Genetic progress in grain yield and associated changes in spikelet and grain traits in historical set of Pannonian wheat cultivars

AB  - Changes in yield components and spike traits are associated with wheat grain yield genetic progress. The aim of this study was to determine variation in yield components, spike and individual grain traits, and their role in winter wheat grain yield genetic improvement under conditions of the Pannonian Plain. Therefore, two-year field trials were conducted in a southern Pannonian location (Novi Sad, Serbia) with ten winter wheat cultivars released between 1931 and 2015. The grain yield had a significant positive linear relationship with the year of cultivar release, showing the improvement rate of 46.4 kg ha−1 yr−1. Grain yield increase has been positively related to the improvement of spike grain weight. Spike grain weight improvement with a rate of 0.25 g yr−1 was followed by simultaneous rise of the individual grain number and grain weight at different positions within a spikelet. Compared to other grains at different positions within a spikelet, G3 grains showed the highest rate of grain weight and the grain number improvement with the year of cultivar release. On the other hand, there was a significant decrease trend of grain protein content in individual grains at different positions. Therefore, wheat breeders should be more focused on grain number and weight improvement of distal grains in order to regain higher grain yield genetic gain under conditions of the Pannonian Plain.

Nitrogen use efficiency in modern wheat cultivars affected by sowing dates

AB  - To enhance wheat productivity through advancements in crop production technology and breeding methodology, it is necessary to improve our understanding of the physiological processes associated with biomass accumulation, nitrogen uptake and nitrogen use efficiency. Therefore, a field trial with six winter wheat cultivars grown under conditions of four different sowing dates during two growing seasons was conducted to quantify the influence of cultivars and sowing date on variation in nitrogen use efficiency traits, biomass accumulation and nitrogen uptake, and their role in grain yield and nitrogen yield determination. Results showed that delaying sowing from October to November reduced grain yield by 1.49 t ha−1 on average per sowing date, and also caused a reduction of 14.6 and 14.3 kg ha−1 in nitrogen uptake at anthesis and maturity, respectively. Late sowing negatively impacted both grain yield and nitrogen grain yield in winter wheat cultivars, which was attributed to changes in biomass accumulation and nitrogen uptake at anthesis and maturity, as well as a decrease in nitrogen use efficiency and nitrogen uptake efficiency. The decrease in nitrogen use efficiency under late sowing was primarily due to a decrease in nitrogen uptake efficiency, as the increase in nitrogen utilization efficiency could not compensate for the nitrogen uptake efficiency decrease. The study findings suggest that midearly cultivars produced the highest average grain under different sowing conditions, mainly due to greater biomass accumulation during the pre-anthesis period, which provided additional nitrogen storage capacity. Therefore, under conditions of the Pannonian Plain wheat producers should be focused on the medium early cultivars characterized by increased pre-anthesis biomass accumulation.

AB  - Proizvodnja strnih žita u sezoni 2022/23. bila je obeležena značajnom klimatskom varijabilnošću i pojavom intenzivnih bolesti, posebno žute rđe. Ovi uslovi žnačajno su uticali na prinos i kvalitet zrna. Tokom sezone, bilo je izuzetno toplih jesenjih i zimskih perioda, umerenih temperatura u prolećnom delu vegetacije i obilnih padavina u fazama formiranja, nalivanja i sazrevanja zrna. Izazovi su se javili i u veži sa visokim troškovima ulaganja u proizvodnji, što je dovelo do smanjene upotrebe mineralnih đubriva. Udeo nedeklarisanog semena, sa nepoznatom upotrebnom vrednošću, dostigao je oko 60%, što je rezultat dugogodišnjih neodgovarajućih odnosa između primarnih proižvođača, otkupljivača pšenice i države.

AB  - Prilikom stvaranja novih sorti pšenice (Triticum aestivum L.), pored visokog potencijala za prinos i dobrog tehnološkog kvaliteta neophodno je i inkorporirati gene odgovorne za otpornost prema poleganju, niskim temperaturama i adaptabilnost na različite uslove proizvodnje. NS Lenija, nova sorta ozime pšenice stvorena u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo (Institut od nacionalnog značaja za Republiku Srbiju) nastala je veštačkim ukrštanjem tri divergentna roditelja: sorte Kupava (Rusija) i sorti Donna (Srbija) i Arija (Srbija). Ukrštanjem ovih roditelja uspešno su iskombinovani geni odgovorni za visok potencijal za prinos, dobar tehnološki kvalitet, adaptabilnost i stabilnost, koji omogućavaju da se ova sorta može uspešno gajiti u agroekološkim uslovima Jugoistočne Evrope. Tokom trajanja dvogodišnjih ogleda Komisije za priznavanje sorti, NS Lenija je uspešno prošla DUS test (različitost, uniformnost i stabilnost), i na 7 ispitivanih lokaliteta ostvarila je u proseku značajno veći prinos zrna u odnosu na prosek prinosa zrna sorti standarda. Prilikom ocena hemijsko-tehnoloških osobina, svrstana je u kvalitetnu klasu II, u farinogramsku kvalitetnu grupu A-2, i u tehnološku grupu poboljšivača.
AB  - During the creation of new wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.), in addition to high yield po tential and good technological quality, it is necessary to incorporate genes responsible for resistance to lodging, low temperatures and adaptability to different production conditions. NS Lenija, a new winter wheat cultivar developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (National Institute of the Republic of Serbia) was created by crossing the three divergent parents: cultivar Kupava (Russia) and the cultivars Donna (Serbia) and Aria (Serbia). By crossing these parents, genes responsible for high yield potential, good technological quality, adaptability and stability were successfully combined, enabling this cultivar to be successfully cultivated in the agroecological conditions of Southeast Europe. During the two-year trials of the Commission for the registration of varieties, NS Lenija successfully passed the DUS test (distinctness, uniformity and stability), and on the 7 tested locations achieved a significantly higher average grain yield compared to the grain yield of the check cultivars. When evaluating its chemical and technological properties, it was classified in quality class II, farinograph quality group A-2, and in the technological group of improvers.

AB  - Tokom prethodnih 100 godina kod najznačajnijih ratarskih useva u Panonskoj niziji zabeležen je porast prinosa usled unapređenje agronomskih praksi i genetičkog potencijala za prinos. Tokom prošlog veka u Srbiji, prinosi zrna su se povećavali za od 63 kg ha-1 kod kukuruza, 45 kg ha-1 kod pšenice i 46 kg ha-1 kod ječma. Brojna istraživanja ukazala su da je povećanje prinosa zrna kod strnih žita u bliskoj vezi sa rastom broja zrna po jedinici površine. Smanjenje visine biljaka (5 cm dekadno) dovelo je do povećanja žetvenog indeksa, usled veće translokacije suve materije u klas tokom perioda pre cvetanja rezultujući u povečanju broja cvetova po klasu. Tokom poslednjih 100 godina došlo je do značajnih promena u trajanju fenoloških faza kod sorti pšenice i ječma gajenih u Panonskoj niziji. Trajanje perioda od nicanja do cvetanja i perioda od nicanja do fiziološke zrelosti se skratilo, dok se trajanje faze vlatanja kod modernih sorti produžilo.

Over the past century in Serbia, grain yield has increased at a rate of 63 kg ha-1 in maize, 46 kg ha-1 in wheat and 46 kg ha-1 in barley. Various studies exploring the agronomical basis of grain yield progress in major cereal crops have indicated that the number of grains per unit area is one of the main traits associated with grain yield improvement. AB  - Understanding the mechanism of dry matter and nitrogen partitioning and its translocation from different plant parts during post-anthesis period on different sowing dates may contribute to further improvement of winter barley productions in the Pannonian Plain. Therefore, a field trial with six two-rowed winter barley cultivars grown on four different sowing dates in two growing seasons was conducted to determine dry matter and nitrogen partitioning in different plant parts, and further role of their translocation in grain yield and nitrogen yield determination. Higher dry matter and nitrogen accumulation on early sowing dates were followed by higher translocation in developing grain. Contribution of pre-anthesis dry matter translocation to grain yield varied from 34.8 to 48.5% among cultivars and 38.44 to 45.0% among different sowing dates. Furthermore, the pre-anthesis reserved N contributed from 53.2% (NS 557) to 66.2% (NS 551) among cultivars, and from 50.7% (early optimal sowing date) to 66.3% (extreme late sowing date) across sowing dates. In order to achieve and maintain high yielding barley production in the Pannonian Plain, barley growers and breeders should focus more on the medium early barley genotypes, such as NS Pinon, with increased dry matter and nitrogen accumulation during pre-anthesis adapted to early sowing.

Njihov značaj za poljoprivrednu proizvodnju naše zemlje potvrđuje i činjenica da su zasejane površine strnih žita bile veće za 3,5% u odnosu na prethodnu godinu. Iako je proizvodnu sezonu 2021/22. pratilo variranje vremenskih činilaca uz topao jesenji period, blagu zimu, deficit padavina u prolećnom delu vegetaćije i povišene temperature u završnim fazama sazrevanja zrna, novosadske sorte strnih žita ponovo su ostvarile visoke prinose zrna, što je uz odličan tehnološki kvalitet dodatno potvrdilo vodeću poziciju sortimenta Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo.

AB  - Strna žita, pre svih pšenica i ječam, biljne su vrste koje se gaje na najvećim površinama u ozimoj setvi u našoj kao i drugim zemljama regiona. Tokom vegetacione sezone 2020/21. strna žita su zauzimala više od 750.000 hektara, što ukazuje na njihov značaj za poljoprivrednu proizvodnju Republike Srbije. Ovu godinu obeležili su povoljni vremenski uslovi tokom jesenjeg perioda, značajne temperaturne varijacije pred početak prolećnog dela vegetacije, velike količine padavina i optimalni temperaturni uslovi tokom faza intenzivnog porasta, cvetanja i nalivanja zrna. Ovakvi vremenski uslovi doprineli su ostvarivanju prinosa strnina koji su prvi put u
Vojvodini bili iznad 6,4 t/ha dok su na nivou cele zemlje iznosili gotovo 6 t/ha. Takođe, i u ovoj proizvodnoj godini novosadske sorte strnih žita ponovo su se istakle na osnovu visokih prinosa kvalitetnog zrna, potvrđujući vodeću ulogu novosadskog Instituta u proizvodnji ovih useva.

AB  - Magnitude and type of gene actions in a specific population are the main criteria for the parents' selection that will develop the best recombinants after hybridization. Information about the genetic control of complex traits is useful for the further development of efficient breeding programs. In order to identify action of genes for grain yield plant-1 and its correlation with main yield components, incomplete diallel crossing was applied. The field trial was conducted at the experimental field of the Agricultural Advisory Service in southeastern Europe, during season 2012-2013. Mean values of F1 generation showed that crosses Apache × Prima had the highest value of grain yield plant-1 and Jackson × Balkan had the lowest. Common type of inheritance for grain yield plant-1 was over dominance. The ANOVA revealed that this trait was controlled by additive and non-additive effects. The best general combiner for grain yield plant-1 was Apache, and two crosses (Dragana × Jackson; Balaton × Nevesinjka) showed significant SCA effects. Components of genetic variance showed that dominant was more important than additive component, and the total number of dominant genes were in excess over the number of recessive genes in all parents. Furthermore, moderately low value of narrow sense heritability (h2=31.96%) was observed for grain yield plant-1. Parent Sana contained maximum dominant genes, whereas parent Jackson had maximum recessive genes. Grain yield plant-1 was significantly correlated with tillers numbers plant-1 at genotypic level (rg=0.494). The results from this study might be helpful for creating new wheat cultivars with highyielding potential.
AB  - Opseg i tip delovanja gena u novim populacijama su glavni kriterijumi za odabir roditelja koji će stvoriti najbolje potomstvo nakon hibridizacije. Informacije o genetičkoj kontroli kompleksnih osobina su korisne za dalje stvaranje efikasnih oplemenjivačkih programa. U cilju identifikacije prirode delovanja gena na prinos zrna po biljci i njegovu korelaciju sa komponentama prinosa upotrebljeno je nepotpuno dijalelno ukrštanje. Ogled je izveden u jugoistočnoj Evropi na oglednom polju Poljoprivredne savetodavne službe tokom sezone 2012-2013. Prema srednjim vrednostima F1 generacije, ukrštanje Apache × Prima je imalo najveći prinos zrna po biljci, a Jackson × Balkan najmanji. Osnovna ocena osobina genotipova tritikale značajnih za proizvodnju slada

AB  - Iako se zanatsko pivo uglavnom pravi od tradicionalnih sastojaka kao što su slad ječma, hmelj, voda i kvasac, ponekad se koriste i netradicionalni sastojci poput drugih žitarica, voća, čokolade, začina i drugog bilja kako bi se dobila spefična prepoznatljivost ukusa. Pored toga, velike pivarske kompanije su fokusirane na smanjenje troškova, zamenjujući ječmeni slad dodacima kao što su kukuruz, pšenica, pirinač ili tritikale. U tom kontekstu, ozimi tritikale je prepoznat kao moguća delimična zamena u proizvodnji sladovine. Međutim, oplemenjivanje tritikalea za proizvodnju slada je komplikovano zbog nedostatka odgovarajuće metodologije koja omogućava brzu i istovremenu ocenu rastvorljivosti proteina i modifikacije ugljenih hidrata. S obzirom da postoje potencijalna tržišta za slad ozimog tritikalea, u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo izvršili smo osnovnu karakterizaciju kolekcije ozimog tritikalea prema osnovnim fizičko-hemijskim osobinama zrna kako bismo identifikovali genotipove koji su pogodni za proizvodnju slada i koji se mogu dalje koristiti u oplemenjivanju. Stoga je u ovom istraživanju korišćeno 25 savremenih sorti i linija tritikalea koje su gajene na oglednom polju Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo, Novi Sad.
AB  - Although craft beer is mostly made from traditional ingredients, such as malted barley, hop, water and yeast, sometimes non-traditional ingredients can be used for distinctiveness, like other cereal grains, fruits, chocolate, spices and other herbs. Moreover, big brewery companies are focused on the cost decrease, replacing barley malt with adjuncts, such as maize, wheat, rice or triticale. In this context, winter triticale has been recognized as a possible partial substitute for malt in wort production. However, triticale breeding for the malt production is difficult due to a lack of appropriate methodology that allows rapid and simultaneous screening of both protein solubilization, as well as carbohydrate modification. Since there is a potential market for winter triticale malt, we carried out basic characterization of winter triticale collection at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops according to main grain physicochemical properties to identify genotypes that are suited for malt production and could be further used for malting triticale breeding. Therefore, 25 modern triticale cultivars and lines were used in this study and grown at the experimental field of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad.

abstract = "Iako se zanatsko pivo uglavnom pravi od tradicionalnih sastojaka kao što su slad ječma, hmelj, voda i kvasac, ponekad se koriste i netradicionalni sastojci poput drugih žitarica, voća, čokolade, začina i drugog bilja kako bi se dobila spefična prepoznatljivost ukusa. Pored toga, velike pivarske kompanije su fokusirane na smanjenje troškova, zamenjujući ječmeni slad dodacima kao što su kukuruz, pšenica, pirinač ili tritikale. U tom kontekstu, ozimi tritikale je prepoznat kao moguća delimična zamena u proizvodnji sladovine. Međutim, oplemenjivanje tritikalea za proizvodnju slada je komplikovano zbog nedostatka odgovarajuće metodologije koja omogućava brzu i istovremenu ocenu rastvorljivosti proteina i modifikacije ugljenih hidrata. S obzirom da postoje potencijalna tržišta za slad ozimog tritikalea, u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo izvršili smo osnovnu karakterizaciju kolekcije ozimog tritikalea prema osnovnim fizičko-hemijskim osobinama zrna kako bismo identifikovali genotipove koji su pogodni za proizvodnju slada i koji se mogu dalje koristiti u oplemenjivanju. Stoga je u ovom istraživanju korišćeno 25 savremenih sorti i linija tritikalea koje su gajene na oglednom polju Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo, Novi Sad., Although craft beer is mostly made from traditional ingredients, such as malted barley, hop, water and yeast, sometimes non-traditional ingredients can be used for distinctiveness, like other cereal grains, fruits, chocolate, spices and other herbs. Moreover, big brewery companies are focused on the cost decrease, replacing barley malt with adjuncts, such as maize, wheat, rice or triticale. In this context, winter triticale has been recognized as a possible partial substitute for malt in wort production. However, triticale breeding for the malt production is difficult due to a lack of appropriate methodology that allows rapid and simultaneous screening of both protein solubilization, as well as carbohydrate modification. Since there is a potential market for winter triticale malt, we carried out basic characterization of winter triticale collection at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops according to main grain physicochemical properties to identify genotypes that are suited for malt production and could be further used for malting triticale breeding. Therefore, 25 modern triticale cultivars and lines were used in this study and grown at the experimental field of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad.",

AB  - The aim of the study was to examine the variation and breeding effects on the stay-green traits, and to identify the relationship between the different growing seasons and grain yield of the Pannonian winter wheat. The experiment was carried out with a historical set of 25 winter wheat cultivars during four growing seasons, in a typical Pannonian location at the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia. The results demonstrated a linear wheat grain yield progress at the rate of 45.7 kg ha−1 yr−1, along with significant variations observed in most stay-green traits due to increased capability of modern wheat cultivars to retain prolonged crop greenness. Furthermore, significant positive correlations between the onset and mid senescence and grain yield in three out of four studied seasons showed that the prolonged senescence led to grain yield increase. Modern wheat cultivars showed an increase of crop greenness at anthesis, onset and mid senescence, and the stay-green interval, as well as a faster senescence rate. Moreover, the stay-green interval was positively correlated with grain yield in each growing season, while the senescence rate was significantly positively correlated with grain yield in the three growing seasons. Furthermore, all examined traits, except the endpoint of senescence (N10), were significantly negatively correlated with anthesis time during all growing seasons. Knowledge about the positive correlations between the prolonged stay-green traits and grain yield could be used for adjusting post-anthesis senescence traits and implemented in winter wheat breeding programs under the climate conditions of the Pannonian Plain.

AB  - Pivarski ječam je jedna od najvažnijih sirovina za proizvodnju slada i piva. U Srbiji postoji samo jedna kompanija koja proizvodi slad od relativno malog broja sorti ječma. U poslednjoj deceniji, broj malih zanatskih pivara je u konstantnom porastu, međutim obuhvata svega oko 2% tržišta, odnosno 10 puta manje od evropskog proseka. Pored velikih i srednjih pivara, u Srbiji je do danas registrovano preko 70 malih zanatskih i veliki broj kućnih pivara. Ove male pivare uvoze skoro sve sirovine neophodne za proizvodnju zanatskog piva, samim tim i slad iz zemalja EU. Osim toga, mali broj gajenih sorti na našim poljima dovodi do smanjenja genetičkog diverziteta. Pored evidentne genetičke erozije, ukupna proizvodnja ječma je ugrožena i trenutnom političkom situacijom u Evropi, koja vodi ka globalnom narušavanju u lancu snabdevanja. Takođe, pojava visokih temeperatura i suše kao rezultat klimatskih promena negativno utiču na proizvodnju ječma ostavljajući nesagledive posledice na razvoj, pre svega malih proizvođača i održivost poljoprivrede u celini.
AB  - Brewing barley is one of the most important raw materials for the production of malt and beer. In Serbia, there is only one company that produces malt from a relatively small number of barley cultivars. In the last decade, the number of small craft breweries in Serbia constantly increases, however, they encompassing only about 2% of the market share, which is 10 times less than the Europe. In addition to large and medium-sized breweries, over 70 small craft breweries and a large number of home breweries have been registered in Serbia to date. These small breweries import almost all raw materials necessary for craft beer production, including malt from EU countries. In addition, cultivation of the relatively small number of cultivars in our fields leads to a decrease in genetic diversity. Apart from the evident genetic erosion, the overall production of barley is threatened by the current political situation in Europe, which leads to a global disruption in the global supply chain. Also, the occurrence of high temperatures and drought as a result of climate change negatively affect the production of barley, provide unexpected consequences on small producers and the sustainability of agriculture in general.

AB  - Constant grain yield improvement is the main objective of breeding programs worldwide. During the past century, grain yield potential of main European cereal crops, maize, barley and wheat has been continuously improved as the result of changes in production technology and development of modern high-yielding cultivars. Information about changes in physiological and quality traits and their contribution to the grain yield improvement are important for further adaptation of cereal breeding strategies. Growing conditions in the Pannonian Plain are negatively influenced by climate changes, limiting high and stable grain yield production of different main cereal crops. Therefore, constant development of new cultivars and hybrids with stable and higher grain yield is one of the most important strategies to mitigate the negative influence of changing climate, securing the higher grain yield production. During the past century, the grain yield of different cereal crops significantly increased at the rate of approximately 50 kg ha-1 in maize, winter wheat and winter barley under conditions of the Pannonian Plain.

However, annual genetic gains in cereals are between 0.5–1.0 percent, showing stagnation in many regions across the world. In or-der to increase grain yield genetic progress, different strategies based on genomics data or physiological traits have to be integrated in breeding activities. Physiological approach in conventional wheat breeding is based on the crosses of parents with desirable complex physiological traits, and progeny selection according to important physiological traits. During the past ten years, different physiological strategies have been applied in regular breeding activities at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia. First of all, small grains gene bank at the Institute has been screened according to different physiological traits, such as NDVI values, infrared temperature and chlorophyll index. Some physiological analysis, such as chlorophyll fluorescence or stomatal conductance, have been identified as labour and time consuming, restricting their application in regular breeding activities at the Institute. Further-more, each growing season several crosses of parents bearing desirable complementary physiological traits are made and progenies with increased NDVI and chlorophyll index are selected. Currently, several new wheat “physiological” lines have been included in preliminary multilocation testing, with high chance to be released as potential new cultivars to the market during the next two or three years. Further integration of physiological breeding with high throughput phenotyping and genomic selection could be promising strategies for additional small grains yield improvement.

AB  - Determination of different quality traits in plant breeding program often requires fast, reliable and non-destructive analytical techniques. During the last two decades, nearinfrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been most often used for measuring of chemical composition: protein, moisture, oil and other parameters 1 . The NIR techniques possess a number of advantages, but also a disadvantage that these devices are relatively large and weight more than 8 kg. The aim of the study was to examine possible using of handheld grain quality analyzer for protein content examination in wheat samples. The protein and water content of 13 wheat cultivars was determined by standard methods of Kjeldahl digestion and drying methods, respectively. Protein content was calculated on dry matter. Furthermore, this quality trait was also determined by handheld GrainSense Analyzer (Oulu, Finland) which weight is 820 grams without batteries 2 . The results of the study showed that the correlation between commonly used method and handheld grain quality analyzer is positive with r = 0.951. From results it can be concluded that handheld analyzer can be successfully used for protein determination in wheat samples.

AB  - U Republici Srbiji i u drugim zemljama našeg regiona ozima pšenica i ječam predstavljaju kulture sa najvećim površinama u ozimoj setvi. U sezoni 2019/20. pšenica, ječam, ovas, raz i tritikale bili su zasejani na preko 750.000 hektara, što i dalje ukazuje na vrednost proizvodnje ozimih strnina. Prethodna sezona ostaće upamćena pre svega po značajnom vodnom deficitu tokom marta i aprila u severoistočnom delu Srbije, ali i po prinosima koji su bili iznad desetogodišnjeg proseka. Takođe, u ovoj godini novosadske sorte strnih žita ponovo su ostvarile visoke prinose zrna, što je uz odličan tehnološki kvalitet dodatno potvrdilo vodeću poziciju sortimenta Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo.
AB  - This paper overviews the production of small grains in Serbia in the year 2019/2020. Wheat, barley, oat, rye and triticale were sown on 750,000 hectares. Even though the growing season faced severe water deficit in March and April in the northeastern Serbia, the yields surpassed the long-term average. NS varieties of small grains showed high grain yields and excellent technological quality.

AB  - Pšenica i ječam su najvažnijih ozimi usevi u Srbiji, kao i u drugim zemlјama našeg regiona. U protekloj sezoni pšenica je bila zasejana na oko 575.500 ha i ostvareni su prinosi od 4,39 t/ha koji su bili na nivou petogodišnjeg proseka (Saopštenje PO16, br. 260, od 25.09.2019). U poslednjih pet godina u Republici Srbiji imali smo širok raspon prosečnih prinosa pšenica od svega 3,9 t/ha (2014. godina) pa čak do 4,9 t/ha (2018. godina). Upravo ova varijabilnost pokazuje da se prinos strnih žita nalazi pod kontrolom velikog broja faktora, poput spolјašnje sredine, sorte, agrotehničkih mera, kao i njihove interakcije (Jaćimović i sar., 2016). Pojedini faktori spolјašnje sredine, kvalitet zemlјišta i tehnologija proizvodnje su predvidlјivi i ne razlikuju se mnogo između različitih sezona. Sa druge strane, temperatura i padavine variraju između sezona i značajno utiču na rast i razviće useva, a samim tim i na formiranje prinosa i kvaliteta strnih žita (Jocković i sar., 2010). Proizvodnja strnih žita u prethodnoj 2018/19. godini pamtiće se po nepovolјnoj jeseni, umerenoj zimi, toplom proleću i čestim padavinama tokom maja. Upravo u takvim ekstremnim sezonama, kao što je 2018/19. godina, do posebnog izražaja dolazi pravilna primena tehnologije gajenja poput redukovane obrade zemlјišta, setve deklarisanog semena adaptabilnih sorti, poštovanja optimalnih rokova setve i pravovremene primene sredstava zaštite. I ove godine kod najvećeg broja otkuplјivača izostao je otkup pšenice na osnovu kvaliteta, što je rezultovalo u nepovolјnoj setvenoj strukturi, odnosno „osnovne“ i sorte van klase nastavlјaju da se seju na više od polovine njiva u našoj zemlјi.

I ove godine kod najvećeg broja otkuplјivača izostao je otkup pšenice na osnovu kvaliteta, što je rezultovalo u nepovolјnoj setvenoj strukturi, odnosno „osnovne“ i sorte van klase nastavlјaju da se seju na više od polovine njiva u našoj zemlјi.",

AB  - Prošle 2018. godine Institut za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo iz Novog Sada proslavio je 80
godina postojanja. U tom periodu osnovicu naučnoistraživačke delatnosti činio je oplemenjivački rad, koji je za cilj imao stvaranje novih sorti i hibrida. Od osnivanja Instituta i početka rada na strnim žitima, sve do današnjih dana, jedno od važnijih opredeljenja bio je i ostao rad na oplemenjivanju i agrotehnici strnih žita, kao i proizvodnja svih kategorija semena.

AB  - Do kraja 2017. Ministarstvo poljoprivrede, Šumarstva i vodoprivrede Republike Srbije
registrovalo je ukupno 466 sorti strnih žita, stvorenih u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo u Novom Sadu. Od tog broja, 282 su sorte ozime pšenice, 31 sorta jare pšenice, 4 sorte ozime durum pšenice, 2 jare durum pšenice, 65 sorti ozimog ječma, 39 sorti jarog ječma, 18 sorti ozimog tritikalea, 10 sorti ozimog ovsa, 10 sorti jarog ovsa i 5 sorti ozime raži. Ostvareni rezultati vredni su pažnje i van granica naše zemlje. U 17 zemalja Evrope, Male Azije i Severne Amerike registrovano je 69 sorti strnih žita. Neke od novosadskih sorti danas daju i davale su u bližoj i daljoj prošlosti značajan doprinos unapređenju proizvodnje pšenice u Republici Srbiji, kao i u više zemalja jugoistočne (Rumunija, Bugarska, Makedonija, BiH) i srednje (Mađarska, Češka, Slovačka, Slovenija) Evrope.
