AB - To examine the effect of cyanobacteria on the properties of different soil types of the Vojvodina Province soil samples were inoculated with a mixture of two cyanobacteria cultures. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse. It included two treatments, With and Without cyanobacteria. Each experiment unit (soil genetic horizon of layer) was replicated four times. It may be concluded on the basic of the obtained results that the cyanobacteria did not have a pronounced effect on the water-physical and basic chemical properties of the soils. Increases in the content of mineral nitrogen in all soil horizon and layers were observed. Soil inoculation with cyanobacteria decreased the level of electric conductivity in saturated water extract (Amo,p subhorizon in chernozem and Aoh,na/E horizon) and the content of Na in saturated water extract (Aoh,na/E horizon in solenetz).

AB - The first global estimate of the fertility status and levels of hazardous and harmful substances in the soils of Vojvodina was made in 1992-1993. A total of 1,600 samples were analyzed, each representing an area of 1,000 ha. The study showed Vojvodina to be a very suitable area for the production of safe foods. However, a series of unfavorable circumstances that befell our country in the last 10 years (absent or inadequate fertilizer and pesticide use, 1999 spillage of hazardous and harmful substances in Pančevo and Novi Sad and Novi Sad oil refinery fires) made it necessary to re-test all 1,600 of these samples throughout Vojvodina. The Executive Council of the Province of Vojvodina funded the analysis of 50 soil samples and 10 irrigation water samples from the province. This repeated study involved all the parameters included in the 1992-1993 one, but devastation caused by the 1999 NATO bombardment made it imperative to put special emphasis on testing for the presence in the soil of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as by-products of combustion of oil and oil derivatives. Based on the results of analyses carried out thus far to obtain an initial overall picture of the fertility status and possible soil degradation of the soils of Vojvodina resulting from inadequate fertilizer use and potential soil damage by organic pollutants (pesticides and by-products of burning oil and oil derivatives), we can conclude that the province of Vojvodina is a suitable area for the production of high-value, high-quality safe food by domestic and EU standards.

AB - With the aim to evaluate the general condition and possible degradation of soil in the Vojvodina Province, soil samples were collected from 1,600 locations. The main chemical properties of the soil, levels of harmful and hazardous substances, the abundance and enzymatic activity of microorganisms, and pesticide residues and the products of their degradation were studied. The health condition of irrigated soils was studied in particular, since salinity and alkalization occur frequently in irrigated fields. It can be concluded from the results that the soils of the Vojvodina Province are still suitable for the production of quality and safe food.

AB - Microorganisms are widely spread around nature in the soil, water and air as well as on plants and animals and are a crucial link in the chain of matter circulation on the planet. They are the most important component of the biological soil phase and an important indicator of soil fertility and soil degradation. Soil microbiological processes are dependant on the organic matter content, while the fertility of a given soil type is connected with the activity of its microflora. Knowing the metabolism of a microorganism enables the direction of microbiological processes by application of useful microorganisms to maintain and enhance soil biological activity, i.e. soil biogenicity. An increase of acreage in legumes requires that a wider use of microbiological fertilizers to maintain and increase soil fertility be considered. Results of legume nitrogen fixation suggest that fixed nitrogen makes a large annual contribution to yield, which justifies the use of highly effective strains in microbiological fertilizers, enables the replacement of nitrogen from mineral fertilizer with biological nitrogen and has economic and environmental effects as well. The incorporation of microorganisms causes no soil pollution, reduces the use of mineral nitrogen fertilizer, contributes to the production of environmentally safe food improves the soil structure, increases the organic matter content and positively affects physical soil properties.

AB - Modern systems of vegetable production combine yield stability and quality with effective protection of the environment. Since microorganisms are the biological component of soil, their population size biodiversity reflects the level of biological activity of soil, i.e., they may serve as useful indicators for soil characterization. Dominance of certain groups of microorganisms affects the processes of soil synthesis and decomposition and it determines the quality of soil and its applicability for the production of safe food. Analyses conducted as several sites in the location of Bačko Gradište (BAG Food Processing Company) have shown that the microbiological activity of the soils was high. The total numbers of bacteria and ammonifiers ranged up to x108, of Azotobacter up to x103, free N-fixing bacteria up to x106, of fungi up to x104, and of actinomycetes up to x1085. To achieve an optimum level of vegetable production, simultaneously enforcing the values of the natural ecosystem, it is necessary to monitor microorganism status in the soil and work on the development of effective microbial strains.
