AB - The sustainable production of agricultural commodities, such as vegetable proteins and oils, is currently facing the challenge of developing new cropping strategies more e fficient in terms of water, nutrients, and land, while being able to increase the supply of domestic feedstocks. Double cropping of camelina (Camelina sativa L.), sown in the autumn, with sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) can be proposed as a sustainable way to produce in the same growing season and land, multiple feedstocks for both energy, feed and food uses. A preliminary trial was conducted in Novi Sad (Serbia) during the 2018/19 growing season to test: yield performance, oil content and 1000 seed mass of two early sunflower hybrids (NS Dukat and NS H 7749) sown just after the harvest of two camelina varieties (NS Slatka and NS Zlatka which average yield was 920 kg/ha). Sunflower hybrids were also grown in the monocropping system as control. Both sunflower hybrids had higher seed yields in the monocropping system (+24%), but when considering the total yield of the two crops in the double cropping seed yield resulted slightly higher (+1-3%) than that of sunflower in the monocropping system. Although the average oil content and oil yield of sunflower was 6% and 27% higher in the monocropping system, respectively, the high nutritional value of camelina’s oil, which is rich in omega-3, should be also carefully evaluated.

AB - Sunflower breeding is a continuous process designed to increase yield levels and improve resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Breeders have been successful in producing a large number of varieties using conventional breeding methods that vary by species. The emergence of new techniques, such as genomic selection and genome editing, together with efficient phenotyping platforms, have paved the way for more efficient introduction of desirable traits. New approaches in genotyping and phenotyping have enabled more efficient data collection to identify quantitative traits and explain the genetic basis of agronomically important traits. The creation of sunflower genotypes resistant to climate change can contribute to mitigating the negative impact that agricultural production has on the environment, such as intensive water depletion and greenhouse gas emissions, while on the other hand providing resources for stable agricultural production. The paper provides an overview of new approaches and steps in sunflower breeding and the creation of genotypes tolerant to climate changes, with a review of the activities at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops related to their application in the NS breeding program.

AB - One of the goals of the ECOBREED work package SOYBEAN was to develop soybean genotypes with improved agronomic performance and to offer know-how for cultivation practices tailor-made for low input and organic systems. During the project lifetime, the focus of activities was on henotyping for biotic (weed, pest, diseases) and abiotic (drought and chilling stress) stress tolerance screening, as well as crop and nutritive quality and N fixation efficiency. A marker-assisted selection programme was established to identify genes/QTL of particular importance for organic soybean varieties. In addition, an assessment of the effects of cover crops and inoculation in the process of soybean seed multiplication was performed. Creating and selecting new soybean lines suitable for organic production was a key priority. After the first half of the project and the conduction of different trials and identification of useful traits, cross composite populations (CCPs) and soybean lines were available for further field testing. Chosen soybean lines went through the registration trials (2021-2022) to evaluate their performance and adaptability. The first ECOBREED soybean variety was registered by IFVCNS. NS ECOB is the variety with high protein content (00 maturity group) specifically selected for organic and low input production requirements.

AB - This is the first part of an environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) study of oilseed rape cultivated under conditions prevalent in the region of Vojvodina, Serbia. The paper presents the initial two phases of the LCA: goal and scope definition, as well as the life cycle inventory (LCI). The assessment exclusively focuses on the rapeseed oil production chain, which includes the transportation of oilseeds to regional silos as its final stage. The assessment of production inputs, including quantities of mineral fertilizers, pesticides, and diesel fuel needed to achieve an assumed yield of 3000 kg ha-1, relies on recommendations from relevant agricultural advisory institutions. Emissions of pollutants into the environment, considered as outputs, are calculated using methodologies that account for locally specific conditions and production practices. Collected or estimated input and output data are entered into the OpenLCA software, which, in conjunction with the ecoinvent 3.7 database, computes the results of the LCI analysis. The LCI result contains data on hundreds of different pollutants emitted into the environment during the processes that make up the oilseed rape production chain, as well as a detailed inventory of consumed or used natural resources. However, LCI results only provide data on the quantities of different exchanges with the environment, not their potential impacts. Thus, they are not suitable for concluding the overall impact of oilseed rape production on the environment. Consequently, the analysis requires supplementation through the third LCA phase: the life cycle impact assessment (LCIA). This phase provides further explanations and interpretations of the significance of inventory results from an environmental protection perspective.

AB - Genetic potential of rapeseed for reaching high seed and oil yield can be jeopardized by multiple environmental factors that shape rapeseed performance and stability at different growing sites. A combination of high temperatures and drought during sowing make the germination and initial plant growth critical phases for successful rapeseed production in Serbia. Thousand seed weight is related to seed size, which affects seeding rate as well as speed of germination and emergence and is important to achieve high yield potential. The goal of this study was to study changes in thousand seed weight of rapeseed in response to different environments. Furthermore, we sought to determine genotypes that had high and stable thousand seed weight values. Additional goal was to implement additive main effects and multiplicative interaction model (AMMI) to partition genotype × environment interactions.

AB - With the aim of optimizing the buckwheat assortment for the region of Serbia, field trials with 161 accessions of Fagopyrum sp. were set up in Backi Petrovac (45° 20' 12" N, 19° 40' 12" E) during 2023. In addition to 148 F. esculentum var. esculentum accessions, the phenotypic characterization of 30 ‘agromorphological characteristics also includes 7 var. emarginatum as well as 4 F. tataricum, 1. dibotrys and 1 F. ocutatum. Characterization of properties was carried out according to ECPGR Descriptors for buckwheat. The experiment, which was set up on May 10, was marked by extreme conditions that included high rainfall at the end of May, high temperatures at the end of June, storm at the end of July and high temperatures at the beginning of August. Such extreme conditions allowed test collection for tolerance to high temperatures and lodging. Within the analyzed collection, significant phenotypic variability was noted for all selected traits. Some of the traits were strongly affected by the extreme conditions such as high temperatures of over 40 °C during the generative phase of plant development which completely destroyed all accessions except F. esculentum, from which 26 were also significantly damaged. Additionally, a large part of the collection (93 accessions) showed a pronounced sensitivity to lodging and as such are not suitable for mechanized harvesting. Nineteen accessions showed partial lodging and they could be used with partial yield reduction.

AB - Abundance of Halyomorpha halys (Stål), the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), and Nezara viridula (L.), the southern green stink bug (SGSB), after their introduction on the territory of Europe, has been constantly increasing. In order to assess potential damage, a set of trials was conducted in semi‐controlled, field conditions in isolation cages, 1 m in diameter and 1.8 m in height, during 2020 and 2021. Testing was done on five different soybean varieties that belong to 00‐III maturity groups (Fortuna, Romansa, Princeza, Sava and Senka). There were three types of treatments/cages, a control treatment without stink bugs (C), a treatment with BMSB specimens and a third treatment with SGSB specimens. In each isolation cage with stink bugs five specimens per plant were introduced. The results showed significant effects of stink bugs feeding on soybean plants. In 2020 the number of seeds per plant, average for all five varieties, was the highest in the C (118.9) while BMSB and SGSB treatments were with much less seeds (10.7 and 6.5 respectively).

Sadržaj ulja u semenu iznosi 40-48% (Marjanović Jeromela i Prodanović, 2021), a u našim uslovima proizvodnje 41,5-46,9% (Rajković i sar., 2022).

AB - The creation of focused breeding programs for organic farming systems was encouraged by the expanding market for organic farming. Breeding efforts are being stimulated by the rising demand for soybean varieties that are appropriate for organic farming in order to better meet the unique needs of those involved in the organic value chain. Within the ECOBREED project, extensive phenotyping on 200 soybean genotypes is carried out across contrasting environments in three countries, i.e. Austria, Romania and Serbia, which will enable the identification of useful traits (variation) and the level of local adaptation of genotypes. The following traits are assessed: yield and yield supportive traits, crop growth related traits, grain quality traits, plant architecture. Multi-trait genotype-ideotype distance index (MGIDI) implemented for genotypes selection, based on multiple traits. Classical linear multi-trait selection indices are available, but multi-collinearity and arbitrary weighting coefficient selection may erode genetic gains while.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the effect of insecticides Talstar 10 EC (pyrethroid bifenthrin) and Nurelle D (mixture of organophosphorus and pyrethroid: chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin) on the life-cycle parameters (survival, growth, cocoons production, and hatching juveniles) of the non-target organism, earthworm Eisenia fetida (Savigny, 1826), in the laboratory and their impact on the natural earthworm population in agricultural field. The experiment was conducted from 2017 to 2019. The field experiment was performed at the Rimski Šančevi site, near Novi Sad, Serbia. The laboratory experiment was conducted according to the OECD guidelines. The earthworms were exposed to the artificial soil supplemented with different concentrations of the tested insecticides according to the recommended agricultural doses (RAD). The mixture of pesticides (Nurelle D) was found ecologically more dangerous to E. fetida than Talstar 10 EC. The 50% lethal concentration (LC50) values of both insecticides were higher than the highest concentration used in the experiment. Talstar 10 EC did not affect weight, but affected the production of cocoons and hatching juveniles, even at the RAD. The mixture of pesticides has shown toxicity after a long-time exposure, and it had an impact on the parameters of the life cycle. The results of the field experiment demonstrated that mixtures of pesticides are more toxic than single-component ones. This points out that the chemicals must be used with the maximum responsibility. Information about long-term effects can be important for understanding the field experiment data, which typically show a high variability and, therefore, are difficult to interpret.

AB - Plant viruses, and aphids as their vectors, are limiting factors in sugar beet production. Viral plant diseases are currently impossible to treat, but knowing the flight patterns of aphids can help reduce the number of potential virus vectors. Monitoring of aphid flight activities in sugar beet fields was done using yellow water traps from April to the end of November. During the two years of investigation, a total of 5 514 specimens from 75 different taxa were collected. All localities recorded the highest number of individuals at the end of May/beginning of June. This is the period when sugar beet develops intensively, so the risk of virus infection is the highest. The most numerous species were Aphis fabae Scopoli, Aphis spiraecola Patch., Phyllaphis fagi (L.), Myzus persicae (Sulzer), Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), Sitobion avenae (Fabr.), Acyrthosiphon pisum (Haris) and Therioaphis trifolii (Monell). The most important vectors are A. fabae, A. spiraecola and M. persicae. Aphis fabae is a species that feeds on sugar beet and causes significant damage by feeding and its vector activity. Myzus persicae was the most abundant in autumn, A. spiraecola was present throughout the whole flight-monitoring period. Among the caught aphids, twelve species alien to Europe were collected.

AB - The location of cultivation, with its soil and climate specificities, has a significant impact on the chemical composition of plants. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of locality on the content of fatty acids in safflower oil. Genotype SO1 achieved the highest content of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, on average for all investigated localities. The highest content of arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic and behenic acids was recorded for the genotype SO2, on average for all investigated localities. The highest MUFA content was observed at the Sombor location, while the highest SFA content was achieved at the Rimski šančevi location, and the highest PUFA content in safflower oil was recorded at the Pančevo location.

AB - Climate change, manifested in increasingly warmer weather conditions, prolonged drought periods and changed precipitation amount and patterns, has been identified as a changing force in agriculture production. Extreme weather events have a major impact on crops, but also on agricultural pests. Specifically, drought conditions enable pests to thrive and make higher damages due to altered bionomy but also increased susceptibility of host plants. Wireworms are most devastating soil-dwelling pests of a number of crop species, and according to the predictions, they are likely to become a bigger problem under the conditions of climate change. This work aimed to monitor the occurrence and activity of wireworms in sunflower, depending on the environmental conditions, precipitation patterns in particular, and plant growth stage. Wireworm presence was monitored in a three-year period, 2018, 2019 and 2021, on an untreated sunflower field. Wireworm presence and activity was deduced based on damaged plants (%), field emergence (%) and plant density (number of plants per 10 m out of 40 sown seeds), observed at two phenophases (one and three to four pair of leaves).

AB - Recent EU regulations aim at reducing the use of synthetic pesticides in agriculture. In sunflower production systems in Serbia, the use of insecticides as soil and seed treatments was predominant practice of wireworm (Coleoptera: Elateridae) control. However, a number of compounds that were effi ciently used as seed treatments are banned (neonicotinoids and carbofuran in 2014, bifenthrin in 2018), which imposes a need for novel approach in wireworm management. One of the promising alternatives is the use of entomopathogenic fungi (EPFs) as environmentally favorable microbiological agents. This work aimed at assessing the potential of an “Attract & Kill” strategy for controlling wireworms in sunflower in comparison with conventional insecticides. This strategy involved the use of the product “ATTRACAP®”, capsules containing the EPF Metarhizium brunneum and CO2 as attractant. The experiment was set in 2018, at Rimski šančevi (Novi Sad, Serbia), as a randomized block design with a) soil treatments with ATTRACAP® and tefluthrin based insecticide; b) seed treatments with thiacloprid, bifenthrin, tefluthrin and flupyradifurone based insecticides
and c) the control (untreated seeds).

AB - Several winter and spring alternative crops are grown in our country. Similar to the yield of staple field crops, the yield of minor cultivated crops is affected by complex climate-soil interactions, abiotic and biotic stress and cultivation technology. If grown solely for the production of plant raw materials (aboveground biomass, grain and/or root) for conversion into biofuels and bioenergy, the alternative crops are energy - crops. Although they have different botanical affiliations, morphologies and origins, energy - crops can be: oilseeds (oil rapeseed, camelina, white mustard, castor), starch-sugar (sorghum, Sudanese grass, corn) and lignocellulosic (miscanthus, hemp). From the point of view of agronomy, the prerequisite for increasing the area under energy - plant species for the production of biofuels in Serbia is the improvement of assortment, cultivation technology and mechanization. The paper provides an overview of agronomic forms and cultivation technology of several specific alternative plant species in the context of using crop biomass for energy purposes.

Although the average oil content and oil yield of sunflower was 6% and 27% higher in the monocropping system, respectively, the high nutritional value of camelina’s oil, which is rich
in omega-3, should be also carefully evaluated.
