AB - Plant species and genotypes differ considerably with respect to the accumulation of mineral elements. This study examined the accumulation of aluminium (Al) in Aegilops and Triticum species with different genomes (AA, BB, BBAA, BBAADD and DD) and correlations between concentration of Al in the grain and features of the spike. Twenty different genotypes were included in three-year field experiments. The examined species and genomes differed significantly in their Al concentration in grain. The highest concentrations of Al were found in the grains of wild diploid Aegilops speltoides (BB genome), and the lowest in tetraploids (BBAA genome). A significant positive correlation was found between the concentration of Al in the grain and spike length, while negative correlations were found between concentration of Al in the grain and the number of grains per spike, grain weight per spike and thousand grains weight. The presence of higher Al content in the individual grains of tetraploid and hexaploid wheat with respect to diploid ancestors suggests that during the increase in ploidity the capacity of plants to uptake Al from soil increased concomitantly with the increase of grain capacity to serve as Al sink.

AB - Studies on genetic gains in a historical set of wheat cultivars mostly refer to grain yield and the associated agronomical and physiological traits, while less attention is paid to the improvement of wheat quality. In order to analyze the breeding progress in grain yield and with an emphasis on the main grain and flour properties, twenty-five winter wheat cultivars released in the Southern Pannonian Plain between 1930 and 2015 were grown in three consecutive seasons in Novi Sad (Serbia). The results from this study showed that grain yield increased linearly with an average rate of 45.5 kg ha(-1) yr(-1), implying that grain yield progress under conditions of the Southern Pannonian Plain have not reached the plateau. Protein and wet gluten content decreased significantly with year of cultivar release, with a bi-linear trend. On the other hand, sedimentation value and gluten index increased in modern wheat cultivars, indicating improved protein quality. Also, the main flour traits related to stronger gluten and high sedimentation value, such as extensograph energy, farinograph resistance and alveograph deformation work, showed improvement with year of cultivar release. Although there were no significant changes in Gluten score, subunits N, 7 + 9 and 5 + 10 at the Glu-A1, Glu-B1 and Glu-D1, respectively, were the most prevalent in modern cultivars. Improvement of the main grain and flour traits could be related with increased frequency of 7 + 9 and 5 + 10 subunits in modern wheat cultivars.

AB - During the past century, grain yield potential in winter wheat has been continuously improved as the result of changes in production technology and development of modern high-yielding cultivars. Previous studies of the grain yield progress in winter wheat has been mainly restricted to the analysis of changes in main grain yield determinates, such as grain weight and grain number. However, there is a lack of information about changes in stay green pattern related to breeding progress in winter wheat. Therefore, the main objective of this paper was to analyse the changes in the stay-green traits related to the grain yield improvement in a historical set of 25 winter wheat cultivars released during the last century.

AB - High grain yield potential and good baking properties are the two primary traits that plant producers consider when selecting new winter wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.). NS Igra is a modern winter wheat cultivar developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad and released in 2016. Cultivar NS Igra was selected from a cross between the French cultivar Aquila and the line Sav/Ren 162 developed from the mapping population between Savannah (Great Britain) and Renesansa (Serbia). The objective of this cross was to develop a modern winter wheat cultivar with the adaptation to the adverse production conditions. NS Igra is an F6 - derived line with the experimental number NS 33-14-3. Commission for the registration of varieties of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia conducted trial at multiple locations in two years, and it was found that NS Igra is a distinct, uniform and stable cultivar, and has higher grain yield than average of three check cultivars, and good technological quality. NS Igra is a mid-late maturity, a stay-green cultivar that should improve the stability of grain yield production and overall end-use quality of the winter wheat crop in the southern Pannonian Plain.

abstract = "High grain yield potential and good baking properties are the two primary traits that plant producers consider when selecting new winter wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.). NS Igra is a mid-late maturity, a stay-green cultivar that should improve the stability of grain yield production and overall end-use quality of the winter wheat crop in the southern Pannonian Plain., Visok potencijal za prinos i dobar tehnološki kvalitet su dve ključne osobine na koje poljoprivredni proizvođači najviše obraćaju pažnju prilikom odabira novih sorti ozime pšenice (Triticum aestivum L.).

AB - One of the prerequisites for further improvement of wheat is the assessment of genetic variability of wild relatives, for t he identification of desirable traits that can be used for the genetic enhancement of elite material. The aim of this study was to analyse the polymorphism of 15 microsatellite loci in the collection comprising of 40 genotypes of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), 32 genotypes belonging to other species within Triticum genus, and 3 genotypes from Aegilops genus. The results showed high level of genetic diversity present in the collections of cultivated wheat and its relatives. In the collection of bread wheat genotypes, 119 alleles were detected, while in related species 157 alleles were identified. The average gene diversity of 0.68 and 0.81 were found in cultivated wheat and relatives, respectively. The average PIC value in bread wheat was 0.65, and in related species was 0.79. Different dominant alleles were identified in the collections of bread wheat and related species at 9 out of 15 examined loci. Higher number of alleles in the collection of related species was found at 10 loci, while at three loci ( Xbarc 12, Xgwm284 and Xwmc457) higher number of alleles was found in bread wheat genotypes. The two loci (Xgwm495 and Xgwm3) had the same number of alleles in both groups of genotypes. Analyses of individual genomes indicated that only the A genome had simi lar genetic variability indicators in the both groups of genotypes, while genetic diversities of the B and D genomes in the cultivated wheat were significantly reduced in relation to the other species. All analysed parameters of genetic diversity showed significantly higher level of polymorphism present in the wild relatives than in the cultivated bread wheat, indicating a huge potential of using wild related species as a source of new genetic variability for further improvement of agronomicaly important traits in bread wheat.

AB - Phenotypic, biochemical and molecular evaluations of wheat collections are of a great importance to increase the knowledge of genetic diversity as the basic prerequisite for crop improvement in diff erent breeding programs. Large scale genotyping by molecular markers as well as phenotyping of agronomical important traits generated a lot of valuable information for wheat researchers during the last few decades. However, some morphological traits are almost forgotten and very rarely used in evaluating diversity of wheat germplasm. The aim of this study was to analyse the morphological diversity in a collection of 450 wheat accessions originating from all over the world. The genotypes were chosen from the wheat genetic collection of the Small Grains Department and sown at the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, location of Rimski Šančevi (45°20`N, 19°51`E). Five morphological traits were analysed and used as markers for distinctness of wheat genotypes: auricle colour (AC), coleoptile colour (CC), leaf colour (LC), colour at tillering time (CTT) and grain colour (GC). The Shannon diversity index (H) was estimated as a measure of morphological diversity. The results have shown that the most of the genotypes had white auricle colour (87%), white coleoptile colour (81%), dark green colour at tillering time (96%), green leaf colour (61%) and light red grain colour (43%). The average value for the Shannon diversity index was 0,77 indicating high level of morphological diversity in the collection. The lowest diversity (0,07) was found for CCT and the highest individual descriptor diversity was found for GC (0,68). The results indicated that morphological characterization with higer number of analysed traits can be used to improve description of wheat germplasm in addition to molecular and agronomical evaluations.

AB - Seeding rate is considered as one of the cultivation practices that most affect crop grain yield and its components. It is based on planting a predetermined number of live seeds per square metre to achieve a specific plant density optimal for overall health and vigor of the plants. In order to study influence of seeding density on tillering potential and yield performances of bread wheat, a set comprised of 80 elite wheat varieties and 16 breeding lines contrasting for tillering was sown at locality Rimski Sancevi, Novi Sad, Serbia in 2016-17 growing season. A trial was set at randomised block design with three replications for each seeding density (300 and 550 viable seeds per square metre) and size of each plot was five square metres. During the season and after harvest the following traits were recorded: number of tillers, stem height, spike length, grain yield and thousand-kernel weight (TKW). The genetic diversity and population structure of the 96 accessions were assessed by 60 microsatellite markers distributed across all three wheat genomes. The presence of marker-trait associations (MTA) was analysed using mixed linear model. A total of 496 alleles were detected, with average PIC value of 0.613.

AB - Climate significantly affects cropping systems across Europe. Knowledge of the variability in grain number per unit area and grain weight across different growing seasons and its association with grain yield is important for further improving small grain crop production. The main aim of this study was to compare grain yield and its numerical components among triticale, wheat, two-rowed and six-rowed barley cultivars across different growing seasons in a typical Pannonian location (south-eastern part of Central Europe). Trials with twelve winter cereal genotypes (three two-rowed barley, three six-rowed barley, three wheat and three triticale genotypes) were carried out in four successive seasons in Novi Sad, Serbia. Results of this study showed that growing season, species, cultivar, and species x growing season interaction significantly (p lt 0.01) affected grain yield and its determinants. Generally, triticale had higher average grain yield, while the lowest grain yield was recorded in six-rowed barleys. Grain yield was more associated with the number of grains/m 2 than with grain weight. Heading date was recognized as one of the important adaptive traits in crop development and yield determination. Short duration of the pre-anthesis phase in early cultivars and delayed anthesis in late cultivars significantly decreased the number of grains/spike in different species/spike types, reducing the final grain yield. Medium early cultivars had the highest number of grains/spike due to optimal duration of the pre-anthesis period and heading date and are suggested as recommendable for large scale production in the Pannonian environments.

AB - The aim of this study was to identify desirable, and also non-informative or highly correlated locations using GGE biplot. In this study, ten barley genotypes were tested across five locations for two growing seasons in official state trials performed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia. In both growing seasons, environment had the highest influence on barley yield, explaining 77.70% in 2010/11 and 86.41% in 2011/12 growing season of the total variation. A significant grain yield variation explained by environmental effects indicated that the environments tested in our study were highly diverse. Together, PC1 and PC2 amounted 86.03% and 66.91 degrees 4) of the genotype and genotype x environment interaction sum of squares, in 2010/11 and 2011/12, respectively. The results indicate that Rimski sancevi was most favorable location and should be used for further multi-location trials while location Sremska Mitrovica was the least informative and it can be excluded from further trials. Excluding one of two similar environments could save resources with minimal risk to lose important information about genotypes performance. According to the results of our study, it can be concluded that GGE biplot is useful method for environment evaluation.

AB - Plant species differ in their ability to accumulate mineral elements. Differences also exist among genotypes, lines, and varieties within species. Strontium (Sr) enters the food chain primarily via plants, and wheat products are amongst the most important pathways by which Sr enters the human body. The aim of this study was to analyze the accumulation of Sr in whole grain of various Aegilops and Triticum species with different genomes (AA, BB, BBAA, BBAADD, and DD). During three experimental years plants were grown in temperate continental climate on a calcareous, gleyic chernozem soil. The results reveal that the studied species and genomes differed significantly in Sr accumulation in the grains. The average Sr concentration of the grains ranged, depending on the year of study and genotype, from 0.70 to 3.89 mg kg(-1) DM. The grain of wild diploid Aegilops speltoides with BB genome contained significantly more Sr than all of the other analyzed genotypes. Grains of wild and cultivated tetraploid wheat genotypes had the lowest Sr concentration. The modern cultivated hexaploid wheat varieties displayed substantial variation in Sr concentration in the grains. The examined genotypes also differed significantly with respect to their mass of 1000 grains, which was the smallest in Aegilops speltoides. There was a significantly negative correlation between the average mass of a 1000 grains and concentration of Sr. The results show that even when the background concentration of Sr was relatively low, wheat genotypes accumulated it in the grains, although to a different extent. Therefore, selection of wheat genotypes which accumulate less Sr in the grain could contribute to improve food quality.

AB - Even though calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr) and barium (Ba) belong to the same group of the periodic table of elements, and thus have similar chemical features, their importance for plants differs greatly. Since plants do not have the ability to completely discriminate between essential (e.g. Ca) and non-essential elements (e.g. Sr and Ba), they readily take all of them up from soil solution, which is reflected in the ratios of concentrations of those elements in plant tissues, and it influences their nutritive characteristics. The ability of plant species and genotypes to take up and accumulate chemical elements in their different tissues is related to their genetic background. However, differences in chemical composition are the least reflected in their reproductive parts. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate ratios of concentrations of Ca, Sr and Ba in the whole grain of diploid and tetraploid wheat ‒ ancestors of common wheat, as well as in hexaploid commercial cultivars, grown in the field, at the same location, over a period of three years. The investigated genotypes accumulated Ca, Sr and Ba at different levels, which is reflected in the ratio of their concentrations in the grain. The lowest ratio was established between Ba and Sr, followed by Ca and Ba, while the highest ratio was between Ca and Sr. Moreover, the results have shown that the year of study, genotype and the combination highly significantly affected the ratio of the concentration Ca:Sr, Ca:Ba, and Ba:Sr.
AB - Kalcijum (Ca), stroncijum (Sr) i barijum (Ba) pripadaju istoj grupi elemenata Periodnog sistema i imaju slične hemijske osobine.

Rekombinovanjem i implementiranjem poželjnih gena, novosadske sorte poseduju visok nivo tolerantnosti na abiotičke (suša, visoke i niske temperature, itd.) i biotičke (bolesti i štetočine) stresne faktore.

AB - This study analysed polymorphism of 15 microsatellite loci in the collection comprising of 40 genotypes of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), 32 genotypes belonging to other species within Triticum genus and 3 genotypes from Aegilops genus. The results showed significant differences in the variability of the tested loci in bread wheat and related species. In the collection of bread wheat genotypes, 119 alleles were detected with the average number of 7.9 alleles per locus. In wild and cultivated related species 157 alleles were identified, with the average of 10.5 alleles per locus. All analysed parameters of microsatellite loci variability (PIC value, gene diversity, heterozygosity, etc.) indicated higher level of polymorphism in wild relatives than in the cultivated bread wheat. Analyses of individual genomes indicated that in the bread wheat genetic diversity of the B and D genomes was significantly reduced in relation to the A genome, while the differences in polymorphism between genomes in the wild relatives were significantly lower. The results showed that wild related species can be used as sources for new variability in wheat breeding.

AB - In the 20th century, grain yield of winter barley has increased due to advances in both breeding and crop management practices. Knowledge about the association of agronomic traits with genetic gains in yield potential is necessary to improve future breeding programs. Therefore, we studied the variation in grain yield, spike length, heading date, thousand grain weight, hectolitre mass and plant height of two-rowed winter barley cultivars that were released between 1977 and 2010, in a 2-year field trial. Our results showed that most of the analyzed traits were significantly affected by the cultivar, year and cultivar-by-year interaction. The present study showed that grain yield was positively correlated with the year of release. The average rate of grain yield increase in Serbia was 46 kg ha(-1) per year. Further, grain yield was negatively correlated with plant height and heading date. Plant height and hectolitre mass of modern cultivars showed a significant declining trend, from the oldest to the newest cultivars. An improved understanding of the changes in agronomic traits over the last 40 years of barley breeding will help to identify targets for further breeding progress and improve the genetic potential of barley.

AB - The objective of this study was to compared fourteen different similarity coefficients and their influence in sister line wheat cultivars clustering. Seventeen sister cultivars developed from two crosses were used and fingerprinted with 19 wheat microsatellite markers. Comparisons among the similarity coefficients were made using the Sperman correlation analysis, dendogram evaluation (visual inspection and consensus fork index CIc), projection efficiency in a two-dimensional space, and groups formed by the Tocher optimization procedure. The Sperman correlation coefficients among the fourteen similarity coefficients were all high showing a strong association between them. The correlation coefficient between Dice and Kulczinski and Ochiai I as well as between Hamann and Simple matching and between Kulczinski and Ochiai I was equal to 1. Although visual estimation of the dendograms shows almost identical clustering structures, CIc indexes indicate that all coefficients are not identical.

AB - The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of barium in grain of various Aegilops and Triticum species with different genomes. The studied species differed significantly with respect to the concentration of barium. The grain of wild diploid Aegilops speltoides, the donor of B genome, contained significantly higher Ba concentration than all other analyzed genotypes. Wild and cultivated tetraploid wheats (Triticum diciccoides, Triticum dicoccon, Triticum turgidum and Triticum durum) had the lowest Ba concentration in grain. The modern cultivated hexaploid varieties presented substantial variation in grain concentration of barium. The highest Ba concentration (3.42 mg/kg) occurred in Serbian winter wheat variety Panonnia.
Zrno divljeg diplo ida Aegilops speltoides, donator B genoma sadrži znatno veću koncentraciju barijuma nego svi ostali ispitivani genotipovi. Divlja i pitoma tetraploidna pšenica (Triticum diciccoides, Triticum dicoccon, Triticum turgidum i Triticum durum) imala je najnižu koncentraciju barijuma u zrnu.

AB - Wheat grain quality has in the focus of wheat breeders worldwide, besides breeding for yield, aiming at production of the best possible input for the processing industry. Twenty-five winter wheat varieties were studied to assess the progress of breeding for wheat quality in the last 60 years. The study included varieties released in different years representing all the various periods in Serbian wheat breeding. Only varieties that played a major role in Serbian wheat production were selected for this four-year trial (2010-2013) carried out at the Rimski Šančevi site near the city of Novi Sad, Serbia.
