AB - Sorghum is considered as tolerant species toward different environmental conditions. Genetic potential for sorghum yield is being exploited depending on the intensity of production and effect of biotic and abiotic environmental factors. Beside drought, which is the most important abiotic stress factor, extreme temperatures and soil factors can affect sorghum production and yield. This paper gives a summary of previous studies related to the effects of extreme temperatures and unfavorable soil pH on sorghum plants, as well as the plants reaction to such effects. The summary includes studies related to variability analysis of sorghum germplasm and patterns of inheriting tolerance towards stress caused by extremely low or high temperatures and production on acid or alkaline soils.

AB - As one of the most common medicinal plants, chamomile is grown on approximately 20,000 ha in the world and on 350 -400 ha in Serbia. Good yields can be expected if the plant is grown up to 500 m altitude. The plant is adapted to various soils; it has modest nitrogen demands and tolerates drought and salinity. The usual yields are: 500-1,000 kg/ha of dry flower heads, 150 kg/ha of seed and up to 4.5-5 kg/ha of essential oil. Drug (Chamomillae flos) has moisture below 12%, appropriate physico-chemical and microbiological properties, referred low amount of heavy metals and at least 4 ml/kg of essential oil. The yield of flower heads and the essential oil quantity and quality depend on various environmental factors, as well as on the genetic background. There is more than forty chamomile cultivars realized in the world; three of them originate from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (Banatska, Tip 29 and Tetraploidna). Banatska and Tetraploidna are widely grown. The cultivars are characterized by high yield potential and appropriate essential oil content.
Droga (Chamomillae flos) ima vlagu ispod 12%, odgovarajuće fizičko-hemijske i mikrobiološke osobine, propisano nizak sadržaj teških metala i najmanje 4 ml/kg etarskog ulja.

AB - The effects of weather conditions (precipitation and average daily air temperatures) during the 2014 vegetation period on the moisture of soil planted with pot marigold (Calendula officinalis L.), peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) under organic and conventional production system were analyzed. The analyses were carried out at the experimental fields of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad; Alternative Crops and Organic Production Department in Bački Petrovac. Except for May, the temperatures were higher than for the multi-year average, which contributed to the increased plant evapotranspiration. The frequent precipitation moderately satisfied plant water requirements during the vegetation period. Soil moisture in the rhizosphere zone was generally at sufficient level of water supply. However, in the mid June and during the July soil moisture was at the level which requires irrigation. In organic production, due to better plant development and higher water consumption, occasional lower humidity of the soil was registered, when irrigation would be desirable. Although the sum of precipitation was higher in 2014 compared to the multi-year average, the results confirmed the importance of proper distribution of precipitation in order to maintain normal plant growth and development.

AB - Dill (Anethum graveolens L.) is a one-year herbaceous, spicy plant, which has aromatic smell and taste. One of its important ingredients is essential oil. The experiment showing the effect of irrigation on essential oil and biomass yield of dill was conducted in rainy 2016 and dry 2017 in two variants: control (without irrigation) and variant with irrigation. Favourable water balance of the soil was provided by applying drop-by-drop irrigation method. The average yield of fresh biomass was 8,252 kg ha-1 (10,194 kg ha-1 under irrigation and 6,310 kg ha-1 in control). Under irrigation, the yield of biomass was higher than the control variant by 78.59% in 2017 and 47.41% in 2016. Under irrigation, essential oil content and yield were higher than the control by 10.73% and 95.97% in 2017, respectively, and 3.93% and 54.06% in 2016, respectively.

U uslovima navodnjavanja utrošak vode na evapotranspiraciju (ЕТm) iznosio je 502 mm, a na kontrolnoj varijanti bez navodnjavanja (ЕТa) 352 mm. Nisu utvrđene statistički značajne razlike u vrednostima iskorišćenosti vode dodate navodnjavanjem (Iwue) između SSDI varijante (2,66 kg m-3) i DI varijante navodnjavanja (1,80 kg m-3).
AB - The experiment with irrigated maize was conducted at Bački Petrovac experimental field (N 45°19`, E 19°50`) of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad on the calcareous chernozem soil on the loess terrace in 2018. The plants were drip irrigated with a lateral row per plant row (0.7 m) with drippers spaced every 0.33 m. The drippers had an average flow of 2.0 1 h-1 under a pressure of 100 kPa. The experiment included two irrigation variants, with lateral placed on the soil surface (DI) and buried under the surface of soil at a depth of 5-6 cm (SSDI). The trial also included the non-irrigated (rainfed) control variant. Irrigation was scheduled on the basis of water balance method using reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and crop coefficients (kc). ETo was calculated by Hargreaves equation. Daily evapotranspiration (ETd) was computed using the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and crop coefficient (kc) of 0.3-0.5, 0.7-0.85, 1.05-1.2, 0.8-0.9, and 0.5-0.6 for April-May, June, July August and September respectively. Maize hybrid NS 6030 were used for the trials. Water applied by irrigation was 55 mm. In the study, the yield of maize was statistically higher in SSDI irrigated variant (14,311 t ha-1) than in non-irrigated, control variant (12.846 t ha-1). The statistical differences were not detected between DI (13.833 t ha-1) and control variant and SSDI and DI variant of irrigation. Evapotranspiration rate in irrigation conditions (ETm) and in rainfed control variant (ETa) were 502 mm and 352 mm respectively. The values of irrigation water use efficiency (Iwue) obtained on SSDI (2.66 kg m-3) and DI (1.80 kg m-3) variant were not statistically different. Higher yields and Iwue values of maize obtained in SSDI irrigation variant compared to DI variant, regardless the fact that the differences were not statistically significant, indicate the need for further research because of the numerous advantages that irrigation with laterals placed shallow below the surface area have.

AB - Irrigation improves the water regime of soil creating favorable conditions for growing plants. Frequent oscillations of weather conditions in the region, first of all the amount and distribution of precipitation, are the reason why irrigation is needed in plant production. The aim of the study was to detect the effect of irrigation on the yield and quality of marigold (Calendula officinalis L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). The experiments were conducted at the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops. Irrigation was scheduled on the basis of the water balance method. Daily evapotranspiration (ETd) was computed from the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and crop coefficient (kc) in May, June, July and August of 0.5, 0.6, 1.1 and 1.0, respectively. ETo was calculated using Hargreaves equation. The irrigation depth was restricted to the soil depth of 0.3 m. In other words, irrigation started when readily available water in the soil layer of 0.3 m was completely depleted by plants. The irrigation rate was 30 mm (30 l-1 m-2) while the amount of water added by irrigation during the season was 120 mm in 2016 and 300 mm in 2017. According to the results, the yield of fresh herb of all two plants under irrigation was higher compared to non-irrigated, control variant. As well essential oil and carotenoids, the main indicators of the quality of investigation plants were also affected by irrigation.

AB - The cultivar Biserka, in the experiment carried out in 2018, in the experimental field of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, in Bački Petrovac, has achieved excellent agronomic characteristics. Stems of cultivar Biserka was light green, erect, sometimes branched at the base, and grow 0.9–1.3 m tall. Leaves alternate along the stem were covered with short hair and arching leaves may reach and over 30 cm length. Plants have shallow, fibrous root systems and produce few tillers. Cultivar Biserka has a drooping branched compact inflorescence 20–30 cm long made of many stalked, ovoid spikelet and reproduces by seeds yellow color, 2.5–3 mm long. Analysis of variance was found highly significant effect of nutrition in all tested characters. Foliar nutrition had the most highly significant influence on plant height. Investigation where showed a considerable variation of biomass yield which was independence from foliar nutrition.

AB - The application of irrigation soil is regulated and improved its water regime, where by improving production traits and growing conditions of plants which are produced on them, because of that, and for mitigation increasing and more frequent oscillations of weather conditions during the production years. The trial was conducted in irrigation medicinal, aromatic and spice herbs, whose representatives: dill, basil and marigold. The experiment was conducted on plots Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, in Bački Petrovac, central Vojvodina, during rainy 2016 and drought, 2017, in two variants: 1. control, without irrigation and 2. variant with irrigation drop by drop. The amount of added water or irrigation norm was determined by monitoring soil water balance, and amounted to 120 mm four watering 2016 and 300 mm in 10 watering drought in 2017. The effect of irrigation on yield it was noticed in both years, rainy 2016 from 8.36% in basil to 47.41% in dill and dry 2017, 78.59% at dill to 105.46% at marigold. In the conditions of irrigation, in both years of production, increased with yields of green mass and yields of essential oils and carotenoids, as the main indicators quality cultivated crops. Environmental conditions (weather and soil) have a significant effect on grain yield and quality in sweet basil (Pejić et al., 2017) and dill (Maksimović et al., 2018). Grain shows a tendency to increase in the years having a higher total amount and better distribution of rainfall during critical plant development stages. Irrigation in these phases is a crucial factor for the successful production of dill, marigold and basil.

AB - The poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) is used for oil and protein production from seeds, as food, in medicine (because it contains alkaloids of capsules - morphine, codeine, etc.), in cosmetics industry, in industry of colours, etc. The evaluation of poppy quality is generally based on the oil and morphine content. The experiment with poppy was conducted in four replications on the plots of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, in Bački Petrovac (φN 45 ° 20 ', λE 19 ° 40', msl 89), in 2017. The aim of this experiment was to examine the morpho-productive properties of the Petrovac poppy population sown in spring. The examined poppy population had a round shape of the capsule. On average, plant height was 93 cm, the number of capsule in plant was 2.67, the capsule length was 35.70 mm, capsule width was 34.90 mm, and the capsule weight was 3.68 g. The seed weight in the capsule was 1.86 g while the 1000 seed weight was 0.34 g. The stability of the tested parameters measured by the coefficient of variation, recorded a low variation, which shows us that the examined population is a good base for stable production and for further work in the breeding of this oilseed.

AB - This study was performed in order to assess weed flora diversity in organic and conventional peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) in the second year of growing, and to compare the effects of the two production systems on peppermint traits of agronomic importance. Weed control was not carried out in a season in which the survey was conducted (2014). Comparatively high weed floristic diversity was noted for organically maintained crop, with even five species that are invasive for Vojvodina region occurring in this system only. Therophyte life form dominated in both crops. Concerning the characteristics that are directly related to yield, conventionally grown peppermint outperformed the organic one, except for leaf essential oil content. In order to provide high yield and quality of organic peppermint, regular mechanical weed control and the use of appropriate organic fertilizers would be of the great importance.

AB - The effect on sugar beet yield parameters and microbiological soil status was studied using two techniques of sugar beet inoculation with strains of Azotobacter chroococcum. Cultivar 'Drena' was used in the study, and field trial was set under the conditions of organic farming system in Bački Petrovac. A mixture of three strains of Azotobacter chroococcum was used as microbial fertilizer. Inoculation was performed by: (A) incorporation of strains into soil before sowing; and (B) repeated incorporation of strains into soil two weeks after sowing. PGP characterization of the strains confirmed the ability of producing indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) from 12.63 μg ml-1 to 14.95 μg ml-1, nitrogen fixation, and P-solubilization. Positive effects on the number of azotobacter and free nitrogen fixers in rhizosphere were obtained by inoculation, as well as positive effects on the tested sugar beet yield parameters. The largest increase in root yield, yield of crystal sugar, and yield of polarised sugar compared with the control was obtained by repeated soil inoculation, ranging from 22 to 23%.

Institut proizvodi certifikovano organsko seme i sadni materijal sledećih ratarskih, povrtarskih i lekovitih biljnih vrsta: ozima pšenica spelta (Nirvana), ozima pšenica (Etida), soja (Galina), heljda (Novosadska), jesenji beli luk (Bosut), pasulj (Balkan), proso (Biserka), pitoma nana (Danica), bosiljak (Sitnolisni), neven (Gelb orange), mirođija (Domaća aromatična), kao i proizvode takođe iz certifikovane organske proizvodnje: herba i list pitome nane, etarska ulja i čajni koncentrati.

abstract = "Intenzivni razvoj poljoprivredne proizvodnje je, donekle neracionalnim korišćenjem zemljišta, vode, vazduha, biljnog i životinjskog sveta, narušio ravnotežu na našoj planeti.

AB - Many cultivars of cabbage are grown in Serbia, but two local cultivars, 'Futoski' and 'Srpski melez', predominate the cabbage production in Central Serbia and the Vojvodina Province. Their advantage over the introduced cultivars is that they are better suited to the local taste and methods of use (pickling of whole heads or sauerkraut, preparation of traditional local dishes and fresh consumption). It should be noted that local cabbage populations are widely grown in remote parts of Serbia. A recently completed SEED-Net Project was aimed at collecting local cabbage populations on the territory of Serbia. Populations were collected in the locations of Boljevac, Curug, Deronje, Donji Katun (Varvarin), Futog, Taras (Elemir), Leskovac. The sources of collected materials were mostly local markets, home gardens and home stores in isolated villages, where old farmers still maintain land races of various brassicas in small quantities and for domestic use. These cabbages have juicier and thinner leaves, which predisposes their heads for fine grating and also makes them pliable and easy to roll up during food preparation. It is characteristics like these that give the local populations an advantage over hybrids. The climatic and soil characteristics in the typical and traditional production area favor the production of late cabbage cultivars. Fresh cabbage from Vojvodina production area is a good raw material for fresh use and biological fermentation. The winter cabbage is suitable for biofermentation and long storage in the form of sauerkraut. The fermented 'Futoski' cabbage has been certified at one point as a product with geographic origin.

AB - Sorghum as a tropical crop has some physiological predispositions for tolerance to unfavourable environmental conditions. Nevertheless, its genetic potential for yield is limited by influence of abiotic stress. The lack of water leads to water stress as one of the most important abiotic stresses, affecting plants at any growth phase. There are a few physiological tolerance factors recorded in sorghum species. Due to molecular marker analysis genomic regions responsible for pre- and post-flowering drought tolerance are identified. Integration of physiology, agronomy and molecular biology is substantial for development of elite drought-tolerant parental lines. .

AB - The effects of summer weather conditions upon the dynamics of soil moisture were studied on the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Bački Petrovac. The analysis included precipitations and mean daily air temperatures in 2012 and 2013 and their effect upon moisture content in marigold, basil and mint rhizosphere. It was performed in both conventionally and organic grown plants. Extremely warm and dry summer 2012 with three heat waves induced extended period of drought causing permanent wilting in both conventionally and organic grown plants in the second decade of July and in August. Summer 2013 was very warm and dry with two heat waves while at the same time plants experienced drought later due to a favourable soil moisture at the beginning of vegetation. Soil water content induced permanent wilting not until the middle of August. .

AB - The Jegricka had been a natural stream which was partially regulated and included into the canal network Danube-Tisza-Danube Hydro System (Vojvodina, Serbia). The stream has a multifunctional character. It provides irrigation water and serves for land reclamation activities in the area through which it flows. The area includes farmland for the most part and several small villages. The stream itself and a zone along its banks have been recognized for special ecological significance and they were awarded the status of a protected natural resource. Sediments from the Jegricka stream have been analyzed in order to assess possible impact of various degradation processes on the environmental status of this protected natural resort. Concentrations of hazardous and harmful substances were determined in 20 sediment samples gathered at different points of the stream. The analyses involved eight trace elements (heavy metals and microelements) and sixteen PAH compounds. The obtained results indicated that the quality of sediments was mostly satisfactory, in spite of a relatively large exposure to point and non-point pollution sources (wastewaters from municipal and industrial sources, agriculture etc.). The contents of heavy metals in the sediments were found to be within the limits of tolerance (Pb 3.28-27.40; Cd 0.00-0.20; Cr 7.27-38.97; Ni 5.11-35.66; Cu 5.91-33.74; Zn 13.80-92.12; Co 1.60-11.94 mg kg(-1)). Also, the concentration of total PAHs was below the level considered as harmful to the environment. The concentrations of individual PAHs in the sediments were as a rule below 1 mg kg(-1). The only exceptions were increased arsenic concentrations. Maximum arsenic concentrations determined for some locations, for example 79.37 and 69.73 mg kg(-1), exceed several-folds the maximum permissible concentration. These excessive concentrations may have a negative impact on the environment in the stream itself and its surroundings.

These excessive concentrations may have a negative impact on the environment in the stream itself and its surroundings.",

AB - This paper presents an analysis of soil moisture dynamics in the 2012 growing season at the experiment field of the Department for Organic Farming and Biodiversity, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops. Soil moisture dynamics was monitored in plots under medicinal plants (marigold, mint and basil) grown by two production systems: conventional and organic. In the summer months (June, July and August), i.e., in the critical period for plant growth, high air temperatures, low air humidity, rainfall deficit, and frequent hot winds caused dry spells that varied in intensity. The rainfall during these months was insufficient to meet the total water requirements of the cultivated plants. The rainfall was significantly lower than the annual average (lower by 24.6% in June, by 93.2% in August). The combined effect of weather conditions increased the soil evapotranspiration. Consequently, in both growing systems, the readily available soil moisture was on the verge of accessibility in June and early July, while the level fell under the permanent wilting point in the second half July and in August.
Analiza dinamike vlažnosti zemljišta izvršena je u usevima lekovitih biljnih vrsta (neven, menta i bosiljak) gajenih u dva načina proizvodnje: konvencionalni i organski. Tokom letnjih meseci (jun, jul i avgust) 2012. godine u kritičnom periodu vegetacije visoke temperature, deficit padavina, niska relativna vlažnost i česti, topli vetrovi doveli su do pojave suše različitog intenziteta.

AB - Soil samples in disturbed state were taken in order to control fertility and monitor contents of harmful and hazardous substances in Vojvodina soils and possibilities of soil degradation in general. Moderately contaminated soils were selected for examination. Microbial activity in contaminated soil and the impact of harmful and hazardous substances (pesticides) on soil microorganisms were observed and most resistant microorganisms were isolated. Vegetation experiments were organized to study the effect of chelating agents EDTA and EDDS on copper adoption and translocation in rapeseed and sunflower. Importance of some ions in the complexation of copper chelators and their undesirable effects on copper uptake were established. Field trials were organized to study the effect of hydrogel on water uptakes by plants, increase in rate and the increase in rate of removal of hazardous and harmful substances from soil solution. At all phases of the project, we monitored the effectiveness of soil bioremediation soils by means of the application of chelating agents, stimulative preparations such as hydrogel and certain microorganisms. It effectiveness was measured in terms of plant growth rate and intensity in removal of hazardous and harmful substances from contaminated soil.
AB - U cilju kontrole plodnosti i sagledavanja sadržaja opasnih i štetnih materija u zemljištima Južnobačkog okruga i njegove degradacije (u širem smislu), odabrana su umereno zagađena zemljišta.

AB - In order to establish the current status and assess the impact of agriculture in the area planned to be included into the envisaged environmental network, we analyzed the arable soil, pasture soil and sediments for the content of heavy metals. Out of a total 38 analyzed soil and sediment samples, only 2 were found to contain heavy metals in concentrations higher than the MAC for agriculture soil. An increased concentration of copper (189.1 mg/kg) was recorded in a sample of vineyard soil and increased nickel concentrations were recorded in one sample of pasture soil (60.9 mg/kg). Further research showed that the high Ni concentrations were of the geochemical origin, while the high Cu was of anthropogenic origin. Out of a total 10 sediment samples analyzed according to Dutch criteria for threshold values, increased concentrations of Cu and Zn were found in one sample, and high concentrations of Ni were found in 4 samples. At the same time, the heavy metal contents in the analyzed sediments were much below the anticipated remediation values.

AB - Nitrogen is the most important element for high yield and in addition affects the adoption and
accumulation of certain ions in plants, including sulphur. The aim of this paper was to examine the effect of increasing
quantities of nitrogen fertilizer on sulphur adoption of winter wheat and triticale and to find optimum doses of nitrogen
that can give good grain quality. A two year stationery trial with increasing quantities of N (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha”)
and three varieties of wheat and one of triticale was performed at the experimant field of the Institute of Field and
Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. The grain sulphur content of the winter wheat and triticale grew with increasing doses of
nitrogen fertilizers. The grain sulphur content of all cultivars responded positively to the increasing nitrogen quantities
up to the rate of 100 kg ha! N in first and 150 kg ha | in second year of examination. It was determined that the
genotypes responded differently to different rates of nitrogen fertilizers when it came to their sulphur contents. The
present study showed that by using the right quantities of nitrogen fertilizer we can optimize the fertilization in wheat
production with proper environmental care.

AB - An investigation was carried out at Rimski Sancevi experiment field of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. The aim was to determine the response of soybean to soil water deficit at specific growth stages to get more information that could improve the cropping technology of soybean in Vojvodina region, northern part of the Serbia Republic. The crop response factor (k(y)) which is the amount of yield (Y) lost per unit of evapotranspiration (ET) loss, well expresses the response of the crop to water deficit. A larger (k(y)) value indicates greater yield losses due to water deficit. It is highly important to know not only the (k(y)) values from the literature but also those determined for a particular crop species under a specific set of climatic and soil conditions. The values of yield response factor (k(y)) were derived from the linear relationship between relative seasonal evapotranspiration deficits (1-ETa/ETm) and relative yield loss (1-Y-a/Y-m). The obtained results indicate that in the climatic conditions of Vojvodina soybean is most sensitive to water stress at the stage of yield formation - pod development and pod filling (k(y) 0.46) but less sensitive at the vegetative stage (k(y) 0.33) and at the stage of flowering (k(y) 0.41). Values of (ky) in the growing period (k(y) 0.66) approved that soybean is moderate sensitive to soil water stress in the climatic conditions of Vojvodina. Obtained values of (k(y)) could be used as a good platform for soybean growers in the region in terms of optimum utilization of irrigation water and for the planning, design and operation of irrigation projects in the region.
