AB - Plant genetic resources are a valuable, but largely unexplored pool of
potentialy useful traits that could be useful for crop improvement for more
resilience to fluctuating climates. Traditional varieties and landraces are, in
general, well adapted to local environments, to but usually mature late and have
low yield, one of the most valued trait among both breeders and farmers. The
aim of this study was to evalute 30 local Serbian landraces and obsolete
varieties for yield potential, earliness (as flowering time), and ability to
remobilize nutitrients to the grain, and to determine their correlations with
NDVI, flag leaf area and chlorophyll content. A two-year field trial with 5 m2
plots in three replications was performed at the experimental station at Rimski
Šančevi, Novi Sad, Serbia. The yield, dry matter remobilisation efficiency
(DMRE) and contribution (DMRC) were in positive correlations with NDVI,
flag leaf area and chlorophyll content. Flowering time was negetively
correlated to all other traits. The genotypes were separated as low (9 t/ha).
Despite the negative correlation between the flowering time and other traits, a
several genotypes (landrace L285, varieties Novosadska crvenka, Hibrid 0.13
and Partizanka) showed earliness (130-133 days), high yields (9.11-9.88 t/ha),
and high or medium DMRE (0.36-0.44) and DMRC (0.55-0.62) and harvest
indices (0.55-0.60). Those varieties also had medium or, in case of L285, low
flag leaf areas. The results indicated that this is a interesting potential breeding
material being worthwhile for further investigations.

Yield, dry matter remobilization efficiency, and dry matter remobilization contribution exhibited positive correlations with normalized difference vegetation index, flag leaf area, and chlorophyll content, while flowering time showed negative correlations with all other traits. Nevertheless, one landrace and three traditional varieties out of 30 evaluated germplasm displayed early flowering, high yield, and medium to high nutrient remobilization traits. Our results suggest that these genotypes represent interesting potential breeding materials warranting further investigation.

AB - The goal of this research is to test breeding material of different geographical origin, and material that is adapted to different agro-climatic regions. This research examines how different wheat genotypes behave in the climatic conditions of the Pannonian Plain, where environmental stress occur more and more frequently. Fifteen divergent wheat genotypes were evaluated for grain yield, heading time and yield components (spike length, grain weight per spike and plant height) across seasons 2017/2018, 2018/2019 and 2019/2020. By applying the ANOVA model, significant differences between tested traits were recorded among the analyzed genotypes. Among the genotypes there was a variability that ranged widely for all tested traits. The coefficient of variation ranged from 5.48% for plant height to 41.03% for grain weight per spike. Correlation analysis showed strong positive relationships between grain yield and grain weight per spike (r = 0.87), as well as between plant height and heading time (r = 0.65). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was also applied in order to determine the differences between wheat genotypes. This yield marker study, which was carried out in the Western Balkans, could be very valuable in providing breeders with the information they need to evaluate their breeding programs.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the dynamics of dry matter accumulation in the grains of maize hybrids of different maturity groups and their yield in the provided agroecological conditions. The trial was organised as a RCB design, with 12 hybrids in four replications, and was conducted at the Rimski Šančevi experimental field of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (IFVCNS). The progression of dry matter accumulation in the grain was monitored in the period from silking to physiological maturity, at three-day intervals, for each hybrid. Collected data were analyzed in the SegReg program. The dry matter accumulation followed a linear trend until the breaking point (linear plateu regression), from which its content remained stable. The earliest hybrid (NS-1) achieved the maximum dry matter content (0.255g) at 39 days after silking (DAS), while the latest hybrid (NS-12) reached its maximum dry matter content (0.249g) at 42 DAS.

AB - This research was conducted on Rimski Šančevi at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops,
Novi Sad, Serbia. Fifteen divergent wheat genotypes different in their morphological and
physiological characteristics as well as to originate from different parts of the world were
selected. For wheat breeding to be successful it is necessary to know the interrelationship of a
large number of components which together affect the yield height and quality. Grain yield and
its components (spike length, plant height, grain weight per spike, and heading time) were
analyzed. For the data obtained from the experiment, the following parameters were calculated:
mean, minimum, maximum value, coefficient of variation and standard deviation. Also, analysis
of variance (ANOVA), correlation coefficient and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were
calculated. By applying the ANOVA model, it was found that among analyzed genotypes
significant differences between tested traits were recorded. The coefficient of variation ranged
from 5.02% to 30.85%. Correlation analysis showed that a strong positive relationship occurred
between grain yield and grain mass per spike (r = 0.815), as well as between plant height and
heading time (r = 0.665). A negative correlation occurred between heading time and yield (r = -
0.650) and grain weight per spike and heading time (r = - 0.549). Genotypes Apache, Pobeda and
Acciaio achieved the highest results which were confirmed by Principal Component Analysis.
By analyzing the obtained final results, it was concluded that between genotypes there was a
variability that ranged widely for all tested traits.

AB - In early stages of maize breeding program, large number of new genotypes is grown in a set of field trial locations. The best ones are identified to move to the next stage so that in the final stages of breeding program small number of superior hybrids is grown in pre-registration and post-registration field trials across set of locations. Field trials were conducted in a partially replicated design, each genotype with two replications per location at six locations in 2020. The experiments included 150 hybrids obtained by crossing different S2 progenies with an elite inbred tester. These field trials were conducted to identify the best performing genotypes using appropriate statistical model. The factor analytic (FA) model accommodates the heterogeneity of genetic variance for locations and heterogeneity of genetic covariance between pairs of locations.

AB - The purpose of this research is to examine the variability in yields and yield components of wheat cultivars in Northern Serbia, examine and visualize their groupings and relationships, and determine the correlations between their traits using principal components analysis (PCA). A total of fifteen wheat genotypes (Triticum aestivum L.), developed in 10 different countries over a period exceeding 70 years, were analyzed during the growing seasons of 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 at Rimski šančevi, the experimental station of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. A phenotypic analysis was performed for the following wheat traits: spike weight, number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, thousand grain weight, and grain yield. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, an analysis of variance, a correlation analysis for interactions between the traits considered, and PCA. The results obtained indicate significant differences between the genotypes according to all the traits examined. The correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations between the yields produced and nearly all yield components. The PCA confirmed the relationship between the traits examined, grouped the genotypes according to their performance, and highlighted the genotypes eligible for future breeding and research

The PCA confirmed the relationship between the traits examined, grouped the genotypes according to their performance, and highlighted the genotypes eligible for future breeding and research",

AB - Dark red corn is rich in anthocyanins, which belong to phenolic compounds, one of the largest families of antioxidants. Due to numerous, beneficial biological activities of these compounds, this crop is rising in popularity. Unfortunately, the use of dark red corn in the temperate zone is limited, so the breeding activities in this sense are negligible. To maximize profitability and meet technological and growing demands, both biochemical and agronomic performances of such materials have to be considered. A preliminary study was conducted to test the variability of total phenolic compounds and some agronomic traits in NS01RB, a broad based population of dark red corn. 352 full sibs were tested in an incomplete block design with replicates in sets. Data were collected for grain yield, grain moisture, ASI, stay green, stalk lodging, ear rotting and grain color. Significant genetic variability existed among full sibs for all studied traits. A subset of 132 full sibs that showed the highest level of tolerance to ear rotting was selected for biochemical analysis. Mean values for the total phenolic compound ranged from 0.66 to 4.83 mg/g. Basic genetic parameters, relationships and mean values of the examined traits showed that the studied material represents a valuable source of phenolic compounds and could be used in a breeding program.

AB - In early stages of maize breeding program, large number of new genotypes are grown in a set of field trial locations. The best ones are identified to move to the next stage so that in the final stages of breeding program small number of superior hybrids are grown in a pre-registration and post-registration field trials across set of locations.
