AB - Understanding the mechanism of dry matter and nitrogen partitioning and its translocation from different plant parts during post-anthesis period on different sowing dates may contribute to further improvement of winter barley productions in the Pannonian Plain. Therefore, a field trial with six two-rowed winter barley cultivars grown on four different sowing dates in two growing seasons was conducted to determine dry matter and nitrogen partitioning in different plant parts, and further role of their translocation in grain yield and nitrogen yield determination. Higher dry matter and nitrogen accumulation on early sowing dates were followed by higher translocation in developing grain. Contribution of pre-anthesis dry matter translocation to grain yield varied from 34.8 to 48.5% among cultivars and 38.44 to 45.0% among different sowing dates. Furthermore, the pre-anthesis reserved N contributed from 53.2% (NS 557) to 66.2% (NS 551) among cultivars, and from 50.7% (early optimal sowing date) to 66.3% (extreme late sowing date) across sowing dates. In order to achieve and maintain high yielding barley production in the Pannonian Plain, barley growers and breeders should focus more on the medium early barley genotypes, such as NS Pinon, with increased dry matter and nitrogen accumulation during pre-anthesis adapted to early sowing.

AB - Landraces of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum), were the main
cereals of Montenegro until the mid-20th century, where they were
collectively recognized as Rogosija. After the Second World War, the
introduction of high-yielding common wheat cultivars threatened the
survival of Rogosija landraces, that were almost extinct in farmers’
fields. Starting from 1955, sampling of durum wheat accessions in
Montenegrin regions allowed the conservation of a Rogosija durum collection
in the Montenegro Plant Gene Bank. This assortment represents an unexplored
durum wheat germplasm that can be analyzed for the identification of
valuable alleles, useful to increase the wheat crop adaptability to climate
change. Aims of this study were: i) to estimate the genetic diversity andpopulation structure of the Rogosija collection using SNP markers; ii) to
investigate correlation between genetic clusters and the Montenegro ecogeographic conditions. The collection was analyzed with a high-throughput
genotyping system based on the 25K Illumina SNP wheat array. A total of
6,915 high-quality SNPs were retained and mapped on the durum genome.
Principal components and phylogenetic analyses discriminated two different
genetic durum clusters. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that 16% of
the total variation was due to differences among the genetic clusters,
whereas the remaining variance occurred within clusters. To estimate
whether the genetic clusters detected are related to Montenegrin ecogeographic regions, the durum accessions were geo-referenced and evaluated
according to ecological data of the collecting sites. Interestingly, one
genetic cluster included samples located around Lake Skadar, while the
second genetic cluster comprised accession sampled in the Montenegrin
littoral coast. This result suggests that the Rogosija durum collection
stored in the Montenegro Plant Gene Bank enclosed two Rogosija durum
populations, evolved in two different eco-geographic micro-areas.

AB - Durum wheat landraces represent a genetic resource for the identification and isolation of new valuable genes and alleles, useful to increase the crop adaptability to climate change. Several durum wheat landraces, all denominated “Rogosija”, were extensively cultivated in the Western Balkan Peninsula until the first half of the 20th century. Within the conservation program of the Montenegro Plant Gene Bank, these landraces were collected, but without being characterized. The main goal of this study was to estimate the genetic diversity of the “Rogosija collection” consisting of 89 durum accessions, using 17 morphological descriptors and the 25K Illumina single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. The genetic structure analysis of the Rogosija collection showed two distinguished clusters localized in two different Montenegro eco-geographic micro-areas, characterized by continental Mediterranean climate and maritime Mediterranean climate. Data suggest that these clusters could be composed of two different Balkan durum landrace collections evolved in two different eco-geographic micro-areas. Moreover, the origin of Balkan durum landraces is discussed.

U ovoj studiji su ispitivani prinosi sorti: prosa (Biserka i Rumenka), heljde (Novosadska), sirka za zrno (Alba i Gold), sirka metlaša (Prima i Reform), konoplje (Helena i Marina), facelije (NS Priora), uljanog lana (NS Primus i NS Marko) i uljane tikve (Olivija i Olinka).
AB - Agricultural production is largely conditioned by climatic factors. The scenario of global climate change predicts that the coming years will be dry, with a warmer climate, which will have a negative impact on the yield of agricultural plants. Alternative plant species-APS, thanks to their tolerance to drought and high temperatures, have a perspective in the structure of agricultural production. In order to obtain a high and stable seed yield of alternative plant species, it is necessary, in addition to high-quality certified seed, to apply appropriate varieties cultivation technology, adapted to the requirements of individual varieties, the climatic conditions of the cultivation locality and the characteristics of the soil. In this study, the yields of varieties were examined: millet (Biserka and Rumenka), buckwheat (Novosadska), grain sorghum (Alba and Gold), broom sorghum (Prima and Reform), hemp (Helena and Marina), phacelia (NS Priora), oil flax (NS Primus and NS Marko) and oil pumpkin (Olivija and Olinka). The achieved average yields of APS in 2022 were at the level of the multi-year average. High temperatures and lack of precipitation in the critical stages of plant growth caused average and slightly lower yields. Large yield fluctuations are also evident, depending on the applied agrotechnical measures during the growing season: sowing time and irrigation.

AB - Tetraploid wheat has been the most important cereal in Montenegro until the green revolution and
the introduction of elite common wheat cultivars. Realizing the risk of losing these populations,
at the Agricultural institute in Podgorica activities on the collection and conservation of these
populations were initiated. The entire population of tetraploid wheat of 89 samples is today
stored in the plant gene gene bank of Montenegro. In order to assess the diversity of these
populations, an assessment using UPOV morphological markers was performed in 2020. Five
monogenetic traits were included in the analysis: type of plant growth, time of ear emergence
(major genes controlling this trait are photoperiod sensitivity - ppd genes), ear glaucosity, plant
height (major genes controlling plant height are reduced height - rht genes), the length of
the ears without awns, the presence of awns and the seasonal type of plants (major genes
vernalization - vrn). Multiple correspondence analyses showed that there were no signicant
dierences between these populations. Moreover, dimensions one and two explained only
9.6 and 7.8%, of the total variation, respectively, which indicates the common origin of the
population.

AB - Wheat yield has continuously been increasing over the last century, as a result of improvement in crop production technology and breeding progress. However, annual genetic gains in cereals are between 0.5–1.0 percent, showing stagnation in many regions across the world. In or-der to increase grain yield genetic progress, different strategies based on genomics data or physiological traits have to be integrated in breeding activities. Physiological approach in conventional wheat breeding is based on the crosses of parents with desirable complex physiological traits, and progeny selection according to important physiological traits. During the past ten years, different physiological strategies have been applied in regular breeding activities at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia. First of all, small grains gene bank at the Institute has been screened according to different physiological traits, such as NDVI values, infrared temperature and chlorophyll index. Some physiological analysis, such as chlorophyll fluorescence or stomatal conductance, have been identified as labour and time consuming, restricting their application in regular breeding activities at the Institute. Further-more, each growing season several crosses of parents bearing desirable complementary physiological traits are made and progenies with increased NDVI and chlorophyll index are selected. Currently, several new wheat “physiological” lines have been included in preliminary multilocation testing, with high chance to be released as potential new cultivars to the market during the next two or three years. Further integration of physiological breeding with high throughput phenotyping and genomic selection could be promising strategies for additional small grains yield improvement.

AB - Phenology of small cereals as a complex trait, which provides matching plant development with growing conditions, is important factor that influence plant adaptation to particular environment and finally yield. Scales of growth based on plant phenology and scales of development based on apical morphology are very precise, but relationships between them are not always clear. Some morphogenetic features of cereals growth can be predicted on the basis of leaf appearance. That means shoot apex development is coordinated with leaf appearance and total number of formed leaves. The objective of this research was to study relationships among apical development and plant phenology and the variability in phenological development of diverse winter barley cultivars under field conditions. The twelve barley cultivars differed in origin, pedigree and agronomic traits were used in this study over six growing seasons at the Novi Sad location (45o20’N, 15o51’E, altitude 86 m) and under rainfed conditions.

AB - The objectives of this study were to quantify the grain yield breeding progress and identify the changes in numerical yield components and grain filling traits of six-rowed winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars under different nitrogen (N) fertilization treatments: 0 kg ha(-1) N (0N, control) and 100 kg ha(-1) N (100N). Field trials were conducted during two (2015-2016 and 2016-2017) growing seasons in a southern Pannonian location, Novi Sad, Serbia with fifteen six-rowed winter barley cultivars. The rate of genetic gain in grain yield was 0.055 t ha(-1) yr(-1) at 0N, while at 100N genetic gain was 0.061 t ha(-1) yr(-1), indicating that modern winter barley cultivars use the applied N fertilizer more efficiently than older cultivars. Grain yield progress was mainly associated with increased grain number per unit area, grain number per spike, grain weight and harvest index. A positive linear correlation was determined between fruiting efficiency and the year of cultivar release, while changes in spike dry weight at anthesis as influenced by the year of cultivar release were not significant. Breeding progress in grain weight was more related with grain filling and maximum grain filling rate, while grain weight association with grain filling duration was less pronounced. Therefore, further grain yield improvement in six-rowed winter barley should be achieved by simultaneous increase in grain weight and grain number per spike, while maintaining high values of harvest index.

AB - Leaf emergence represents externally visible trait that is results of externally not
visible leaf primordial initiation. Final leaf number initiated in the apex and the rate
of leaf emergence determine of pre-anthesis phases. The aim of this study was to
determine the effect of year and cultivars on final leaf number (FLN) in winter
barley. In the present study no consistent differences were found in the FLN
between 6-rowed and 2- rowed cultivars. FLN differs among barley varieties sown
in the field at different years and was controlled by all three factors; cultivar, year
and their interaction. Contribution of year in FLN variation was highest, about
74%. This can be explained as a direct effect of the year on the rate of leaf
appearance or as an indirect effect of an ontogenetic decline in the rate of
appearance. Low value of interaction showed stability of leaf number from year to
year. Considered across the growing seasons (GSs), the early cultivar Novosadski
581 had the lowest (11.3) and the late cultivar Kredit the highest (14.7) FLN. In
average the early cultivars had one leaf less than the late ones. Earliness is rather
the result of leaf number reduction than grain filling reduction.

AB - In order to optimize the lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) production in greenhouses and to evaluate how a usage of mulching and covering plants with woven agrotextile affects its yields, N content, nitrate, Zn and vitamin C in lettuce leaves, a 2-yr experiment was established. In the experiments, black and white plastic foils were used for mulching before planting, and woven agrotextile for plant covering after planting. The effect of each, as well as combination of them, on lettuce growth and productivity was evaluated. The experiment involved six treatments: control (without mulch), polyethylene black plastic mulch, polyethylene white plastic mulch, polyethylene black plastic mulch and woven agrotextile, polyethylene white plastic mulch and woven agrotextile, and woven agrotextile. In the first growing season the yield was 23% higher when polyethylene black plastic mulch was used compared to the control. In the second growing season the yield was 29% higher when polyethylene black plastic mulch was used compared to the control. Nitrogen content decreased 9% when the woven agrotextile was used compared to the control. Polyethylene black plastic mulch and polyethylene black plastic mulch with agrotextile reduced Zn content compared to the control. Vitamin C content increased 21% when woven agrotextile was used compared to the control. The overall effect of mulching and covering plants with woven agrotextile showed positive effect on lettuce production. The results obtained could assist lettuce growers in selecting most effective production technologies in order to achieve highest yield and nutritional value in this crop.

AB - In order to examine the influence of cultivars and to estimate how mulching and plant covering with agrotextile affects the content of P, Ca, K, Mg and Mn in lettuce leaves this three-year experiment has been established. In the experiment, black and white plastic foil were used for mulching prior to planting, and agrotextile for plant covering after planting. The effect of each of them as well as their combination on the content of nutrients and yield of lettuce leaves was examined. There were six treatments in the experiment: control, black foil, white foil, black foil and agrotextile, white foil and agrotextile, and agrotextile. Mulching had a significant impact on yield, as well as the content of P, Ca, K, Mg and Mn in lettuce leaves in the three-year experiment. The highest yield was registered in the cultivar Nizzi in treatment with black plastic foil, compared to all cultivars and treatments. The largest P content was registered in the cultivar Sunstar (0.71%), while the smallest content was registered in the cultivar Sunny (0.59%). The Ca content ranged from 2.59% (Sunny) to 2.84% (Nizzi). The Mg content ranged from 0.46% in treatment with black foil to 0.70% in treatment with white foil. The content of Mn in lettuce leaves ranged from 60.99 mg kg(-1) in the cultivar Zeralda to 81.79 mg kg(-1) in the cultivar Devonia.

AB - Information about dry matter accumulation is of great importance for further increase of barley yield. Various nonlinear and linear curves have been used to describe vegetative and reproductive growth for a number of agricultural crops. Although dry matter accumulation is an important parameter of crop growth, knowledge about biomass production under agro-ecological conditions of the Pannonian Plain are scarce. This study was undertaken to analyze the pattern of dry matter accumulation in two-rowed winter barley cultivars and changes in biological parameters of the logistic curve under different sowing dates and growing seasons. Therefore, trials with two late cultivars of two-rowed winter barley were conducted in two growing seasons and four sowing dates. Results from this study indicate that dry matter accumulation in both growing seasons followed a typical sigmoid shape. Delayed sowing led to a significant decrease in the maximum value of plant dry weight, the termal time needed to reach maximum value and duration of exponential growth, and increase in maximum crop growth rate. These results indicate that apart from appropriate cultivar selection, early barley sowing is also important to achieve high plant dry matters one of the main determinants of grain yield. .

AB - The aim of this study was to improve understanding of (1) the effect of genotypic and environmental factors on pre-anthesis development and leaf appearance traits of barley and wheat; (2) the relationship of these factors with grain yield, and (3) the differences between these two crops across different environments/sowing dates. Therefore, trials with six two-row winter barley and six winter wheat cultivars were carried out in two successive growing seasons on four sowing dates. Our study showed that the observed traits varied between species, cultivars and sowing dates. In both growing seasons, biomass at anthesis and grain yield declined almost linearly by delaying the sowing date. There was no clear advantage in grain yield of wheat over barley under conditions of later sowing dates. Generally, barley produced more leaf and had shorter phyllochron than wheat. Both wheat and barley showed a similar relationship between grain yield and different pre-anthesis traits.

AB - Dry matter accumulation is one of the best estimates for crop reaction to the effect of genotype or environmental factors. However, there is a lack of information about comparative crop growth between wheat and barley under conditions of the Pannonian climate. The objectives of this work were to study and compare the patterns of biomass accumulation in wheat and barley, and identify the role of the logistic curve parameters in the determination of the final biomass. Therefore, field trials with two two-row winter barley and two winter wheat cultivars were carried out in two successive growing seasons with four sowing dates. Results from our study showed that grain yield and crop biomass were under significant influence of cultivar and sowing date in both growing seasons. The highest grain yield and crop biomass at maturity were obtained with early sowing - first and second sowing date. There was a significant positive relationship between the crop biomass and grain yield in both species. Barley and wheat had similar strategies for biomass determination. Crop biomass at maturity was positively associated with the duration of growing phases, while the relationship with weighted mean absolute growth rate was negative. Early sowing enables prolongation in duration of different phases of crop biomass accumulation, leading to significant biomass and grain yield increase.
Međutim, nedostaju uporedni podaci o rastu pšenice i ječma u uslovima Panonske nizije. Cilj ovog istraživanja je bilo ispitivanje i poređenje akumulacije suve materije pšenice i ječma i utvrđivanja značaja parametara logističke krive u formiranju ukupne biomase. Rana setva omogućava produženje trajanja različitih faza akumulacije suve materije, dovodeći do značajnog povećanja prinosa i suve materije kod ječma i pšenice.

AB - Climate significantly affects cropping systems across Europe. Knowledge of the variability in grain number per unit area and grain weight across different growing seasons and its association with grain yield is important for further improving small grain crop production. The main aim of this study was to compare grain yield and its numerical components among triticale, wheat, two-rowed and six-rowed barley cultivars across different growing seasons in a typical Pannonian location (south-eastern part of Central Europe). Trials with twelve winter cereal genotypes (three two-rowed barley, three six-rowed barley, three wheat and three triticale genotypes) were carried out in four successive seasons in Novi Sad, Serbia. Results of this study showed that growing season, species, cultivar, and species x growing season interaction significantly (p lt 0.01) affected grain yield and its determinants. Generally, triticale had higher average grain yield, while the lowest grain yield was recorded in six-rowed barleys. Grain yield was more associated with the number of grains/m 2 than with grain weight. Heading date was recognized as one of the important adaptive traits in crop development and yield determination. Short duration of the pre-anthesis phase in early cultivars and delayed anthesis in late cultivars significantly decreased the number of grains/spike in different species/spike types, reducing the final grain yield. Medium early cultivars had the highest number of grains/spike due to optimal duration of the pre-anthesis period and heading date and are suggested as recommendable for large scale production in the Pannonian environments.

Medium early cultivars had the highest number of grains/spike due to optimal duration of the pre-anthesis period and heading date and are suggested as recommendable for large scale production in the Pannonian environments.",

AB - Knowledge about the comparative development and grain filling of winter cereals under different environmental conditions is important for stable and high yielding crop production. The objective of this work was to compare patterns of grain filling in bread wheat, barley and triticale grown in the Pannonian region, as well as to investigate relationships among grain filling parameters, time to anthesis and grain yield. The trials with 12 winter cereal genotypes were carried out in four successive seasons at the location Novi Sad, Serbia. Results of this study showed that all studied grain filling parameters were significantly influenced by species, cultivar, growing season, and species by growing season interaction. Longer duration of grain filling period and period to maximum grain filling were observed in triticale and wheat cultivars compared with six and two-rowed barley. Two-rowed barley cultivars had a higher grain filling rate than other cultivars. Furthermore, a negative association between time to anthesis and grain yield indicates that cultivars with the long pre-anthesis period are not recommended for the agro-ecological conditions of the Pannonian plain. Generally, medium early cultivars of small grain cereals had the highest grain weight within species and spike type, suggesting that medium early cultivars have a balanced ratio of pre-anthesis and grain filling period. High values of final grain weight in different growing seasons indicate that weather conditions in the Pannonian plain are mainly suitable for grain growth.

AB - Domestication, selection and modern breeding narrow the genetic variability of barley, and thus create the need for re-integration of variability as a basis for barley breeding. In this study, 4 barley cultivars and 48 landraces from Serbian gene bank were analysed during two years. Phenotypic variability and genetic structure of the two quantitative spike traits: length and width, and one trait of grain: 1000 grain weight, were analyzed in a population with genotypes of known type of vegetation and spike form. Average spike length ranged from 4,2 to 10,2 cm, spike width 0,65 to 1,27 cm and 1000 grain weight from 27,58 to 51,35 g. Analysis of variance has a significant F value for all sources of variation in all traits. Analysis with 16 SSR markers detected a total of 105 allelic forms. Observing the groups of vegetation type and spike form, diversity of genes was the highest in the spring barley (two-row and six-row forms) and six-row barley (spring and winter types). The results of AMOVA test for spike form showed highly significant values for both sources of variation, while the intergroup component was dominant both for the type of vegetation (91,26 %) and form of the spike (90,83 %). Based on the cluster dendrogram 52 genotypes are classified into three main groups and 11 sub-groups. The results showed there is considerable variability of examined traits in the collection, so it can be used in barley breeding programs.

AB - Salinity is one of the most important environmental stresses that limits soil fertility and has adverse effects on plant growth. In order to increase wheat production under saline conditions, it is necessary to better understand genotypic difference, the physiological and biochemical processes of salt tolerance in wheat. The aim of this study was to determine the most tolerant winter wheat varieties against salinity and osmotic stress at germination stage and early seedlings growth. The salinity and osmotic stress were simulated in controlled environmental conditions by adding different concentrations of NaCl and mannitol solution to the growing media of five winter wheat variety. In all studied varieties the benchmark water potential in which they had germinated and had a good seedlings growth was of -0.3MPa. Under the stronger stress, -0.6 MPa, all varieties showed reduction in the all examined parameters. The variety Bosanka, had the highest final germination and germination energy under both mannitol and salt stress treatments. The parameters defining the development or percentage of strong seeds, coleoptile and root length, fresh and dry weight of root and coleoptile of a seed were more affected by water deficit stress and salt stress than germination and germination energy. Biplot analysis showed that wheat cultivars grown under -0.6MPa osmotic had higher values of root/coleoptile ratio in relation to control and -0.3MPa treatment which is the most reliable for screening properties of the genotypes for drought resistance in seedling stage.

AB - The aim of this study was to identify desirable, and also non-informative or highly correlated locations using GGE biplot. In this study, ten barley genotypes were tested across five locations for two growing seasons in official state trials performed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia. In both growing seasons, environment had the highest influence on barley yield, explaining 77.70% in 2010/11 and 86.41% in 2011/12 growing season of the total variation. A significant grain yield variation explained by environmental effects indicated that the environments tested in our study were highly diverse. Together, PC1 and PC2 amounted 86.03% and 66.91 degrees 4) of the genotype and genotype x environment interaction sum of squares, in 2010/11 and 2011/12, respectively. The results indicate that Rimski sancevi was most favorable location and should be used for further multi-location trials while location Sremska Mitrovica was the least informative and it can be excluded from further trials. Excluding one of two similar environments could save resources with minimal risk to lose important information about genotypes performance. According to the results of our study, it can be concluded that GGE biplot is useful method for environment evaluation.

AB - Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is one of the most important forage legumes in areas with acidic and nutrient poorer soils where alfalfa fails to growth. In 2010-2011 years period we studied four advanced lines and four commercial varieties of red clover, which are widely used in the production in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our results showed that the variation in grain yield, thousand kernel weight and germination energy was under control of growth. Across genotypes seed yield in 2010 and 2011 was 205 and 223 kg ha(-1), respectively. The highest yield of seed was obtained from second growth in the second year. Extreme precipitation during anthesis and grain filling and ripening in 2010 negatively affected red clover seed production. Advanced line DS-2 had the highest grain yield (234 kg ha(-1)) and thousand kernel weight (1.75 g). Low seeds yields of the tested genotypes are questioning the cost-effectiveness of red clover seed production at this site.

abstract = "Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is one of the most important forage legumes in areas with acidic and nutrient poorer soils where alfalfa fails to growth.
