AB - In this study, supercritical carbon dioxide was applied for the extraction of Artemisia annua L. Moreover, the impact of different parameters of supercritical extraction on total yield was investigated and the obtained yields were compared to the ones obtained by conventional procedures, hydrodistillation and Soxhlet extraction. Supercritical fluid extraction at 40 °C and different pressures (100, 200, and 300 bar) resulted in extraction yields that were in the 2.23-5.18 % range, while the yields at 60 °C and the same pressures were in the range 2.43-3.35 %. The yields obtained by the Soxhlet extraction and hydrodistillation were 10.28 % and 0.10 %, respectively. Although supercritical fluid extraction is inferior to Soxhlet extraction in terms of the recovery of lipophilic components of A. annua, the Soxhlet extraction is not the method of choice for obtaining sweet wormwood extracts due to its numerous disadvantages that include the use of toxic solvents, extended extraction time, health safety of the product, the need for further processing, the impossibility of adjusting the selectivity and thus the composition of the product.

AB - In this study, water and various concentrations of ethanol in water (30 %, 50 %, 70 %, and 90 %) were used as a solvent in the extraction of two different samples of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.). The extraction yield, total phenols content, total flavonoids content, antioxidant activity, and reductive capacity were determined in the obtained extracts. The extraction yield was from 8.16 to 19.56 %, the content of total phenols was in the range from 5.85 to 17.05 mg GAE/g dw, and content of total flavonoids was in the range from 5.85 to 9.25 mg CE/g dw. Antioxidant activity was tested by DPPH assay and EC50 values were from 0.1331 to 0.7563 mg/mL, while EC50 values obtained by reducing power test ranged from 0.4450 to 1.1980 mg/mL. Ethanol/water mixture (50 %) was determined to be the best solvent for the extraction of phenolic compounds from both hemp samples. Total phenols content in 50 % ethanolic extracts were 17.05 mg/g dw and 9.25 mg/g dw for young and mature hemp, respectively.

AB - Aronia, also called chokeberry, is a member of the Rosaceae family. The genus is usually considered to contain two species: black chokeberry, Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Ell., and red chokeberry, Aronia arbutifolia (L.) Pers. (Kokotkiewicz et al., 2010; Kulling and Rawel, 2008). Black. A. melanocarpa (Michx.) Ell. is more prevalent. It is spread across North America, Europe, Russia and Ukraine, where it is a common mass-produced plant. It grows in a form of a shrub 2–3 m tall, and can live up to 20 years. Ripening phase of aronia starts in late July, and harvest is performed between August and September. The first harvest can be done after three years, whereas the full yield of 5-10 kg fruit per shrub or 5-12 t/ha, can be expected in about five years once plants have matured. A series of factors, such as habitat/location, harvest date, cultivar, fertilization, and maturation of the berries can affect the content of aronia phytochemicals.
