solani, F. pseudograminearum and F. equiseti. Based on factor analysis, Fusarium and Penicillium affected germination, while the occurrence of Alternaria species on onion seed is connected to the year of harvest.

AB - Seeds are an important source of primary inoculum for the development of many diseases. Due to the very short vegetation period, controlling the causative agent of the disease on the radish is very difficult. Considering this fact, it is necessary to provide sufficient quantities of seeds of adequate quality and health. The aim of this study was to determine the mycopopulation of radish seeds during different years of production. Seeds used for testing were collected during the period between 2017-2021 from different varieties and localities. After conducting the study, the infection index ranged from 1 to 7%. Fungi of the following genus are represented on the seed in different intensities: Alternaria spp., Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., Rhizopus spp. and the species Aspergillus niger.

AB - Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is a harmful pathogen of the Brassicaceae agricultural plants in Serbian agro-ecological conditions. The bacterium survives in a soil, plant residues, seeds, wild, and weedy plants. The aim of this study was to characterize Xcc isolates that persist in field soil and seeds where they represent a risk to cause disease of Brassicaceae plants. Collection of soil samples was carried out in the period 2015 - 2017 in four locations regions Vojvodina with cabbage cultivation in monoculture or with crop rotations. The cabbage seed samples were collected in the same period in Futog and Despotovo locations (agricultural farms) and in local farmer markets. All isolations were done on SX and YDC agar plates with the addition of cycloheximide with 250 mg/l. Based on the pathogenicity tests, morphological and biochemical characteristics, 28 identified Xcc isolates were selected, 12 from soil and 16 from seeds. Molecular confirmation of the Xcc isolates was done using multiplex PCR (m-PCR) with Xcc-specific primer sets DLH 120/125 and Zup 2309/2310. In all selected isolates and in the reference Xcc strain NCPPB1144 the expected 370 and 619 bp PCR fragments were amplified. Characterization of isolates by rep-PCR fingerprinting using BOX A1R and (GTG)5 primers resulted in informative patterns. Cluster analysis grouped the strain Xcc NCPPB 1144 together with all Xcc isolates, while other tested Xanthomonads were clustered separately. Based on the similarity level of 90%, we obtained three out of 12 as representative isolates from soil and four out of 16 representative seeds isolates. The characterization of Xcc isolates from soil and seeds will enable their comparison with those pathogenic isolated from leaves of Brassicaceae plants.

AB - In this research, we examined the effect of 15 genotypes of selected Allium species: A. sativum L. (10 genotypes), A. ampeloprasum L. var. ampeloprasum (3) and A. cepa L. (2), on the content of metals and metalloids in bulbs. Determination of the content of elements was performed using the method of atomic absorption spectroscopy and ICP-OES method (mg/kg of dry matter). This research found that all tested genotypes differed statistically significantly in the content of Na, K, Ca and Mg both from each other and within the species. The highest content of Na, K, Ca and Mg was established in A. sativum, while the lowest content were observed in onion (A. cepa). Genotypes of A. ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum contained moderate amounts of Na, K, Ca and Mg. The content of certain metals was the same in all genotypes of the tested Allium species and was ˂ 0.01 mg/kg (Hg) and ˂ 0.5 mg/kg (Hg, Co, Ni and Mo). The species A. ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum showed the highest affinity for Cd accumulation in bulbs, followed by A. sativum and A. cepa.

AB - Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is one of the most important Allium species in terms of worldwide production and various usages in human nutrition, medicine, pharmacy and cosmetics. Basic method of garlic propagation is vegetative and creation of new varieties is mainly achieved by clonal selection. The characterization and preservation of samples in germplasm collections is of crucial importance in plant breeding, as well as availability of information about number and characteristics of samples in gene banks. Since pheotypic traits can vary significantly under the influence of environmental factors the characterization is more reliable by using DNA markers. Effective characterization of samples in collections and identification of duplicates is important from the economic aspect, ie. space saving and maintenance costs. The garlic collection of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (IFVCNS) includes 63 samples of autumn and 67 samples of spring garlic. These genotypes represent a valuable genetic pool for the selection of clones with appropriate characteristics, highly adapted for the production in the agro-climatic conditions of Serbia. Molecular characterization will provide more complete insight into diversity of samples, identification of potential duplicates and enable breeders more efficient selection and development of new cultivars.

AB - Allium species are popular and very common vegetable in the human diet. In addition to giving
the smell and taste of food, alliums are well known as plants with potential healing effects.
Flavonoids from alliums have been demonstrated to have numerous phytotherapeutic effects on
human health. In this paper, the content of total flavonoid in the edible parts of selected Allium
species (Allium sativum var. saggitatum L. – bulb; A. fistulosum L. – whole plant; A.
ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum L. – bulb; A. nutans L. - leaves; A. odorum L - leaves.; A.
schoenoprasum L. - leaves) was investigated, with the aim of assessing the quality of these
species. For this purpose six samples of fresh plant material were prepared and extracted with
80% methanol (MeOH). The content of total flavonoid (TFC) was determined by the standard
spectrophotometric aluminum chloride method, and the obtained results were expressed as mg of
quercetin equivalent (QE) per gram of fresh weight. TFC was in range from 0.14 to 0.79 mg/g
QE. The lowest content of TFC was determined in A. fistulosum, while the highest content of
TFC was obtained in A. schoenoprasum. In A. sativum var. saggitatum L. and A. ampeloprasum
var. ampeloprasum L. the presence offlavonoids was not determined.

AB - Aspergillus species are common contaminants of medium and low moisture foods. By their metabolic activity, they cause food spoilage, leading to great economic damage. However, much higher problem are toxigenic species, which under certain conditions can synthesize and excrete mycotoxins, extremely toxic compounds, in food. It is well known that species A. flavus and A. parasiticus can produce aflatoxins, A. carbonarius, A. ochraceus and A. niger (some isolates) can synthesize ochratoxin A (OTA), while A. versicolor can produce sterigmatocystin (STC). Alimentary intake of these toxic compounds in humans and animals organism could causes diseases called mycotoxicosis. Mycotoxicosis are manifested by various harmful effects on human and animal cells, such as cytotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, teratogenicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, etc. To prevent the side effects that different molds species can have as food contaminants, it is important to know the molds species, their properties, as well as the influence of different factors that can stimulate or inhibit their growth. On the other hand, increasing demand for food that is minimally technologically processed and without synthetic additives, have led to an increase of
interest and use of natural additives, such as plant extracts and essential oils.
AB - Aspergillus vrste su česti kontaminenti srednje i niskovlažne hrane. Svojom metaboličkom aktivnošću uzrokuju kvarenje hrane, a samim tim i velike ekonomske štete. Međutim, veliki problem predstavaljaju toksigene vrste, koje pod određenim uslovima mogu sintetisati i izlučiti u hranu izuzetno toksična jedinjenja – mikotoksine. Tako, vrste A. flavus i A. parasiticus su poznate po produkciji aflatoksina, A. carbonarius, A. ochraceus i A. niger (neki izolati) po sintezi ohratoksina A (OTA), a A. versicolor sintetiše sterigmatocistin (STC). Alimentarnim unošenjem ovih toksičnih jedinjenja u organizam ljudi i životinja nastaju oboljenja - mikotoksikoze.

AB - The modern lifestyle imposes the need to discover and introduce foodstuffs that have nutritional
and medicinal value into the food chain. The genus Allium includes a great number of species.
The most studied species are onion, garlic and leek, for which there is evidence of beneficial
effects on human health. Investigation of other, rare grown species of this genus, offers the
possibility of expanding the range of food to vegetable species with potentially enriched chemical
composition. Bearing in mind that the antioxidant properties of food are an important
parameterofits quality, this paper aimed to examine the content of hydroxycinnamic derivatives
(HCAs), as natural antioxidants, in two Allium species - A. schoenoprasum (chives) and A. nutans
(blue chives), grown under different foliar application of selenium - Se (0, 10, 20, 30 g per ha).
The total HCAs content was determined by spectrophotometric method, measured the absorbance
at 525 nm. The obtained results are expressed as mg equivalent of chlorogenic acid (CGAE) per g
of fresh weight. HCAs was in range 0.18 to 0.39 mg/g CGAE for A. schoenoprasum, and from
0.18 to 0.94 mg/g CGAE for A. nutans.

AB - In the production of vegetable crops and flowers, the size of the growing space, i.e. volume of container cells or pots, has a direct impact on water and air properties of the substrate, nutrient availability, and consequently the plant growth. Reactions differ depending on the plant species. Plants belonging to the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) have the root system which is very sensitive to mechanical injuries and which has weak regeneration abilities. Therefore, the volume of the substrate in which their seedlings will be grown is very significant in the seedling production. Finding the optimal substrate volume has an impact on the seedling quality and later on the production itself, but it is also very significant from the economic point of view. Therefore, studies were conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade with the aim to define the optimal substrate volume which would provide the seedlings of the highest quality in the shortest time possible. The cucumber seedlings (Darina F1) were grown in grow chambers at day/night intervals of 14/10h and air temperature of 25/18oC. The seedlings were grown in pots of different volumes: 100, 200, 300, 500 and 1000 cm3. The pots were filled with the substrate TKS 1 (Floragard).

AB - Sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum, L.) is one of the most grown vegetable in the
world because of its nutritional contribution, therapeutic and pharmaceutical value.
Its significance in nutrition is due to high content of natural bioactive compounds
such as phenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, capsaicinoids as well as vitamin A, E and
C. The goal of this study was to determine content of total polyphenols, flavonoids
and potential antioxidant activity of different sweet pepper cultivars. The plant
material for this trial was methanol extracts of three different types of sweet pepper
fruit: bell pepper, kapia type and tomato-pepper type (one cultivar of each fruit type).
The fruits were collected at technological maturity. Determination of total phenolic
content (TP) was estimated using Folin-Ciocalteu method. The total flavonoids
content (TF) was carried out using a procedure based on the flavonoid characteristics
to build metal-complexes with aluminium chloride (AlCl3). Antioxidant capacity of
methanol extracts was measured by 2,2’-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-
sulphonic acid (ABTS) assay and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The
type of sweet pepper with the highest content of TP was tomato-pepper. Bell pepper
showed higher content of TF in comparison with tomato-pepper and kapia type
fruits. Concentration of phenolic compounds in bell pepper fruits was higher than
content in pepper with elongated fruits but lower than values in tomato-pepper.
According to both of antioxidant assays, tested tomato-pepper type exhibited higher
antioxidant activity than the other two pepper cultivars analysed in this paper
probably due to the highest level of TP. This result suggests that phenolic compounds
can make a significant contribution to antioxidant capacity of sweet pepper fruit.

AB - In recent decades the importance of tomato considered as “functional food” is reflected in the rising trend of harvested areas and consumption per capita. During three consecutive years (2010-2012) at experimental fields in Rimski Šančevi near Novi Sad, five landraces, four old varieties, eight breeding lines and three commercial cultivars were chosen for the investigation. Following fruit characteristics were analyzed: average weight (g), length (cm), width (cm), pericarp thickness (mm), locule number, moisture content (%), total soluble solids (°Brix), ash content (%), total acidity (%) and pH value. For the most fruit characteristics high variability was determined. Four principal components explained 90,6% of total variance or 36.5%, 24.2%, 19.8% and 10.1, respectively. Along the axis of the first main component, genotypes were classified into three groups. The objective of this study was to classify 20 tomato genotypes based on physical and chemical traits and to segregate perspective genotypes for improvement of tomato quality by breeding programs.

AB - Drought is a common abiotic constraint affecting world agricultural production. This study was aimed to investigate grafting as a means to improve watermelon response to drought, as well as to assess the effects of different rootstocks on watermelon agronomic and quality traits. The popular vegetable is among species with a rather large water demand. Five scions (Citrullus lanatus breeding lines, experimental hybrids and cultivar) were grafted on nine rootstocks (Citrullus lanatus var. citroides, Lagenaria siceraria, Cucurbita moschata and Cucurbita maxima) in all combinations, without previous knowledge on their compatibility. Plant material originates from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia, where the experiments took place. Three quarters of the total number of the scion-rootstock combinations were successfully acclimatized in a growth chamber, whereas in the open field only a half of previously acclimatized combinations completed life cycle.

AB - Brassicas are a significant source of edible vegetables and is the third most important source of oil on the world level. Black rot, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (XCC) represents the most destructive Brassicas diseases, generally. The bacteria is widespread on all continents, and is present in our country, especially at the places where Brassicas are grown in monoculture. Particularly susceptible are cabbage local genotypes, which are highly appreciated by consumers. Given the importance, frequency and distribution of XCC, there was a need to study the diversity of this pathogen on cabbage, cauliflower, kale, broccoli and oil seed rape. Monitoring was conducted from 2014 to 2017 on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. From different Brassicas 82 bacterial isolates from leaves were collected. All isolates form yellow colonies on the YDC medium and based on biochemical-physiological characteristics were identified preliminarily as XCC.

AB - Downy and powdery mildew are economically important diseases in all cultivated plant species. Pathogens Pseudoperonospora cubensis, Sphaerotheca fuliginea and Erysiphe cichoracearum are one of the limiting factors of successful melon production in agro-ecological conditions of Serbia. Cultivation of less susceptible and resistant genotypes against pathogens is the basis for successful melon production. Consequently, 30 melon genotypes were tested against the causative agent of downy mildew P. cubensis in the fi eld conditions. Also, the susceptibility of 4 lines originating from Ananas melon against causative agents of powdery mildew S. fuliginea and E. cichoracearum in greenhouse was determined. The lowest susceptibility to P. cubensis was expressed in the melon genotypes D11, D7, D13 in the fi rst and D30 in the second evaluation. The highest susceptibility to the mentioned pathogen was expressed in 8 genotypes in the fi rst and 15 genotypes in the second evaluation. In terms of the susceptibility of the tested lines to causative agent of powdery mildew, line A 2/1 was found as most resistant, and line A 3/4 as the most susceptible.

AB - Serbian botanical name for Lathyrus sativus is “sastrica”. Variety of folk names for
grass pea, such “šoder pasulj”, ”cicor”, “radan”, “sekirče” testify its past
prevalence in the diet of local population. Grass pea is usually consumed boiled,
combined with vegetables, with or without meat, or as a salad. It was nearly
forgotten crop and could rarely be seen on Serbian farms. Recently, grass pea has
been reintroduced in Serbia, mostly for the purpose of organic production. It is
especially important in diet of patients suffering from diabetes. For the purpose of
successful reintroduction, 11 accessions of grass pea cultivated in Serbia were
collected and evaluated. Part of the accessions are landraces collected from the
territory of Serbia, while several accessions were introduced years ago, mostly
from Herzegovina. Evaluated seed traits are: seed size (1000 seed weigh; seed
length, width and thickness), seed shape, seed coat surface, seed color and seed
coat patterns. Seeds were mainly of medium size with rhomboid or triangular
shape. The largest seed had an accession collected from locality Erdevik, laying on
the slopes of Fruska gora Mt. Accession with the smallest seed originated from the
locality Bački Petrovac. Six accessions had monochrome, mainly cream seeds
(except one accession with yellow-green seed) and smooth seed coat surface. The
rest of the accessions are mixture of two types of seeds: monochrome (yellowgreen or cream with smooth seed coat surface) and multicolor (brown, streaked and
tubercular seed coat).

AB - Bacterial diseases present serious problem in agricultural production which is
reflected in reduction of quality and yield of cultivated plants. Long term use of
copper compounds in bacterial diseases control can induce resistance in bacterial
population. Considering the economic importance of bacterial diseases on
cultivated plants the aim of this research was to tested different copper compounds
(copper-hydroxide, copper-oxychloride, copper (II) sulphate, copper (III) sulphate)
in different concentrations (100, 200, 300, 350 ppm) against one of the most
distributed plant pathogenic bacteria (37 strains) in vitro conditions. Obtained
results suggested that bacterial strains showed different sensitivity to tested copper
compounds and concentrations. The lowest sensitivity was observed in strains of
Pseudomonas syringae pv. morsprunorum race 1 (KBNS75; M25) and Erwinia
amylovora (JČ5, DHM1) in copper-hydroxide and copper-oxychloride. Strains of
Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap1-5) and X. campestris pv. campestris
(UR-1) showed the highest sensitivity to copper compounds compared to other
tested strains.
