AB - Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is a legume with high protein content and good quantities of essential amino acids. It has high tolerance to drought, high adaptability to extreme conditions, disease resistance and low input requirement for cultivation, which makes it very useful for cultivation by resource-poor farmers. Potential usage of grass pea is limited due to the presence of anti-nutritional factors including protease inhibitors, especially trypsin inhibitors. They have a major impact on nutritional value, by inhibiting pancreatic serine proteases (thus impairing protein digestion), but are also likely to protect legume seed against attack by predators. Although once extensively grown throughout Balkan Peninsula, grass pea was nearly forgotten. In recent years there was an effort to reintroduce and increase the interest of researchers and farmers in this crop. The aim of this study was to establish whether genotype and environment have significant influences on trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA) in grass pea and to determine whether TIA is correlated with seed protein content.

AB - Legumes represent a valuable source of proteins in human and animal nutrition, as well as of different nutrients. Also, they enable diversification of agroecosystems and can be considered climate smart crops. Therefore, they are gaining importance in both developed and developing countries. The most important, and often limiting factor in legume production is the presence of the bean weevil (Acanthoscelides obtectus). This work tested the suitability of three different legume species, i. e. common bean, grass pea and faba bean (two accessions of each species) with growing interest in human nutrition, for the development and population growth of this pest, with special emphasis on the levels of anti-nutritive compounds – trypsin inhibitors. The suitability was assessed based on the progeny production after each month. The development and progeny production were significantly affected by the legume species, but also by the accessions. The highest number of emerged adults was on common bean, while the lowest regardless on observation period, was on faba bean, indicating its low suitability for weevil development. Correlation analysis detected significant influence of the level of trypsin inhibitors on progeny production.

AB - The research has been conducted during a three-year period in order to determine
the protein content in bean grains grown by organic principles and to choose more
suitable variety for farming in organic production. The field experiment was set
by a split-plot design in 4 repetitions on calcareous chernozem. The large plots
were cropped with varieties Maksa and Zlatko, while control subplot was treated
by agro-technical treatments permitted in organic production. In the research, the
starting hypothesis was that the protein content in bean grains will depend on variety
and applied agro-technics in organic bean growing technology. The protein
content in bean grain was statistically significantly dependent on agro-ecological
conditions during the production year, variety and applied agro-technics. For the
production of bean by organic principles, Maksa variety is recommended. It is
possible to achieve high protein content in beans grown in accordance with the
principles of sustainable ecological development.

hrana i lek, izvor belančevina, visokoenergetska koncentrovana namirnica.
Zbog kratke
vegetacije i drugih bioloških osobina pasulj je vrlo intenzivan i osetljiv usev.

good preceding crop. Dry beans are considered the national dish of all people from
Balkans, and it is inviolable in Serbia. Crossing of important trade routes, land and
climate, turbulent history, which caused frequent population migrations, led to a
great divergence of bean germplasm in our area. Domestic bean populations are
exceptional genetic potential for breeding of new varieties that could give satisfactory results in these environmental conditions, with the application of appropriate
cultivation technology.
Areas under beans in Serbia are declining. Due to short vegetation and other biological traits, bean is very intensive and sensitive crop. This is emphasized by exceptional sensitivity to polyphagous insects, as well as the presence numerous pathogens.
Low average yield is affected by weather, primarily high temperatures and drought.
Yields could be increased by correct and timely application of modern agronomic
knowledge, irrigated cultivation, in a joint crop or by sowing as second crop.

AB - Genetic diversity and structure of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm from Serbia, comprising 118 landraces and 18 cultivars, was assessed with the application of 27 Single Sequence Repeats (SSR) markers. Thirteen accessions from Agricultural Institute of Slovenia were used as references for gene pool determination. Main parameters of genetic diversity were calculated for each SSR loci, i.e. number of different and rare alleles, number of effective alleles, Shannon’s information index, observed and expected heterozygosity and polymorphic information content. A total of 445 allelic variants, with 16.5 alleles per locus on average, were detected. Mean gene diversity (He = 0.79) indicated sufficient reservoir of genetic variation preserved in studied bean germplasm. Landraces displayed higher variability compared to cultivars (405 in relation to 233 allelic variants). Genetic structure and relatedness of accessions was assessed by model-based method and hierarchical clustering method in combination with genetic distance calculation. The Bayesian clustering model implemented in STRUCTURE software, on the primary level (K = 2), revealed clear separation of accessions into two groups, corresponding to gene pool affiliation. Mesoamerican gene pool (M) was represented with 23.5% of accessions, while Andean (A) was larger, composed of 68.4% of studied germplasm. Small group (8.1%) showed admixed genetic structure between two gene pools. Additional variation in respect to two recognized gene pools was revealed (K = 3), whose basis was acknowledged to be within Andean gene pool. Further subdivision of accessions (K = 8), mainly according to the seed forms, was observed. Genetic distance analysis associated with Neighbour-joining clustering method revealed grouping pattern of landraces and cultivars corresponding to the gene pool and their seed phenotypes. Classification and structuring of the bean accessions according to and beyond the gene pool of origin should facilitate conservation strategies and breeding of this material. Combining the information of phenotypic variation obtained in previous research and molecular data reveled in this study will assist in selection of parental components for breeding, or in the choice of smaller sample in order to further acknowledge their breeding value. In addition, obtained results of this work should serve as an additional information on common bean germplasm variation in Western Balkans and beyond, in Europe.

AB - Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is a less common and nearly forgotten crop in many
countries, including Slovenia and Serbia. In the present study, genetic analysis and
seed characteristics of the collection of 22 grass pea accessions from several
Southeast European plant gene banks were examined. The collection was produced
in an open-field experiment at two countries/locations, i.e. Slovenia/Ljubljana –
Jablje and Serbia/Novi Sad – Rimski Šančevi, during the 2019 growing season. For
analysis of genetic diversity, specific high polymorphic SSR markers were applied.
Initial screening at 12 species-specific SSR loci using binary data revealed a great
genetic diversity among the grass pea accessions within a collection and three genetic
groups were formed. Differences in seed size were measured using descriptors for
seed length, width and thickness, and 100-seed weight. Furthermore, several seed
colour characters using IBPGR descriptors were visually assessed. The average seed
length, width and thickness of the seeds in the collection were 9.0 mm, 8.3 mm and
5.4 mm, respectively, while 100-seed weight ranged considerably from 11.7 g to
38.9 g. The highest differences between growing location were seen for 100-seed
weight where the coefficient of variability reached 23.5%. The examined grass pea
accessions had less monochromatic (one colour) and more colourful seeds, with two
or three colours.

AB - Efficiency of aqueous extracts of seed from five cultivars of faba bean in the removal of water turbidity was perceived through content of components known for the ability to clarify water as well as through their interactions. Concentrations of protein, phenolics (tannins) and phytic acid differed significantly between aqueous extracts of cultivars' seed. At applied dosages of aqueous extracts concentrations of protein, phenolics and phytic acid in coagulation tests varied within the ranges 0.11-0.77 mg/L, 0.8-6.2 mu g/L and 0.2-0.7 mu g/L, respectively. Experiments carried out in model water with initial 45 nephelometric turbidity units and at pH 7 resulted in turbidity removal from 28 to 65%. Data analysis revealed that under applied conditions the major determinant of coagulation activity was concentration of phenolics (very significant) followed by that of protein (significant). The removal of water turbidity was also significantly affected by the interaction between concentrations of phenolics and phytic acid as well as that between concentrations of protein and phytic acid. In addition, increase in the content of organic matter in treated water was below the value recommended by council drinking water directive.

AB - Phenotypic diversity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) landraces and reference cultivars were evaluated based on variability of twelve traits, chosen according to international descriptor list. Landraces were collected form 53 locations in Republic of Serbia. Origin and dissemination of local common bean germplasm was assessed based on variation of phaseolin types. Phaseolin analysis showed that landraces of both Mesoamerican and Andean origin are grown in Serbia, with higher frequency of Andean types. Ratio of three phaseolin types found in studied common bean germplasm suggested its introduction in Serbia from northern borders. Shannon-Weaver index was used as indicator of phenotypic diversity, showing high diversity level among studied germplasm. HOMALS analysis was performed in order to determine discriminative power of traits and structure of studied germplasm. Seed and flower traits, as well as growth habit type had highest, opposed to phaseolin type with lowest discriminative power among genotypes. Genotypes were phenotypically individualized and classified in five homogenous groups according to their profiles, displaying differentiation on the gene pool level, as well.

AB - The ECPGR (European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources) Grain legumes working group cover a range of species, which have enormous benefits for environment, food security and as well as the breeding material. However, despite its huge potential lots of species, including Lathyrus sp., are not well represented in European collection and enough exploited for different purposes. As starting point of EUGrainLeg project the activities act in two directions: i) AEGIS progress and improved data on European grain legumes plant genetic resources, and ii) improvement of group strategy work – in view of subgroup establishment based on species interest, in order to facilitate experience and knowledge exchange. The task of establishing the European grain legume collection needs updates and improvements, taking in account the large number of species managed inside the group. abstract = "The ECPGR (European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources) Grain legumes working group cover a range of species, which have enormous benefits for environment, food security and as well as the breeding material. AB - Due to the narrow range of available herbicides, weeds are one of the limiting factors for intercropping of dry bean and maize. Various benefits of this production method have been confirmed by the results of many authors. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of using a cycloxydim-tolerant maize hybrid to expand the ability of weed control in intercroping systems with bean. Three-year field trials were conducted from 2015 to 2017, at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in the vicinity of Novi Sad. Cycloxydim-tolerant maize and dry bean were sown mechanically in alternating strips, with one strip consisting of 4 rows of maize and the other strip containing 6 rows of bean. Combinations of herbicides based on dimethenamid-P, linuron, bentazone and cycloxydim were studied. The effect of herbicides on the number of weeds, fresh weed mass and grain yield of bean and maize was evaluated. No phytotoxicity of the herbicides was observed on the crops, indicating the safety of their use in this production system. The most common weeds were Chenopodium album, Datura stramonium and Sorghum halepense developed from rhizomes. Herbicides had a significant effect in reducing the abundance and fresh mass of the above-ground weed parts. A special contribution of the results obtained is the unique ability to control S. halepense using the cycloxydim-based product. Owing to the above-mentioned possibility, a significant reduction in the number and mass of S. halepense shoots developed from rhizomes was achieved (100% in 2015 and 2016, and >90% in 2017). The results of our trials confirm the contribution of the extension of the choice of herbicides with cycloxydim in this system of intercropping with dry bean and cycloxydim-tolerant maize.

AB - Serbian botanical name for Lathyrus sativus is “sastrica”. Variety of folk names for
grass pea, such “šoder pasulj”, ”cicor”, “radan”, “sekirče” testify its past
prevalence in the diet of local population. Grass pea is usually consumed boiled,
combined with vegetables, with or without meat, or as a salad. It was nearly
forgotten crop and could rarely be seen on Serbian farms. Recently, grass pea has
been reintroduced in Serbia, mostly for the purpose of organic production. It is
especially important in diet of patients suffering from diabetes. For the purpose of
successful reintroduction, 11 accessions of grass pea cultivated in Serbia were
collected and evaluated. Part of the accessions are landraces collected from the
territory of Serbia, while several accessions were introduced years ago, mostly
from Herzegovina. Evaluated seed traits are: seed size (1000 seed weigh; seed
length, width and thickness), seed shape, seed coat surface, seed color and seed
coat patterns. Seeds were mainly of medium size with rhomboid or triangular
shape. The largest seed had an accession collected from locality Erdevik, laying on
the slopes of Fruska gora Mt. Accession with the smallest seed originated from the
locality Bački Petrovac. Six accessions had monochrome, mainly cream seeds
(except one accession with yellow-green seed) and smooth seed coat surface. The
rest of the accessions are mixture of two types of seeds: monochrome (yellowgreen or cream with smooth seed coat surface) and multicolor (brown, streaked and
tubercular seed coat).

AB - The biennial two-factorial field experiment was set by split-plot design with two bean varieties and five treatments with organic fertilizer and microbiological preparations. The aim was to identify the influence of the examination factors on the morphological characteristics — number of side branches and plant height which indirectly affects the yield in an organic system of production. Variety Zlatko has, in average, formed 7.80% more side branches and a 2.50% greater height in comparison with the variety Maksa.

AB - The characterization of 41 common bean cultivars and landraces from breeding collection of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia, was done based on phenotypic traits and microsatellite markers. Phenotypic traits were chosen from Bioversity International descriptor list. In addition, main yield components were investigated. Analysis of phaseolin type revealed affiliation of cultivars and landraces to Mesoamerican or Andean gene pool. Cultivars and landraces demonstrated significant diversity level with regard to studied phenotypic traits. Identified variation showed high potential for developing new cultivars with desirable combination of traits. Principal component analysis based on phenotypic traits separated bean cultivars and landraces in two groups, which corresponded to Mesoamerican and Andean determined according to phaseolin type. Putative hybrids, with combination of traits between gene pools were also identified. Analysis of microsatellite data, using twenty-two SSR primer pairs, showed medium gene diversity in studied material. Microsatellite-based cluster analysis separated genotypes in two discrete clusters and several subclusters. No clear separation according to gene pool was found between the clusters, however grouping according to gene pool and patterns of phenotypic variation, following these gene pools, were observed within subclusters. Knowledge on detailed relationships of cultivars and landraces based on phenotypic and molecular data would facilitate identification of candidates for future breeding.

AB - Beans and maize used to be grown in intercropping. With development of maize
hybrids tolerant to cycloxydim, it is possible to grow them in intercropping again, with
weed control including perennial grass weeds, thus applying selective herbicides for
both crops. Bean yield variations (cultivar Maksa) are shown in this paper. Cultivar was
sown in alternate bands with maize (NS 444 ultra, tolerant to cycloxydim) depending on
methods of weed control (without and with hoeing and three herbicide treatments) and
weather conditions during two growing seasons of bean. Combined application of
herbicides after sowing, before emergence and during growing season showed better,
especially in a year less favourable for bean development.

AB - In South-Eastern Europe, the majority of runner-bean (Phaseolus coccineus L.) production is based on local populations grown mainly in home gardens. The local runner-bean plants are well adapted to their specific growing conditions and microclimate agro-environments, and show great morpho-agronomic diversity. Here, 142 runner-bean accessions from the five South-Eastern European countries of Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia and Romania were sown and cultivated in their respective countries and characterised using 28 quantitative and qualitative morpho-agronomic descriptors for Phaseolus spp. based on inflorescences, leaves, plants, pods and seeds. For each of these morpho-agronomic descriptors, the accessions can be classified into two or three specific groups. The highest correlations were observed within the fluorescence, seed and pod traits. The highest variability, at 76.39%, was between the different countries, representing different geographic origins, while the variability within the countries was 23.61%. Cluster analysis based on these collected morpho-agronomic data also classified the accessions into three groups according to genetic origins. The data obtained serve as useful genetic information for plant breeders for the breeding of new bean varieties for further studies of the morpho-agronomic traits of the runner bean.

AB - Trypsin inhibitors could limit utilization of legumes in human nutrition, but they could also have beneficial health effects. The objective of this study was to measure trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA) of different legumes using microtiter plate method and to identify factors that contribute to uncertainty of TIA measurement. TIA measurements were performed on seeds of faba bean, pea, common vetch, soybean, and common bean cultivars. The significant effect of legume crop on TIA measurement uncertainty was confirmed with P = 0.045. Certain sources of measurement uncertainty were related with the content of trypsin inhibitors (Tis) in legume seeds. In respect to that, significant effect of level of sample dilution (P E, 0.001) was confirmed. Significant influence of the repeated absorbance measurement of sample reaction mixture on uncertainty of TIA measurement was identified (P E, 0.001), and it took 60% of overall TIA measurement uncertainty for soybean cultivars. TIA of soybean cultivars exceeded 90 TUI/mg. Repeated absorbance measurement of positive control reaction mixture took 70% of TIA measurement uncertainty of cultivars with TIA lesser than 4.5 TUI/mg. Graduated cylinder used for preparation of the final sample solutions took the range from 45 to 90% of overall TIA measurement uncertainty of the cultivars whose TIA were in the middle of previously mentioned. The uncertainty of TIA measurement of legume crops was not studied before; thus, this study pointed out that acquiring insight into factors contributing to uncertainty of TIA measurement could give directions for improvement of TIA testing if microtiter plate method is used.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine the microbiological activity in soil under beans in organic and conventional production. Organic production was conducted on the field in the village Pivnice (Serbia), while conventional production was conducted in the village Curug (Serbia) during 2014 on the chernosem type soil. Cultivars of beans Belko, Dvadesetica, Maksa, Slavonac, Sremac, Zlatko were used. Before sowing, the bean seeds were inoculated by biofertilizers NS-Nitragin. NS-Nitragin contains a mixture of selected strains of symbiotic bacteria Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. phaseoli. The total number of actinomycetes, ammonifiers, Azotobacter, bacteria and fungi were determined. At the end of vegetation period in conventional production the highest number of actinomycetes (5.83) and fungi (4.87) was recorded in cultivar Dvadesetica. In organic production the highest number of ammonifires was in cultivar Sremac (9.91). The highest number of bacteria was in cultivar Dvadesetica (9.08) and the highest number of fungi was in cultivar Zlatko (5.14). The results have shown that number of microorganisms was higher in organic production.

AB - A trial involving intercropped and pure stands of carrots 'Nantes' and onions 'Kupusinski jabučar' was conducted on a certified organic farm in Futog. The yield, morphological and nutritional properties of the crops analyzed were determined in the study. Furthermore, the biological efficiency of intercropping was assessed using the relative yield (RYT) and the land use efficiency index (LER). The mixture of crops had influenced the morphological properties examined. In both experimental plant species, the nutritional properties of onions and carrots exhibited a higher content of dry matter (DM) in the double-row growing system without maize gluten meal (onions - 11.42 %, carrots - 10.45 %) compared to single crops. The highest content of β-carotene was determined by alternating single rows of onions and carrots in a plot without the use of gluten (68.94 μg/g DM). The relative yield and the land use efficiency index have shown that there is a biological efficiency of combining carrots and onion as the values obtained are higher than 1. Carrots and black onions are favorable for intercropping because they are complementary, thus interactively contribute to increasing the yield per unit area and improving the nutritional properties.

AB - In the framework of diversification of vegetable production in Kazakhstan, special attention is paid to minor vegetable crops. Conveyor cultivation of green vegetables plays an important role in providing fresh vegetables to consumers year-round. In this regard, two types of lettuce have been studied: Leaf lettuce and heading lettuce. The studies were performed in 2014-2016 at the Kazakh Research Institute of Potato and Vegetables Growing and at the Kazakh National Agrarian University. It has been established that the conveyor cultivation of leaf and heading lettuce with the use of protected and open soil is an efficient method of uninterrupted supply of local green products to the population in the off-season period. In protected soil, lettuce should be cultivated in four periods with the use of rootstock, by sowing seeds from the first third of January until the second third of February. The age of rootstock is 23 to 26 days for leaf lettuce and 28-32 days for heading lettuce. For obtaining early lettuce in the open ground, it should be sown in four periods, starting from the first third of April until second third of May. During the first period, rootstock is to be used (18 days old) and in the other three periods, the method without rootstock is to be used. Varieties of Odessian Kucheryavets lettuce (leaf lettuce) and Krupnokochanny (heading lettuce) are recommended for vegetable farms.

AB - Dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most important food legumes and source of proteins and dietary fibers. Two major gene pools exist in cultivated dry bean, one being Middle American, and second Andean. Dry bean accessions and cultivars belonging to each of these two gene pools are distinguished based of phenotypic traits, as well as on molecular and biochemical level. Most of the dry bean germplasm is maintained ex situ in gene banks and collections of the research institutes around the world which is characterized with high level of genetic diversity. Possibility to identify this genetic variation is of greatest importance for conservation and utilization of dry bean germplasm. Phenotypic evaluation is the first step in discrimination and classification of these accessions.
The aim of this work was to assess phenotypic diversity of 37 dry bean genotypes (domestic and foreign cultivars and landraces) held at dry bean breeding collection of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad. We analyzed eight qualitative traits (growth type, color of flower standard, color of flower wings, pod color, seed pattern, color of seed coat, seed brilliance, seed shape) following the Bioversity International Key descriptor for common bean and six quantitative traits (number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, seed weight per plant, 1000 seed mass, number of days to flowering, number of days to maturity). Multivariate analyses, consisting of principal component analysis and cluster analysis were applied. In a principal component analysis first two axis explained 46.9% of variation, and the most important traits in discriminating between genotypes were separated. The genotypes differed mostly for number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, color of flower standard, color of flower wings, seed coat color and 1000 seed mass. Positive correlations were observed between number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, seed weight per plant and growth habit, as well as between growth habit and number of day to flowering and number of days to maturity. Negative correlation was observed between 1000 seed mass and other yield components and growth habit. Both principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis clustered the genotypes into two major groups presenting Mesoamerican and Andean gene pools. Only two foreign cultivars (KP-12 and KP-13) were distinguished as third, separate group. Possible hybrids between these two genepools were identified, meaning genotypes with a combination of traits representing Andean or Mesoamerican gene pool.
