AB - As one of the most common medicinal plants, chamomile is grown on approximately 20,000 ha in the world and on 350 -400 ha in Serbia. Good yields can be expected if the plant is grown up to 500 m altitude. The plant is adapted to various soils; it has modest nitrogen demands and tolerates drought and salinity. The usual yields are: 500-1,000 kg/ha of dry flower heads, 150 kg/ha of seed and up to 4.5-5 kg/ha of essential oil. Drug (Chamomillae flos) has moisture below 12%, appropriate physico-chemical and microbiological properties, referred low amount of heavy metals and at least 4 ml/kg of essential oil. The yield of flower heads and the essential oil quantity and quality depend on various environmental factors, as well as on the genetic background. There is more than forty chamomile cultivars realized in the world; three of them originate from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (Banatska, Tip 29 and Tetraploidna). Banatska and Tetraploidna are widely grown. The cultivars are characterized by high yield potential and appropriate essential oil content.
Droga (Chamomillae flos) ima vlagu ispod 12%, odgovarajuće fizičko-hemijske i mikrobiološke osobine, propisano nizak sadržaj teških metala i najmanje 4 ml/kg etarskog ulja.

AB - The effects of weather conditions (precipitation and average daily air temperatures) during the 2014 vegetation period on the moisture of soil planted with pot marigold (Calendula officinalis L.), peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) under organic and conventional production system were analyzed. The analyses were carried out at the experimental fields of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad; Alternative Crops and Organic Production Department in Bački Petrovac. Except for May, the temperatures were higher than for the multi-year average, which contributed to the increased plant evapotranspiration. The frequent precipitation moderately satisfied plant water requirements during the vegetation period. Soil moisture in the rhizosphere zone was generally at sufficient level of water supply. However, in the mid June and during the July soil moisture was at the level which requires irrigation. In organic production, due to better plant development and higher water consumption, occasional lower humidity of the soil was registered, when irrigation would be desirable. Although the sum of precipitation was higher in 2014 compared to the multi-year average, the results confirmed the importance of proper distribution of precipitation in order to maintain normal plant growth and development.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the effects of management practices and biofertilization on microbial activity in rhizosphere and yield of medicinal and aromatic plants. Field experiment was performed using four plant species: peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.), pot marigold (Calendula officinalis L.), sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), and dill (Anethum graveolens L.). Treatments were arranged in a split-plot layout in four replicates using basic plots under conventional and organic management, and subplots with and without biofertilizer (Azotobacter chroococcum). Organic management positively affected the microbial number and activity. Biofertilization increased the total microbial number (13-21%), number of ammonifiers (13-60%), nitrogen-fixing bacteria (7-36%), actinomycetes (36-50%), fungi (60-100%), celluloly tic microorganisms (57-217%), dehydrogenase (28-52%) and beta-glucosidase activity (15-39%). The effects of management practices and biofertilization were highly significant for the yield of examined plants. The yields were higher on inoculated treatments both in conventional (5-26%) and organic (7-15%) growing system.

AB - Dill (Anethum graveolens L.) is a one-year herbaceous, spicy plant, which has aromatic smell and taste. One of its important ingredients is essential oil. The experiment showing the effect of irrigation on essential oil and biomass yield of dill was conducted in rainy 2016 and dry 2017 in two variants: control (without irrigation) and variant with irrigation. Favourable water balance of the soil was provided by applying drop-by-drop irrigation method. The average yield of fresh biomass was 8,252 kg ha-1 (10,194 kg ha-1 under irrigation and 6,310 kg ha-1 in control). Under irrigation, the yield of biomass was higher than the control variant by 78.59% in 2017 and 47.41% in 2016. Under irrigation, essential oil content and yield were higher than the control by 10.73% and 95.97% in 2017, respectively, and 3.93% and 54.06% in 2016, respectively.
AB - Irrigation improves the water regime of soil creating favorable conditions for growing plants. Frequent oscillations of weather conditions in the region, first of all the amount and distribution of precipitation, are the reason why irrigation is needed in plant production. The aim of the study was to detect the effect of irrigation on the yield and quality of marigold (Calendula officinalis L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). The experiments were conducted at the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops. Irrigation was scheduled on the basis of the water balance method. Daily evapotranspiration (ETd) was computed from the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and crop coefficient (kc) in May, June, July and August of 0.5, 0.6, 1.1 and 1.0, respectively. ETo was calculated using Hargreaves equation. The irrigation depth was restricted to the soil depth of 0.3 m. In other words, irrigation started when readily available water in the soil layer of 0.3 m was completely depleted by plants. The irrigation rate was 30 mm (30 l-1 m-2) while the amount of water added by irrigation during the season was 120 mm in 2016 and 300 mm in 2017. According to the results, the yield of fresh herb of all two plants under irrigation was higher compared to non-irrigated, control variant. As well essential oil and carotenoids, the main indicators of the quality of investigation plants were also affected by irrigation.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine weed flora occurring in an organic common mallow (Malva sylvestris L.), a newly established crop at the experimental field Bački Petrovac, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, during the growing season of 2014. The weed flora consisted of six species, with even a half being invasive for Vojvodina region (Sorghum halepense, Amaranthus retroflexus, Datura stramonium). The observed low floristic diversity may be related to unbalanced ecological conditions in a newly established crop, invasive species, comparatively low fertilization, allelopathic relations, and possibly robust habitus of the main crop. However, although the flora was low in diversity, both narrow and broadleaf species were represented, with the average infestation as high as 16 individuals per m2. In addition, since the recorded weeds flower from Mart to November, until the development of more efficient methods that are in compliance with the principles of organic agriculture, mechanical weeding should be performed at least three times during the growing season. To our knowledge, this is the first such report on organic common mallow in agro ecological conditions of Serbian province Vojvodina and represents the first step in establishing the adequate weed control measures.

AB - The biodiesel production from white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) seed oil (WMSO) by transesterification with methanol over the quicklime powder was investigated in a batch stirred reactor. Two independent first-order models with respect to triacylglycerols (TAGs) or a more complex model that combined the changing mechanism and the first-order rate law with respect to TAGs and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), respectively described successfully the kinetics of this transesterification reaction. Besides that, the response surface methodology coupled with a full factorial design with replication was applied to model and optimize esters content with methanol-to-WMSO molar ratio, catalyst amount and reaction time (X-1, X-2 and X-3, respectively). The analysis of variance indicated that all individual process factors, the interactions X-1-X-2 and X-2-X-3 and the quadratic term X2 2 influenced significantly FAME content at the 95% confidence level. According to the reduced quadratic model, complete conversion could be achieved with the catalyst loading of 9.8%-10% and the methanol-to-WMSO molar ratio in the range between 6.1:1 and 11.6:1 in 50 min. WMSO was transesterified even faster than sunflower oil in the presence of both quicklime and KOH, due to higher total content of unsaturated fatty acids.

AB - The aim of the present paper was to study the response of Oenothera biennis L. to 'Candidatus Phytoplasma solani' (Stolbur) infection by analyzing total sugars, polyphenols, photosynthetic pigments content and the antioxidant capacity in leaves and roots of healthy and infected plants. The infection caused a significant increase in peroxidation of lipids, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, total sugar, polyphenols and anthocyanins content (2.8, 2.6, 1.8, 1.4, 6.8 fold, respectively), as well as a decrease in photosynthetic pigments (2-6 fold) and total flavonoids (1.5 fold) in the leaves of Oe. biennis. Changes in these parameters were insignificant in the roots except for the total polyphenols content that was 2.7 times higher in the infected ones. Reduced gluthatione content in both tested organs was not affected by the infection (3.7 and 1.7 mu mol/g fresh weight of leaves and roots, respectively). The elevated content of total sugars, flavonoids and polyphenols, as well as the reduction of photosynthetic pigments and anthocyanins in infected plants are indicative of changes in the metabolism of Oe. biennis affected by the Stolbur phytoplasma. In addition to reduction of chlorophyll and carotenoids, the phytoplasma accelerated leaf senescence. Plants responded to the infection via enhanced superoxide anion scavenging, even though this reaction did not prevent, apparently, membrane damage in analysed leaves. This investigation presents new data on the effect of a phytoplasma infection on its host.

AB - The application of irrigation soil is regulated and improved its water regime, where by improving production traits and growing conditions of plants which are produced on them, because of that, and for mitigation increasing and more frequent oscillations of weather conditions during the production years. The trial was conducted in irrigation medicinal, aromatic and spice herbs, whose representatives: dill, basil and marigold. The experiment was conducted on plots Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, in Bački Petrovac, central Vojvodina, during rainy 2016 and drought, 2017, in two variants: 1. control, without irrigation and 2. variant with irrigation drop by drop. The amount of added water or irrigation norm was determined by monitoring soil water balance, and amounted to 120 mm four watering 2016 and 300 mm in 10 watering drought in 2017. The effect of irrigation on yield it was noticed in both years, rainy 2016 from 8.36% in basil to 47.41% in dill and dry 2017, 78.59% at dill to 105.46% at marigold. In the conditions of irrigation, in both years of production, increased with yields of green mass and yields of essential oils and carotenoids, as the main indicators quality cultivated crops. Environmental conditions (weather and soil) have a significant effect on grain yield and quality in sweet basil (Pejić et al., 2017) and dill (Maksimović et al., 2018). Grain shows a tendency to increase in the years having a higher total amount and better distribution of rainfall during critical plant development stages. Irrigation in these phases is a crucial factor for the successful production of dill, marigold and basil.

AB - This study was performed in order to assess weed flora diversity in organic and conventional peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) in the second year of growing, and to compare the effects of the two production systems on peppermint traits of agronomic importance. Weed control was not carried out in a season in which the survey was conducted (2014). Comparatively high weed floristic diversity was noted for organically maintained crop, with even five species that are invasive for Vojvodina region occurring in this system only. Therophyte life form dominated in both crops. Concerning the characteristics that are directly related to yield, conventionally grown peppermint outperformed the organic one, except for leaf essential oil content. In order to provide high yield and quality of organic peppermint, regular mechanical weed control and the use of appropriate organic fertilizers would be of the great importance.

AB - The aim of this study was to compare abundance of microorganisms in the rhizosphere of four
different medicinal and aromatic plant species (basil, mint, dill and marigold) grown under
both conventional and organic management. The trials were set up on chernozem soil at
experimental field of Bački Petrovac, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad
(northern Serbia). Rhizosphere soil samples were collected in two sampling terms during
2015 (June 2 and July 28, 2015) and analysed by the indirect dilution method followed by
plating of soil suspension on selective nutritive media. The obtained results showed
significant differences in microbial abundance between plant species, growing systems and
sampling terms. The highest number of azotobacters and cellulolytic microorganisms were
obtained in rhizosphere of marigold, while total microbial number and fungi were the most
abundant in rhizosphere of basil. The most common population of ammonifiers, free N-fixing
microorganisms and actinomycetes were recorded in rhizosphere of dill. Significantly higher
number of microorganisms was found in organic growing system compared to conventional,
while the number of most tested microbial groups was higher at the first sampling period.

AB - In this study we assessed the number of microorganisms in rhizosphere of peppermint (Mentha × piperita L.) as one of the
important aromatic species in Serbia. The trial was set up on chernozem soil at experimental field of Bački Petrovac, Institute
of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad (northern Serbia) in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Rhizosphere soil samples were collected
from both conventional and organic grown peppermint. In each year of investigation two samplings (June and July) were
performed for microbiological analysis. Soil samples were analyzed by the standard methods in four replications and
average number of microorganisms was calculated at 1.0 g absolutely dry soil. The results were analyzed in accordance with
three-way model of analysis of variance. The obtained results showed that a significantly higher number of ammonifiers,
azotobacters and free nitrogen-fixing bacteria was recorded in 2012 compared to 2013 and 2014. Also, a significantly higher
number of azotobacters and free nitrogen-fixing bacteria was obtained in organic than in conventional growing. In addition,
significant differences in number of fungi and actinomycetes were recorded between the sampling terms, i.e. significantly
higher numbers of these groups of microorganisms were found in the second term.

azotobacters and free nitrogen-fixing bacteria was recorded in 2012 compared to 2013 and 2014. Also, a significantly higher
number of azotobacters and free nitrogen-fixing bacteria was obtained in organic than in conventional growing. In addition,
significant differences in number of fungi and actinomycetes were recorded between the sampling terms, i.e. significantly
higher numbers of these groups of microorganisms were found in the second term.",

AB - This study was aimed to compare weeds occurring in basil crops grown under conventional and organic production systems. Weed flora recorded in the conventional production consisted of 16 taxa, with Setaria glauca and Portulaca oleracea dominating. Concerning the organic plots, only seven taxa were noted and dominant species were Sorghum halepense and Amaranthus retroflexus. Unexpectedly lower floristic diversity in the organic agricultural system was caused by omitted application of fertilizers during three consecutive years, still unbalanced agro ecological conditions, partial isolation of the organic plots and the presence of even four invasive weed species.
Neočekivano manji floristički diverzitet u organskom sistemu gajenja uzrokovan je izostankom đubrenja u poslednje tri godine, još sasvim neuravnoteženim ekološkim uslovima, delimičnom izolovanošću parcela i prisustvom čak četiri invazivne vrste.

AB - This study was performed to compare the weed flora in dill crops maintained conventionally and according to the principles of organic production. Out of 17 weed species noted for the two growing systems, even four (Amaranthus retroflexus L., Datura stramonium L., Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers., and Veronica persica Poir.) are invasive in Vojvodina region (Serbia). Weed infestation (number of individuals per m2) was significantly higher on the conventional plots (p = 0.0000**). The dominating species in conventional growing system were Convolvulus arvensis, Veronica persica and Chenopodium album (8.00, 6.67 and 5.33 individuals per m2, respectively), while Amaranthus retroflexus dominated on organic plots (8.00 individuals per m2). Regarding life forms of the recorded weed flora, therophytes dominate both in conventional (92.31%) and organic (66.67%) systems. The observed differences in weed flora are due to the specificities of dill conventional and organic production.
U CP mirođije dominiraju Convolvulus arvensis (8.00 ind./m2), Veronica persica (6.67 ind./m2) i Chenopodium album (5.33 ind./m2), dok Amaranthus retroflexus značajno dominira u OP sa 8.00 ind./m2. Biološki spektar pokazuje dominaciju terofita u oba sistema gajenja (CP - 92,31%; OP - 66,67%).

AB - This study was aimed at comparing the abundance of microorganisms in the rhizosphere of four different medicinal and aromatic plant species (basil, mint, dill and marigold) grown under both conventional and organic management on the chernozem soil at the experimental field of Bački Petrovac (Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia). Two sampling terms (June 1 and July 18, 2012) were performed to collect samples for microbiological analyses. The microbial abundance was higher in organic than in conventional system while at the same time significant differences were obtained only with dill rhizosphere. The differences in number of microorganisms belonging to different groups relied upon both plant species and sampling term. Thus, in mint, the recorded number of azotobacters and fungi was significantly higher whereas the number of ammonifiers was significantly lower. The present results indicate that organic growing system affected the abundance of microorganisms in rhizosphere of species investigated, especially in the second term of sampling.

Institut proizvodi certifikovano organsko seme i sadni materijal sledećih ratarskih, povrtarskih i lekovitih biljnih vrsta: ozima pšenica spelta (Nirvana), ozima pšenica (Etida), soja (Galina), heljda (Novosadska), jesenji beli luk (Bosut), pasulj (Balkan), proso (Biserka), pitoma nana (Danica), bosiljak (Sitnolisni), neven (Gelb orange), mirođija (Domaća aromatična), kao i proizvode takođe iz certifikovane organske proizvodnje: herba i list pitome nane, etarska ulja i čajni koncentrati.

AB - The effects of summer weather conditions upon the dynamics of soil moisture were studied on the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Bački Petrovac. The analysis included precipitations and mean daily air temperatures in 2012 and 2013 and their effect upon moisture content in marigold, basil and mint rhizosphere. It was performed in both conventionally and organic grown plants. Extremely warm and dry summer 2012 with three heat waves induced extended period of drought causing permanent wilting in both conventionally and organic grown plants in the second decade of July and in August. Summer 2013 was very warm and dry with two heat waves while at the same time plants experienced drought later due to a favourable soil moisture at the beginning of vegetation. Soil water content induced permanent wilting not until the middle of August. .

AB - Rhizosphere is the zone around the plant root, including the root, the soil on the root and the surrounding soil that is influenced by the roots. Microorganisms that live in that complex habitat affect the health of plants and their yield. Knowledge of the composition and quantity of organic compounds that are released by roots provides insight into the chemical and biological processes that occur in the rhizosphere. Each plant species selects its own specific bacterial community from a reservoir of bacteria present in the soil or on the seed. Using natural resources in a sustainable microbial agricultural production is based on the multiplication of active species and strains of microorganisms in artificial conditions and returning in their natural environment - soil where these microorganisms intensify the appropriate processes, produce more plant nutrients, stimulate the growth of plants and protect them from pathogens and toxic substances. These microorganisms may partially or completely replace mineral fertilizers and pesticides.
Proučavanje rizosfere vodi do mnogih korisnih interakcija.
