AB - Delivery of micronutrients to plants through seed priming
improves seedling vigour and increases crops yields. Two-year
filed trial was conducted in Pančevo, Serbia, with aim to study the
effect of seed priming with zinc (Zn) on field performance of three
maize hybrids on calcareous chernozem deficient in plant available
Zn. Seed priming treatments were: control (without priming),
water priming and priming with 4 mM zinc sulphate water solution.
Seed priming had significant effect on early plant growth,
plant height, yield components, grain yield and grain Zn concentration.
Zn-priming promoted plant growth and increased final plant
height. Across two growing seasons with contrasting precipitation
and three tested maize hybrids, Zn-priming resulted in an average
increase of grain yield by about 18% compared to control, and by
about 8.4% compared to water priming. A significant relationship
between plant growth parameters, grain yield components and
grain yield was detected. Grain Zn concentration was increased by
Zn-priming in two hybrids in the season with less precipitation and
in one hybrid in the second season. The results imply that using the
seeds with elevated Zn content can improve overall field performance
of maize grown on calcareous chernozem.

AB - Buckwheat and soybean are regarded as important crops in organic production and their production could contribute to achieving farm sustainability. However, this significance derives from a preceding effect, but less research is done on these crops as major crops. The aim of this study is to examine soil properties under different mulches and bio-fertilizers in soybean NS Kaća and buckwheat Novosadska. The experiment was set up in semiarid conditions in the Center for organic production in Selenča with 3 types of mulches: wood chips, straw, living mulch as well as commercial fertilizers and soil enhancers: organic NPK fertilizer, Ascophyllum nodosum extract and microbiological stimulator. Mulches were helpful in maintaining the physical properties of soil, but they could not preserve the chemical properties of soil. Buckwheat manifested better chemical and physical soil properties compared to soybean. Our results showed differences regarding mulch application in terms of impact on soil, which could serve as a basis for improving the management of buckwheat and soybean under organic production systems in semiarid conditions.

AB - The effect of the additive intercropping system, on weediness of maize and soybean was investigated on chernozem soil type in 2004 and 2005. Intercropping was done in alternate rows and in strips. Three maize hybrids of different FAO maturity groups (FAO 500, 600 and 700) were included into the trials. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different maize hybrids and spatial distribution intercrop patterns on the weediness of maize and soybean. The maize and soybean intercropping resulted in the decrease in parameters of weediness, especially in the number of perennial weed species and fresh biomass per area unit. The intercropping system in alternate rows expressed greater efficiency in weed control (number of species, number of plants per species and weed biomass) in comparison to the intercropping system in strips and maize monocrops. In soybean, intercropping systems were more advantageous than soybean monocrops.
