AB - In order to investigate the possibility of onion production from seed in conditions without irrigation under the ecological conditions of Vojvodina the study was conducted at Rimski Šančevi experiment field of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops on the calcareous chernozem soil of the loess terrace. Potential evapotranspiration (ETP) of onion during growing season were calculated using the procedure of water balance, and bioclimatic method using hydrophytothermic index (K), the value of which had been estimated at 0.19 for onion in the climate of Vojvodina. After determining the ETP value, the actual evapotranspiration (ETR) was calculated on the basis of precipitation data and pre-vegetation soil water reserve. These values were then used to calculate the readily available soil water deficit during the onion growing season. In the study period the consumption of water on the ETP and ETR ranged from 446-495 mm and 249-417 mm respectively. Deficit of readily available water in the soil was 78 mm, 114 mm and 197 mm in 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively. Determined deficit of readily available water in the soil was negatively affect all tested parameters (bulb yield r = -0.847**, bulb weight r = - 0.760**, bulb diameter r = - 0.712**, bulb height r = - 0.547*, plant height r = -0.864**). Based on the results, it can be concluded that the production of onions from seed in varying climatic conditions of Vojvodina is possible only under irrigation conditions.

AB - In the agroclimatic conditions of the Vojvodina Province, the application of an economic water regime and modern technology is necessary for stable and intensive potato production. A two-year experiment on calcareous chernozem was carried out to determine how irrigation and different pre-irrigation soil moisture affect potato yield and distribution of tuber fraction in the potato yield. The block-design trial had four replicates and was adapted for sprinkler irrigation conditions. It included four treatments: irrigation with pre-irrigation moisture levels of 60 % of field water capacity (FC), irrigation with pre-irrigation moisture levels of 70 % (FC), irrigation with pre-irrigation moisture levels of 80% (FC), and a non-irrigated control treatment. Irrigation significantly increased the yield of potato, which increased from 37.27 % to 75.86 %. Under irrigation, the percentage of small fractions decreased in favour of the 55 mm one, or fractions above the 45-55 mm range. On average, irrigated treatments produced significantly more tubers than the conditions of natural water supply.
AB - U agroekološkim uslovima Vojvodine, navodnjavanje uz primenu racionalnog zalivnog režima i savremene tehnologije predstavlja neophodnost za intenzivnu i stabilnu proizvodnju krompira.

AB - Cabbage is harvested when heads become firm and mature. Delay in harvest for several days, past the point of technological maturity, may lead to head cracking and occurrence of diseases. Only well-formed and tightly packed heads are harvested. Cabbage is harvested once or two times, at the stage of full technological maturity. Cabbage heads can be picked by hand, or the harvest is semi-mechanized or fully mechanized. Plants with incompletely packed head at the time of the last harvest significantly reduce yield performance. A breeding objective is to obtain plants that manage to pack their heads in shortest possible time, which enables mechanized harvest. Careful harvest is the main prerequisite for a good and long storage of cabbage heads. .

The trial had four replicates and was set up according to a block design adapted for sprinkler irrigation conditions. It included treatments with pre-irrigation moisture levels of 60%, 70% and 80% of field water capacity (FC) and a nonirrigated control treatment. On average, irrigation brings about highly significant increases (12.5-78.90%) in biological potato yield relative to natural moisture conditions. In the present study, a significant correlation was observed between biological yield and market yield in both study years. Depending on pre-irrigation moisture, the weight of potato vine increased with increasing number of days since planting, on average, peaked between the 105th and 110th day, and then began to decrease.

AB - A three-year experimental research was conducted in fields of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, at Rimski Šančevi. The field trials were carried out with the hybrid NS-6010 grown at five densities (50,000-90,000 plants ha-1). Sprinkler irrigation was applied at pre-watering soil moisture of 60%, 70% and 80% of the field water capacity (FWC). The control plot without irrigation was also included. The maize yield increase by irrigation was highly significant in 2004 and 2006, while the irrigation effect lacked in very rainy 2005. The increase of pre-watering soil moisture did not increase the maize yield, there was even a tendency of a small decrease. The highest yields were achieved at the density of 60,000 and 70,000 plants per hectare. The maize evapotranspiration under irrigated conditions was at the same level regardless of the pre-watering soil moisture. It ranges from 540 mm to 600 mm depending on year conditions. The evapotranspiration was smaller in non-irrigated control, except in rainy 2005 when it was at the same level as in the irrigated variant.

AB - Pepper requirement for water, i.e., water consumption for evapotranspiration has been assessed in a field trial in which sprinkling irrigation was applied at 80% of field water capacity (FWC). Evapotranspiration was determined by balancing the consumptions of water from soil reserve, rainfall and irrigation. Soil moisture was measured by the thermogravimetric method by drying 10 cm samples to the depth of 60 cm in at 105-110°C at 7-day intervals. Water consumption for pepper evapotranspiration in the period from transplanting to the last harvest was 571-667 mm (Table 3). Monthly evapotranspirations were 45-51 mm in the last 10 days of May, 128-145 mm in June, 161-181 mm in July and August and 74-114 mm in September, the actual rates varying with year. Average daily evapotranspiration rates were 3.2 mm in the last 10 days of May, 4.8 mm in June, 5.5 mm in July and August and 3-2 mm in September. A maximum daily rate, determined on the basis of a difference between two measurements, was 8 mm. Irrigation interval was determined on the basis of average daily water consumption, water-physical soil properties (water capacity) and irrigation rate. It was concluded that under the local conditions, irrigation interval has to be modified in order to take into account the amounts and distribution of rainfall. Potential evapotranspiration of peppers was assessed in a varietal trial, which included 14 pepper varieties. Their yields varied from 25.89 to 39.35 t-ha-1 (Table 2). When grown under the conditions of soil moisture above 80% FWC the varieties exhibited high variability in yield performance.

AB - In the climatic conditions of the Vojvodina Province drought is a regular phenomenon. It occurs every year and lasts shorter or longer period significantlyinfluences the reduction of plants yield. In those conditions irrigation is a big advantage in food production. The aim of irrigation is not only to eliminate the deficit of water, but to contribute the more intensive agriculture production as well. Inaddition of great advantages, the use of water in irrigation process may also give some undesirable results on the soil properties. Considering the fact that, the experiments of irrigation influence on yield of cultivated plants have been carried out at theInstitute of Field and Vegetable Crops for more than twenty years, the aim of this investigation was to determine the influence of irrigation on properties of chernozem soil. In the paper, the results of the comparative investigation on the properties of soilchernozem in conditions with and without irrigation were presented. The basic chemical soil properties adsorptive complex, mechanical composition, the content of salts in the soil, the quality of irrigated water were investigated. On the basis of theinvestigated results there were not found out any significantly influence of irrigation on the change of properties of the soil chernozem.
